Smart TV Buying Guide: The Privacy Settings and Controls That Matter Most (2026)

Turn off automatic content recognition (ACR) first, then review ad-personalization and voice permissions. ACR can identify programs watched through the television and, on some platforms, devices connected by HDMI. It is usually the highest-impact viewing-privacy setting. A separate streaming player changes which device collects data, but it does not remove the need to configure privacy controls.

What a smart TV can collect

A connected television can process more than the streaming account you use. Depending on the platform, its software may record viewing-related events, recognize programs from built-in apps or external inputs, personalize advertising, and send voice requests to a manufacturer or assistant provider. The names and defaults differ by model, country, firmware version, and the agreements shown during setup.

Automatic content recognition (ACR) is the setting that deserves the closest attention. ACR systems create a signature from on-screen activity and match it with a content database. That can include broadcast television, built-in streaming apps, game consoles, disc players, and other HDMI sources. The resulting information may support recommendations, audience measurement, or advertising-related services.

ACR is not the same as an account’s viewing history. It can operate at the television platform level, so it may see activity from an app or device even when that app has its own privacy policy. Turning off an individual app’s history therefore does not necessarily disable the television’s viewing collection.

ACR and viewing-information controls

Samsung: Viewing Information Services

Samsung support describes a feature called Viewing Information Services. Samsung says a Smart TV may use ACR technology to enhance the viewing experience, and that an opted-in service generates signatures from viewing activity. Those signatures can be used for recommendations, measurement, or advertising-related purposes under the applicable notice.

During setup and in the TV’s privacy menus, look specifically for Viewing Information Services or an equivalent viewing-information choice. Read whether the setting covers external inputs as well as Samsung’s own apps. If you do not want ACR, decline or disable that service. Do not assume that declining personalized advertising also stops viewing-information collection; Samsung documents those as separate categories.

Roku TV: Smart TV Experience

On Roku televisions, the documented path is Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. With Smart TV Experience enabled, Roku says it collects information about “what you watch and when you watch” through the TV and connected devices. To stop the television from using input information for that experience, disable Use info from TV inputs.

This switch addresses viewing information from television inputs. Roku provides separate advertising controls, so review those after changing Smart TV Experience. A Roku account and individual streaming apps may also retain their own activity records, governed by their respective notices.

LG: agreements and ACR choices vary by market

LG’s current privacy statements describe ACR-related choices and service agreements but do not promise one universal menu path for every model and country. The labels and available switches can change with firmware, model year, and regional terms. During setup, examine optional agreements for viewing-information or recommendation services, and later search the privacy settings for ACR, viewing information, or content-recognition language.

LG states that, depending on the market, essential functions such as streaming apps, live TV, HDMI devices, and software updates can remain available when optional data-driven services are declined. The exact features depend on the agreement presented on your television.

Why ad personalization is a separate decision

Disabling interest-based or personalized advertising does not necessarily stop the platform from collecting viewing information. It may only prevent collected information from being used to tailor advertisements to you. A platform can still show contextual or non-personalized ads, and previously collected data may not be erased automatically.

Review both categories:

  • Viewing-information or ACR control: determines whether the television platform may recognize and report what is displayed.
  • Advertising or interest-based control: determines whether data may be used to personalize advertising or related measurement.

Samsung documents separate viewing-information and advertising choices. Roku likewise documents Smart TV Experience separately from advertising controls. Read the confirmation text for each switch; the notice should explain whether the change is prospective, whether earlier records are retained, and whether the setting applies to external inputs.

Voice assistants, microphones, and wake words

Voice privacy has two parts: when the microphone is allowed to activate and where the resulting request is processed. A television can expose a hardware mute switch, a remote-control microphone button, a wake word, or a combination of these. The presence of a microphone does not by itself prove that every conversation is uploaded, but you should verify the activation behavior and recording policy for the exact model.

LG voice controls

LG says speech-to-text begins after a supported wake word or after you press a voice or AI button. That means the documented activation event is distinct from ordinary background audio. LG’s terms still govern how the recognized speech and related information are handled, so read the voice-service agreement before enabling it.

Google Assistant on supported non-Android LG TVs

Google says Google and the device manufacturer need your permission to share information for Google Assistant and the manufacturer’s voice services to work. On supported non-Android LG televisions, speech-to-text is sent to the manufacturer under the applicable terms. If you decline that information-sharing permission, the associated assistant features may not work, while other television functions can remain available.

Roku voice and microphone settings

Roku exposes microphone permissions under Settings > Privacy > Voice. Check whether voice features are enabled, which remote or television microphones are covered, and whether a physical mute control is available on your model. A microphone permission setting is separate from ACR and advertising settings.

FTC advice for any brand

The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to check how recordings are handled and to use a physical switch or button when available. Its practical recommendation is to find the television’s tracking settings and change them to match your privacy preferences. Keep the television software and companion mobile apps current, because privacy controls and security fixes can depend on updated versions.

Setup checklist for a new television

  1. Pause at the agreement screen. Read optional privacy, recommendation, advertising, voice, and service agreements instead of accepting every option automatically. Note which features require consent and which are essential.
  2. Record the model and software version. Photograph the model number and the privacy screens. Menus can change after an update, and this record helps you find the correct support document later.
  3. Disable ACR or viewing-information collection. On Roku TV, use Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience and turn off Use info from TV inputs. On Samsung, review Viewing Information Services. On LG, inspect the current agreements and privacy menu for ACR or viewing-information choices.
  4. Review advertising controls separately. Turn off interest-based or personalized advertising if you do not want that use. Check whether the notice says anything about existing data or non-personalized ads.
  5. Configure voice deliberately. Decide whether you need a wake word, a voice button, or an assistant at all. Deny optional information-sharing permissions when voice features are unnecessary, and engage a physical microphone switch or mute button where provided.
  6. Remove unused applications. Uninstall apps you do not use and review permissions for those you keep. Each app may have its own account, analytics, and advertising choices.
  7. Update the television and phone apps. Install current firmware and current companion-app versions. Updates can add or relocate controls and address security defects.
  8. Choose a network boundary. If your router supports it, place the television on a guest or IoT network. This limits direct access between the TV and other home devices, although it does not disable the TV platform’s own data collection.
  9. Verify after setup. Reopen privacy menus after a major firmware update or factory reset. A reset can return optional services to their setup state.

Platform differences at a glance

Platform or implementation Viewing-information control Advertising control Voice and microphone controls Optional agreements and core use
Samsung Smart TV Viewing Information Services; Samsung says opted-in ACR creates signatures from viewing activity. Documented separately from viewing-information choices. Review the model’s voice and recording settings; FTC guidance recommends checking handling and using a physical mute control where available. Feature availability depends on the agreements and market shown during setup.
Roku TV Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience; disable Use info from TV inputs to stop use of TV-input information for that experience. Documented separately from Smart TV Experience. Settings > Privacy > Voice provides microphone permissions. Roku account and app terms remain separate from TV-level controls.
LG Smart TV ACR-related choices are described in current statements; menu labels and availability vary by model, firmware, and market. Review optional data-driven and advertising terms separately where presented. Speech-to-text starts after a supported wake word or voice/AI button activation. LG says essential functions such as streaming apps, live TV, HDMI devices, and updates may remain available without optional data-driven services, depending on market.
Google Assistant on supported non-Android LG TVs Not a replacement for the TV’s ACR control; configure the television’s viewing-information setting separately. Assistant permissions do not by themselves determine TV advertising settings. Google and the manufacturer require permission to share information; speech-to-text is sent to the manufacturer under applicable terms. Declining permission can disable Assistant and related voice services while leaving other TV functions available.

Can you use a smart TV without accepting every agreement?

Often, yes, but the result depends on the model and country. Optional data-driven services may include personalized recommendations, ACR-based measurement, advertising features, or voice assistants. LG explicitly says that, in some markets, streaming apps, live TV, HDMI devices, and updates can continue without those optional services.

Do not treat an “essential” label as a universal legal category. One model may require an account for app downloads while another allows limited use without one. Read the screen presented on your television and test the functions you actually need: antenna or cable input, HDMI playback, app sign-in, software updates, and casting from a phone.

Should you use a separate streaming player?

A separate player can simplify the television’s role: leave the display offline and connect the player only when you need streaming. This reduces the number of software services running on the TV, but it changes the architecture rather than eliminating tracking.

A Roku streaming player has its own Smart TV Experience, advertising, account, and microphone settings. Configure those controls on the player just as you would on a Roku television. The player can still observe the content it delivers, and the streaming applications can still maintain their own histories.

Using a separate player is most useful when you want to keep the display disconnected, replace streaming hardware without replacing the panel, or maintain one clearly defined device for app updates. It is not a guarantee of anonymity, and it does not erase data already collected by accounts or services.

Network and account practices that complement TV settings

Use a guest or IoT network

A separate network segment can reduce the TV’s ability to reach computers, cameras, storage, and other household devices. This is a router design choice, not a universal television setting. Confirm that the network still permits the services you need, such as casting or local media playback; isolation can intentionally block those connections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Minimize account linking

Sign in only to services you use. Avoid linking a television account to unrelated household profiles when a separate profile is available. Account-level history and recommendations can persist even after a TV-level ACR switch is disabled.

Keep permissions narrow

Review app access to microphones, contacts, location, and local-network devices. Deny permissions that are not needed for the app’s function, and remove apps that no longer receive updates or serve a current purpose.

Troubleshooting privacy settings

The ACR switch is missing

Check that you are in the television’s system privacy menu rather than an individual app. Search the support documentation using the exact model number and country. Firmware updates can rename a control, and some regions present the choice only during initial setup.

The setting returned after a reset

A factory reset clears configuration and can restore setup prompts. Repeat the privacy review before reconnecting accounts or HDMI devices, then confirm the setting after the first software update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recommendations continue after disabling ACR

ACR is only one source of recommendations. An app account, search history, viewing profile, or voice assistant may still personalize results. Review the app’s own privacy controls and account history, and distinguish continued recommendations from proof that TV-input ACR remains active.

Voice commands stopped working

Check the microphone permission, physical mute switch, remote batteries, network connection, and assistant information-sharing consent. Disabling a microphone or declining manufacturer-to-assistant sharing intentionally prevents the associated voice feature from operating.

Streaming apps disappeared after declining an agreement

Read the agreement’s feature list and test whether the issue affects app installation, account sign-in, or only recommendations. Some markets preserve core streaming and HDMI functions without optional data services, while others may impose different requirements.

How to choose a privacy-conscious model

  1. Inspect the setup screens before purchase. Ask the retailer to display the privacy and service-agreement pages or download the current manual for the exact model and region.
  2. Prefer clear, separate controls. The best fit is the model that distinguishes viewing information, ad personalization, microphone access, and optional agreements instead of combining them in one unavoidable consent.
  3. Check external-input coverage. If you use a console, cable box, or disc player, verify whether the ACR notice includes HDMI and other connected sources.
  4. Confirm voice behavior. Look for a physical mute control, a documented wake-word or button trigger, and a clear explanation of where speech-to-text is sent.
  5. Verify regional support. Privacy menus, account requirements, and essential-function exceptions can differ by country and firmware.
  6. Plan for updates. Choose a platform whose support pages document current controls and keep a record of your settings so you can recheck them after updates.

The practical buying rule is simple: select the platform whose current model gives you understandable, independent switches for ACR or viewing information, advertising personalization, voice access, and optional services. If the television does not provide the control you need, keeping the display offline and using a separately configured streaming player is a workable alternative.
