SSDP commonly uses UDP port 1900 and the IPv4 multicast group 239.255.255.250. If a switch or wireless network is flooding that traffic, containing it can stop buffering. It is not a universal fix: weak Wi-Fi, competing devices, insufficient throughput and ISP congestion can produce the same symptom. Start with a controlled test, and prefer IGMP snooping over an indiscriminate block whenever possible.
What multicast has to do with a buffering TV
Multicast sends one packet to a group of devices instead of one specific recipient. Home-network discovery protocols use it so devices can find one another without knowing each other’s addresses. Microsoft describes SSDP as the protocol used to detect Universal Plug and Play devices; its examples use UDP port 1900 and 239.255.255.250.

That traffic is normally small compared with a video stream. The problem occurs when network equipment handles it inefficiently. A switch without correctly functioning IGMP snooping may flood multicast frames out of many ports, including ports whose devices never requested them. Wireless equipment may transmit multicast at a conservative rate, consuming airtime for every client. RFC 9119 notes that multicast and broadcast traffic is generally sent at the slowest rate supported by connected devices.

When that overhead competes with a TV’s unicast video stream, the TV can pause even though an internet speed test looks fast. There is no authoritative percentage showing how often multicast is the cause of smart-TV buffering, so treat this as a diagnostic hypothesis rather than a guaranteed cure.

SSDP multicast is not the same as IPTV multicast
| Traffic | Typical purpose | Risk of blocking |
|---|---|---|
| UPnP/SSDP multicast | Device discovery and announcements on the local network; commonly UDP 1900 to 239.255.255.250 | Discovery, casting, UPnP and DLNA features may stop working |
| Provider IPTV multicast | May carry live television video from an IPTV service | Channels or the entire IPTV service can fail; do not block casually |
Google Cast Help specifically says UPnP, also called multicast in this context, is required to discover Cast-enabled devices on the same Wi-Fi network. A rule that removes all multicast can therefore fix one symptom while breaking casting or smart-home controls.
Check ordinary causes before changing a rule
Use the symptom pattern to decide whether multicast is plausible.

| Observation | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Only one TV or one app buffers | Check that TV’s Wi-Fi signal, app, firmware and local network path first. |
| Every stream on several devices buffers | Look for congestion, a failing access point, switch flooding or an ISP problem. |
| Ethernet fixes the problem | Radio conditions or inefficient wireless multicast handling become more likely; it does not by itself prove an ISP fault. |
| Buffering changes when other devices stop downloading | Concurrent bandwidth use is a likely contributor. |
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking other bandwidth users, restarting the modem/router and comparing Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet. Follow those checks before deploying a network-wide block.
Block versus contain: choose the least destructive test
| Control | What it does | Best use | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| IGMP snooping | Lets a switch learn which ports requested a multicast group and forward traffic only there | Managed switch or network equipment with multicast controls | Incorrect VLAN, querier or firmware settings can prevent legitimate multicast from reaching clients |
| Unknown-multicast blocking | Drops multicast for which the switch has no interested port | Containing unexplained flooding after confirming your network does not need those groups | Can disrupt IPTV, discovery or other services that rely on multicast |
| Narrow SSDP rule | Restricts the local discovery group/port instead of all multicast | A short diagnostic test when captures point to SSDP | Cast, UPnP and DLNA discovery may fail |
| Unscoped multicast block | Stops multicast broadly, often across the whole LAN | Almost never the first choice | Highest chance of breaking TV, casting and smart-home functions |
NETGEAR describes IGMP snooping as intelligent multicast forwarding and documents blocking unknown multicast as a separate control. In practice, containing unwanted traffic is safer than dropping every multicast packet.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
How to test multicast flooding safely
- Record a baseline. Reproduce the buffering with the same title and quality setting. Note whether it affects one TV, one app or all streams, and test casting before making any change.
- Try wired Ethernet. Connect the TV directly to the router or switch, if practical, and repeat the stream. A major improvement points toward the wireless path or its multicast handling.
- Remove competing traffic. Pause downloads, cloud backups, game updates and other high-bandwidth streams. If the TV stabilizes, congestion—not multicast alone—may be the explanation.
- Inspect the network. On a managed switch or router, look for multicast counters, IGMP membership and unknown-multicast events. A packet capture can confirm UDP port 1900 and destination 239.255.255.250, along with any other groups being transmitted.
- Enable IGMP snooping first. In the switch or router’s multicast settings, turn on IGMP snooping (the exact label and location vary by vendor). Apply it to the TV’s LAN/VLAN and keep a record of the previous setting so you can undo it.
- Retest the original stream. Use the same TV, app, network band and playback quality as the baseline. A change is meaningful only when the test conditions match.
- Test dependent features immediately. Try Google Cast discovery, UPnP/DLNA playback, IPTV channels and any smart-home controller that finds devices automatically. If one fails, restore the prior multicast setting or narrow the rule further.
- Use a narrow SSDP restriction only if needed. If the capture shows discovery traffic flooding the network and snooping is unavailable, test a temporary rule limited to the local SSDP multicast destination and UDP 1900. Do not block all multicast or provider IPTV groups without a documented need.
What the result tells you
Buffering stops after snooping is enabled
The earlier forwarding behavior was probably consuming switch or wireless resources. Leave snooping enabled only after confirming that casting, discovery and IPTV still work, and monitor the TV over several viewing sessions.
Buffering stops only when SSDP is blocked
Discovery traffic was a plausible trigger, but the side effects are expected. Keep the rule limited to the affected segment or device if your equipment supports that scope, and provide another way to connect devices that can no longer discover one another automatically.

Nothing changes
Remove the test rule and investigate signal strength, interference, router placement, TV software, app-specific failures, available throughput and ISP congestion. A wired connection that also buffers makes wireless multicast an unlikely primary cause.

- Write down the original snooping, multicast-filtering and firewall values.
- Change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause.
- After every change, test streaming, casting, UPnP/DLNA and IPTV separately.
- Restore the previous configuration immediately if discovery disappears, channels fail or other devices lose connectivity.
The practical verdict is conditional: multicast containment can stop buffering when multicast flooding is the bottleneck. IGMP snooping is usually the safer first intervention because it preserves requested groups instead of disabling a protocol that other devices may need.
