Choose a traditional deadbolt if you want purely mechanical operation and do not need apps, codes or remote status. Choose a smart deadbolt if keyless entry, temporary credentials or connected alerts solve a real household problem and you are prepared to manage batteries, accounts and (on some models) a network.

Neither category is automatically more secure. The better choice depends on the specific model’s certification, your door and frame, the way people exit in an emergency and how reliably you can maintain the lock.

What you are actually comparing

A “smart lock” and a “traditional deadbolt” are not always different physical lock families. A deadbolt can be mechanical or electronic. The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) lists electronic deadbolts alongside familiar single-cylinder and double-cylinder designs. In practice, the central choice is usually key operation versus electronic access and connectivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A traditional deadbolt normally uses a key outside and a thumb turn inside. A smart deadbolt may replace the exterior key operation with a keypad, phone, fingerprint reader or another electronic method, while retaining a mechanical key cylinder or another backup. Features vary widely: some locks work entirely at the door, some need Bluetooth, and some add Wi-Fi through a built-in radio or bridge.

Compare the actual lock model, not the category label. A certified mechanical lock fitted to a strong, correctly prepared door can be a better choice than an uncertified electronic model installed badly. Conversely, a well-fitted electronic deadbolt can make controlled access much easier for a busy household.

Quick decision: which type fits your household?

Choose a traditional deadbolt when… Choose a smart deadbolt when…
You want operation that does not depend on batteries, an app or a network. You will regularly use keyless entry, temporary codes or remote status.
Everyone who needs entry can manage a physical key. Family members, guests or service workers need separate credentials.
You prefer fewer accounts, permissions and software updates. You accept account and app management in exchange for convenience.
You want the simpler ownership routine and generally lower purchase direction described by the manufacturer. You can monitor battery warnings and follow the model’s documented backup-entry procedure.
Your door has nonstandard dimensions that make electronic retrofit compatibility uncertain. The specific model is confirmed for your door thickness, backset, handing and existing preparation.

This is a needs decision, not a universal security ranking. BHMA certification, the lock’s ratings, installation quality and the condition of the door and frame matter in either category.

Security: what the evidence can and cannot tell you

Look for model-specific BHMA certification

BHMA says its Secure Home certified products are tested for security, durability and finish. Its consumer security guidance also says products without the Secure Home label are not assured to have third-party certification under that program. Check the exact model’s current listing rather than assuming that every product marketed as “smart,” “electronic” or “heavy duty” has been tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Certification is evidence that a defined test program was applied; it is not a promise that a lock defeats every break-in method or that the entire entry assembly is secure. The sources available for this comparison do not provide a quantitative, category-wide test showing that smart deadbolts resist break-ins better or worse than mechanical deadbolts.

Read the three BHMA grades separately

BHMA’s ratings page uses the grades Good (C), Better (B), Best (A). Those grades apply separately to security, durability and finish. They are not one combined score. A model could have a “Best” security grade but a different grade for finish, so record all three categories when comparing products.

BHMA category What the grade describes How to use it
Security Performance in the program’s security testing. Use the model’s security grade as one part of your risk assessment.
Durability Performance in durability testing. Useful for doors that receive frequent daily use.
Finish Performance of the visible finish in the finish testing. Relevant to appearance and finish longevity, not a substitute for security evidence.

The door is part of the lock installation

A deadbolt does not secure a door in isolation. Door thickness, backset, handing, existing holes, the bolt’s alignment and the condition of the frame all affect whether the mechanism works correctly. BHMA’s deadbolt guidance calls for checking these dimensions and following the manufacturer’s installation instructions. A lock that binds, fails to throw fully or leaves the strike misaligned can reduce both reliability and practical security, regardless of whether it is mechanical or electronic.

The supplied sources do not include a comparative test of complete doors, frames or strike plates. Do not treat a lock upgrade alone as proof that an entire entry is secure. Inspect the door and frame, and obtain professional help when the opening is damaged, unusually thick, narrow, warped or otherwise outside the product’s stated range.

Single-cylinder and double-cylinder choices

Single-cylinder deadbolt

BHMA describes the single-cylinder deadbolt as “The most common deadbolt used for households.” Its deadbolt types page specifies: “Single-cylinder deadbolts have a keyhole on the exterior side and a thumb turn lock on the interior side.” You can lock or unlock from outside with a key and from inside without a key.

This arrangement provides quick interior operation, which is important during a fire or another emergency. It also means that a door with glass close to the lock may present a different physical risk profile than a solid door; evaluate the complete installation rather than the cylinder alone.

Double-cylinder deadbolt

A double-cylinder unit requires a key on both sides. BHMA notes that this can make emergency exit more difficult. Before choosing one, consider whether occupants can always find and use the interior key quickly, whether local rules apply and whether the arrangement is appropriate for the door’s location. Never hide an interior key where it could delay an exit.

Electronic locks have their own egress designs. Some retain an interior thumb turn; others use a button, lever or motorized mechanism. Confirm the exact interior operation and practice it with every occupant before relying on the lock.

What smart features add—and what they require

Keyless and temporary access

A keypad can let residents enter without carrying a key. Separate codes can identify household members or service providers, and codes can be revoked without collecting a physical key. A phone-based system can provide another entry method, but it may depend on Bluetooth, the phone’s battery and the lock’s app.

  • Passcode Entry: This keypad lock offers 20 access codes for family use and a temporary code for single-use guest entry
  • One-Time Code: A one-time PIN code can be set for door opening and will automatically be deleted after use
  • Smart Locking: Features an automatic door lock that can be set to lock in 10-99 seconds (off by default) and one-touch auto-lock by pressing and holding any key on the keypad for 2 seconds
  • Long Battery Life & Low Battery Indicator: Powered by 4 AA batteries (not included), lasts up to 365 days. A red light indicator alerts you when battery level drops below 15%
  • Security Deadbolt: Provides reliable home protection with its sturdy aluminum alloy construction, weather resistance (IP54), durability, anti-peeping user code protection, low battery indicator, and solid lock cylinder.

These features are valuable only if they match your routine. If you rarely share access and everyone is comfortable with keys, electronic credentials may add maintenance without solving a problem. If you regularly host guests, manage deliveries or need to let in a caregiver, separate credentials may justify the added complexity.

Remote status and control

Remote locking, unlocking or status checks generally require a network connection or a bridge, depending on the model. A lock that works locally over Bluetooth is not automatically controllable from outside the home. Read the product’s connectivity diagram and distinguish local operation from internet-enabled features.

Notifications and manufacturer-specific behavior

Schlage’s comparison material describes battery indicators and notifications for its own products. Those alerts and backup methods are product-specific; do not assume another manufacturer provides the same warning, timing or emergency power option. Before purchase, verify exactly how the model signals low power and what happens when the battery is exhausted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if the battery dies?

Battery failure is the most important smart-lock contingency to understand before installation. The answer is model-specific, so read the installation and owner documentation rather than relying on a category assumption. Possible arrangements include an exterior emergency power contact, a concealed mechanical key cylinder, a removable battery pack or a lock that remains mechanically operable from inside. The presence, location and procedure differ by model.

  1. Identify the normal power source. Note the battery type, location and replacement procedure in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Find the low-battery warning. Confirm whether the lock uses a keypad signal, an app notification, an audible alert or more than one method.
  3. Test the documented backup entry. Do this while the lock is installed and powered, so you know where the emergency contacts or key cylinder are.
  4. Keep the required backup item available. If the procedure needs a physical key or an external battery, store it where it can be reached without defeating the purpose of the lock.
  5. Set a maintenance reminder. Replace batteries according to the model’s instructions and sooner if warnings appear; do not wait for total failure.

A traditional deadbolt avoids electronic battery dependence, but it still needs a working key, a freely moving thumb turn and periodic checks for alignment and wear. “No battery” does not mean “no maintenance.”

Do you need Wi-Fi?

No. Wi-Fi is not inherent to every smart deadbolt. Some models provide keypad operation and local Bluetooth access without a home network. Others require Wi-Fi, directly or through a hub, for remote notifications and control. The app may also require an account even when the lock can be operated locally.

  • Integrated eufy ecosystem: If you have a eufy doorbell, you can add your wifi door lock to your routines and control devices together for keyless entry within the eufy Security app.

Check these points in the specifications:

  • Whether the lock works when the internet is down.
  • Whether Bluetooth is required for initial setup or local unlocking.
  • Whether a separate bridge or hub is needed for remote access.
  • Which functions stop when the app, account or cloud service is unavailable.
  • How firmware and security updates are delivered.

CISA’s “Protecting Your Digital Home” guidance applies to connected locks as part of a wider connected home. Secure the Wi-Fi network, change default credentials, review app permissions and enable updates where available. Those are prudent controls, not a guarantee that a particular lock is secure.

Door-fit checklist before you buy

Compatibility is a prerequisite, not an installation detail to resolve afterward. Compare the product’s stated range with your door and existing hardware.

  • Door thickness: measure the slab and check the model’s supported range.
  • Backset: confirm the distance from the door edge to the center of the bore hole.
  • Handing and orientation: verify whether the mechanism supports your left- or right-hand configuration and how it calibrates.
  • Existing preparation: check bore-hole size, edge-bore dimensions and the spacing of existing mounting holes.
  • Deadbolt and strike alignment: make sure the bolt enters the strike without forcing the door.
  • Interior clearance: confirm that trim, glass, screens and storm doors do not interfere with the interior housing.
  • Manufacturer instructions: follow the exact preparation and installation requirements; do not enlarge or relocate holes casually.

If any measurement falls outside the documented range, stop and ask a locksmith or door-hardware professional to assess the opening. A professional is especially useful for historic, metal, multi-point or otherwise nonstandard doors.

Installation and first-day checks

For either type

  1. Remove the existing hardware only after recording the orientation of the bolt and strike.
  2. Inspect the door edge, frame and screw holes for splitting, looseness or misalignment.
  3. Install the bolt and exterior/interior components exactly as shown in the instructions.
  4. Test the deadbolt with the door open first. It should extend and retract smoothly without scraping.
  5. Close the door and test again. Do not use the thumb turn or motor to force a bolt into a misaligned strike.
  6. Confirm that the door can be opened from inside using the intended egress method.

Additional smart-lock checks

  1. Install the specified batteries and complete the model’s calibration or handing procedure.
  2. Create the primary account and change any default credentials.
  3. Add only the users and permissions you need; remove test codes and former occupants.
  4. Test local entry, the documented backup method and low-battery indication.
  5. If remote access is offered, test it from outside the home and then test operation with the internet unavailable.
  6. Enable available firmware updates and record how to receive future security notices.

Ownership trade-offs and cost direction

Mechanical locks are typically less expensive than electronic locks, according to Schlage’s category comparison, but that is manufacturer guidance rather than a current market-wide price survey. The available evidence does not establish a reliable average purchase price, battery-life figure or comparative failure rate for the two categories.

Smart-lock ownership can include batteries, a bridge or hub, an app account and the time needed to manage users and updates. A traditional lock’s ongoing needs are usually keys, occasional lubrication or alignment work and eventual hardware replacement. Consider the value of the access problem being solved, not just the shelf price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Ownership factor Traditional deadbolt Smart deadbolt
Power Mechanical operation; no batteries. Battery-powered electronic operation; exact battery and warning behavior are model-specific.
Credentials Physical keys. May support keypad, phone or other electronic credentials, often alongside a mechanical fallback.
Remote features Not provided by the mechanical lock itself. May be available, depending on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a hub and the manufacturer’s service.
Administration Copy, issue or recover physical keys. Add, change and revoke codes or app users; manage permissions and updates.
Failure planning Keep a usable key and maintain alignment. Monitor batteries and know the documented emergency-entry method.

Which is more secure?

There is no evidence here for a universal winner. Compare the model’s BHMA certification and separate security, durability and finish grades; verify the installation fit; inspect the door and frame; and evaluate how occupants will enter and exit. A smart label does not establish certification, and a mechanical design does not automatically make a poor installation safe.

Electronic access introduces additional account, app, network and update considerations. Mechanical access avoids those digital dependencies but relies on key control and physical operation. The more connected the lock, the more important CISA’s basic digital-home practices become: secure the network, replace default credentials, limit app permissions and apply updates when available.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Write down the access problem you are solving: shared entry, temporary guests, remote status or simply replacing worn hardware.
  2. Decide whether a single-cylinder interior thumb turn is appropriate, or whether a double-cylinder design’s keyed interior would create an unacceptable egress delay.
  3. Measure door thickness, backset, handing and existing preparation.
  4. Shortlist models with a current, model-specific BHMA Secure Home listing when certification is a priority.
  5. Record each candidate’s three BHMA grades separately: security, durability and finish.
  6. For a smart model, document battery type, low-battery warning, backup entry, app requirement, connectivity and update process.
  7. Confirm that the interior operation is easy for every occupant, including children, older adults and visitors who may need to exit quickly.
  8. Plan installation and test the lock with the door open and closed before relying on it.

Bottom line for common household situations

Apartment or rental with no need for remote access

A correctly fitted traditional single-cylinder deadbolt is the straightforward choice when the lease permits replacement and everyone can use keys. Obtain approval before changing hardware and preserve the original components.

Family sharing access with caregivers or frequent guests

A smart deadbolt can be worthwhile if separate, revocable credentials eliminate repeated key handoffs. Choose only after confirming the door fit, battery warning and backup entry, and keep the interior egress simple.

Remote property or frequent travel

Remote status may be useful, but it creates network, account and update dependencies. Verify what remains functional during an internet outage and who can recover access if the app or account is unavailable.

Older or unusual door

Prioritize measurement and professional assessment. A standard mechanical lock that fits correctly is preferable to an electronic retrofit that binds, leaves gaps or cannot be calibrated.

Household that dislikes apps and maintenance

Choose a certified, correctly installed traditional deadbolt and maintain the key, bolt and strike. The absence of electronic features is an advantage when those features would not be used.
