To disable a smart TV’s “snooping” feature, turn off its Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) or viewing-data setting in the TV’s privacy menu. The name and menu path depend on the manufacturer, model, software version, and region. This opt-out applies to a specific type of viewing recognition; it does not necessarily stop app, account, device-usage, advertising, or voice-related data collection.
What the “snooping” feature does
Smart TV privacy discussions commonly use “snooping” to mean Automatic Content Recognition, or ACR. Depending on the platform, ACR can identify content being watched and report viewing information. Roku says its Smart TV Experience can collect what users watch and when through antenna TV and connected devices. Vizio describes its Viewing Data as information about programming, ads, connected devices, and third-party apps.

Some ACR systems can recognize content from an HDMI-connected device as well as from live television. A 2024 peer-reviewed study of Samsung and LG TVs measured ACR activity in external-display viewing modes. That finding applies to the devices and software the researchers tested, not every TV or later software version. Read the 2024 study.

First identify the TV’s manufacturer, model, operating system, software version, and region. Then check Settings for Privacy, Terms, or Viewing Information. Labels such as ACR, Viewing Data, Viewing Information Services, Live Plus, and Smart TV Experience are examples—not interchangeable names guaranteed to appear on every TV. Settings can vary even between versions of the same device or software, as the Network Advertising Initiative’s TV privacy guide cautions.

What changes when you turn it off
An ACR opt-out is intended to stop or reduce the viewing-recognition processing covered by that platform’s setting. It is not a general switch for all data sent by a TV. Check separate controls for app usage, device usage, advertising identifiers, account activity, voice features, and the privacy settings of individual streaming apps.
On Vizio TVs, the company says disabling Viewing Data does not limit separate Activity Data collection. Vizio also says the change deletes historical Viewing Data logs from its database, while tailored advertising on other devices may continue for a period based on data shared previously. Those statements describe Vizio’s policy and should not be assumed to apply to other manufacturers.

Amazon likewise separates Fire TV device-usage data, third-party app usage, interest-based advertising, and over-the-air viewing data. Its FAQ says changing device-usage settings does not affect data processing for Amazon services such as Prime Video. Review the relevant controls individually rather than treating one option as a complete privacy opt-out.
What ACR does not necessarily mean
ACR is not by itself evidence that a TV is recording conversations or saving screenshots. LG says its described ACR system uses audio fingerprinting and does not collect or store voice recordings, other audio recordings, screenshots, screen images, or video recordings. This is LG’s explanation of its own system, not a guarantee about every brand’s technology.

If the menu instructions do not match
- Confirm the TV’s model number, operating system, region, and software version in its settings or product information.
- Open the manufacturer’s current support page for that exact model and search for privacy, viewing data, ACR, or content recognition.
- Look for additional privacy or advertising controls after disabling the viewing-recognition option, especially on TVs with separate app and account settings.
- Recheck the privacy menu after a software update, since labels and menu locations may change.
Do not assume a menu path published for one Samsung, Google TV, or Sony model applies to every device in that family. The available documentation here does not establish a single current path for those platforms; use the instructions for the specific TV and software version.

Evidence on whether an opt-out stops ACR traffic
In their 2024 study of Samsung and LG smart TVs, Anselmi and co-authors reported that ACR operated when the TVs were used as external displays, and that opting out stopped observed traffic to ACR servers in their experiments. The result is useful evidence for those test conditions, not a guarantee for every model, region, or later firmware. See the peer-reviewed study.
