On supported models, the recording software is built into the television while programs are usually stored on a separately connected USB hard disk. Whether it works depends on the exact model number, country or sales region, tuner design, input source, broadcaster permissions, and USB-drive requirements. Check the television’s local support page or manual before buying storage or assuming an app can add recording.
What “built-in DVR” means on a Smart TV
Television makers use several names for a recording feature: DVR, PVR, USB HDD recording, digital recording, or timeshift. These names can be misleading if you expect an internal hard disk. In most supported designs, the TV contains the recording function in its firmware, but the storage is an external USB hard disk.

Samsung documentation calls the feature PVR and describes recording current or future programs to USB storage. Sony’s Help Guide gives the operational instruction: “Connect and register a USB HDD device to your TV to record digital broadcasts.” That wording describes a TV with compatible software and tuner hardware, not every television running a Smart TV operating system.
A USB socket alone proves nothing. A port may be intended for media playback, software updates, keyboards, or power. Recording requires a compatible tuner, firmware support, and a drive that meets the manufacturer’s rules.

Why the exact model and region matter
Recording support is selected model by model and can change between countries. Two televisions with nearly identical names may have different tuners, firmware, licensing, or disabled recording functions in different markets. Always use the complete model code and the country where the set was sold when checking support.
Sony’s guidance says USB HDD recording is available only on some models and in limited regions. Its Australian regional information also states that Google TV and Android TV models released from 2018 onward are not compatible with USB HDD recording in the Asia-Pacific region. That regional qualification cannot be applied to every country, so a result from another market is not proof for your television.
| What to verify | Why it changes the answer |
|---|---|
| Complete model code | Recording may exist on one model variant but not another with a similar retail name. |
| Country or sales region | Manufacturers enable different features and publish different compatibility lists. |
| TV software and release year | An operating-system family does not guarantee that the recording function is present. |
| Tuner configuration | Single- and twin-tuner sets have different recording and viewing capabilities. |
| Manual terminology | Search for PVR, DVR, USB HDD recording, recording device setup, or timeshift. |
Which signals a TV can record
The TV generally must receive the program through its own built-in tuner. Samsung’s PVR instructions identify cable, satellite, or terrestrial broadcasts received by the television tuner as the supported sources for that feature. An HDMI-connected set-top box is different: the box has the tuner, while the television receives an already decoded video signal. The TV normally cannot turn that HDMI feed into a tuner recording.

Check the manual for the exact input rules because implementations differ. An antenna connected to the TV’s terrestrial tuner may qualify, while an antenna connected to an external receiver and then passed over HDMI may not. The same distinction can apply to cable or satellite services.
Conditional-access systems add another restriction. Samsung notes that a broadcaster can decide whether a program may be recorded and that paid channels may require a CI+ module. Sony’s guidance also lists encrypted or unauthorized broadcasts among recording limitations. A channel that displays normally is therefore not automatically recordable.
Can you watch one channel while recording another?
That depends on the number and type of tuners. Sony says certain 4K models with a twin tuner can record one channel while you watch another. A single-tuner television commonly has to remain on the channel being recorded, although the exact behavior is model-specific.

- USB Flash Drive Compatible with Fire TV, Roku TV, Replacement for Samsung Toshiba TV, USB 2.0 64GB
Do not infer tuner count from the number of USB ports, HDMI inputs, or the television’s processor. Look for “twin tuner,” “dual tuner,” or an explicit statement about watching another channel during recording in the manual. Also check whether the second tuner supports the same broadcast standard and conditional-access system as the first; a specification that simply says “two tuners” may not describe every possible combination.
USB drive setup, formatting, and portability
Supported televisions normally require you to register or format a USB hard disk before recording. Sony’s documented procedure uses a drive dedicated to recording and warns that registration erases existing data. Back up photographs, documents, and other files before connecting the disk for setup.
Registration can also bind recordings to the television. Sony says recordings made on a registered drive can be played only by that TV. If the television is replaced, repaired, or factory-reset, the recordings may not remain usable. Samsung and other manufacturers can impose different formatting, capacity, speed, or filesystem rules, so treat the manual for your model as authoritative.

Use a compatible external USB hard drive for TV recording rather than assuming any flash drive or portable disk will work. Manufacturers can specify a minimum sustained speed, a maximum or minimum capacity, a particular USB port, or a requirement for external power. The correct product description is “compatible external USB hard drive for TV recording”; no universal capacity or drive model is guaranteed across brands and regions.
How to check whether your TV supports DVR recording
- Find the full identity of the set. Read the model code from the rear label, system information screen, receipt, or original packaging. Record the country or market of sale as well.
- Open the local manufacturer support page or manual. Search the document for “PVR,” “DVR,” “USB HDD recording,” “recording device setup,” and “timeshift.” A generic Smart TV specification page is not enough.
- Confirm the source path. Verify that the feature records the antenna, cable, or satellite signal arriving at the TV’s own tuner. If the program comes from an external receiver over HDMI, assume it is unsupported unless the manual explicitly says otherwise.
- Check drive requirements. Note the approved USB port, drive type, capacity range, speed, power arrangement, and formatting process. Determine whether setup will erase the disk.
- Check tuner behavior. Look for instructions on recording one channel while watching another, recording two channels, and using timeshift. These functions require specific tuner configurations.
- Read the portability warning. Find out whether recordings are encrypted, restricted to the original TV, or playable on another device. Plan a backup of the drive’s non-recording data before registration.
- Test a permitted free broadcast. After setup, make a short recording from a channel that the broadcaster allows you to record. Confirm playback before scheduling an important program.
Scheduling, timeshift, and everyday operation
On models that support PVR, the guide or recording menu may offer an immediate recording command and a schedule for future broadcasts. The exact labels and guide data vary by model and region. Verify that the clock, time zone, and daylight-saving setting are correct before relying on a timer.

It pauses or rewinds a live broadcast, usually by writing temporary data to the USB drive. A television can support timeshift without offering a full program library, or it may impose separate restrictions on how long paused content is retained.

Scheduled recordings can fail when the TV is unplugged, the drive is disconnected, the channel changes its broadcast schedule, or the broadcaster blocks recording. Leave the drive connected to the designated port and follow the manual’s standby instructions. Do not remove the disk while recording or while the TV is finalizing a file.

The TV sees the drive but offers no recording option
- Confirm that the model and region support USB recording; media playback support is not equivalent.
- Check that the broadcast is entering through the internal tuner rather than HDMI.
- Install the manufacturer-approved software update if the manual requires it, then recheck the recording menu.
- Use the USB port identified for HDD recording, not merely the first port you find.
Registration fails or the TV says the disk is incompatible
- Back up the disk and allow the TV to format it as instructed.
- Check capacity, speed, filesystem, and external-power requirements in the model manual.
- Disconnect hubs and extension cables during setup; connect the drive directly when the instructions require it.
- Try a drive that meets the stated specifications instead of assuming a higher-capacity disk is automatically better.
A scheduled recording is missing
- Check whether the channel or program was protected by broadcaster or conditional-access rules.
- Verify the TV’s clock, guide data, standby state, and available disk space.
- Confirm that another timer or simultaneous recording did not exceed the TV’s tuner capacity.
- Make sure the drive remained connected and was not registered to, or reformatted by, another television.
The recording will not play on a computer or another TV
That can be intentional. TV recording systems often encrypt files or bind them to the registering set. Sony explicitly documents playback only on the TV that registered the drive for its supported models. Treat recordings as device-specific unless your own manual states otherwise.
Built-in TV recording versus a separate DVR
A supported TV feature can be convenient because it uses the television’s existing tuner and remote control. A separate DVR may offer different tuner counts, storage expansion, guide services, or portability, but its compatibility depends on the signal path and service provider. Compare the options against the same criteria rather than assuming one is universally superior.
| Decision factor | TV-based USB recording | Separate DVR |
|---|---|---|
| Source compatibility | Usually limited to broadcasts received by the TV’s built-in tuner. | Depends on the DVR’s tuner inputs and whether it accepts antenna, cable, satellite, or another source. |
| Simultaneous channels | Determined by the television’s tuner count; twin-tuner models may record one channel while showing another. | Determined by the DVR’s tuner design and service configuration. |
| Storage | Requires a compatible USB HDD and may erase or dedicate it during registration. | Uses the DVR’s internal or approved external storage rules. |
| Portability | Recordings may be encrypted and playable only on the registering TV. | Portability depends on the DVR’s export and protection rules. |
| Regional availability | Feature support can change by TV model and market. | Hardware and service availability can also vary by country and provider. |
If your television fails the model-support check, an external recording system is a separate compatibility decision, not a software switch. You must verify that system’s tuner inputs and rights restrictions for your particular service.
Do apps add DVR recording to an unsupported TV?
An app can organize content or provide internet video, but it cannot normally create a missing broadcast tuner, firmware-level USB recording function, or permission to capture protected channels. For an antenna signal, the practical question is whether the television’s own tuner and operating software support recording. If the manufacturer’s manual does not document that path, do not assume an app running on the Smart TV will provide it.
Checklist before buying a recording drive
- Write down the exact TV model and sales region.
- Confirm documented PVR or USB HDD recording support.
- Verify that your real source is connected to the TV tuner.
- Check tuner count and whether you need to watch another channel during a recording.
- Read USB speed, capacity, power, and port requirements.
- Back up the disk because registration may erase it.
- Accept that recordings may be locked to one TV.
- Test a short recording from an unrestricted channel before setting important timers.
Bottom line
Smart TVs do not universally have built-in DVRs. Some models include software for recording digital tuner broadcasts, but the usual arrangement is a separately connected USB hard drive that the TV formats and may lock to itself. Model number, region, source connection, tuner count, broadcaster permissions, and drive specifications all determine what will work. Verify those points in the local manual before purchasing storage or relying on an app.
