1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose an integrated smart lock-camera-doorbell only when the lock fits your door, its fixed camera angle suits the entry, and its app, storage and smart-home support meet your needs. Choose a separate video doorbell when independent camera placement, wired power, easier replacement or mix-and-match component selection matters more. Neither arrangement is universally safer or better; the right choice depends on your door, wiring, viewing angle, maintenance tolerance and exact model.
What you are actually choosing
An integrated product combines a door lock, visitor camera and doorbell in one entry device. The lock controls access, while the camera shows who is outside and the doorbell triggers notifications or a call. eufy’s Video Smart Lock S330 and TP-Link’s Smart Video Door Lock are manufacturer-documented examples of this format. TP-Link describes its device as combining a doorbell, 2K camera, ultra-wide view and lock functions such as remote control, live view, two-way audio, alarms and notifications.

A separate setup keeps the access mechanism and video device independent. You can pair a smart lock with a video doorbell, or use a conventional lock beside the doorbell. The camera can be mounted where it gives the best view, while the lock can be selected for its own fit, keyless-entry method and power system. Independence also means two installation points, two device platforms in some cases and potentially separate maintenance routines.
Quick comparison
| Decision factor | Integrated lock-camera-doorbell | Separate video doorbell and lock |
|---|---|---|
| Door compatibility | The lock must meet the door’s cross-bore, backset, hole, thickness and construction requirements. A mismatch prevents installation regardless of camera features. | The doorbell and lock are assessed separately. A doorbell may fit the exterior wall or trim even when a particular retrofit lock does not fit the door. |
| Camera position | Fixed in relation to the lock hardware. The resulting sightline depends on the lock’s height and the door’s geometry. | Can be mounted at a more useful height or angle, subject to the doorbell’s mounting and wiring limits. |
| Power choices | Model-specific battery or wiring arrangement; charging or replacement affects both access and video availability if they share power. | Lock and doorbell can use different power strategies. Some doorbells support battery and hardwired operation. |
| Recording | Storage may be in a chime or hub, on a card, or in the cloud, depending on the model. Some features may still upload data. | The doorbell’s local and cloud options are evaluated independently of the lock. |
| Replacement and upgrades | One device failure can remove locking, doorbell and camera functions together. | You can replace the camera or lock without necessarily changing the other component. |
| Smart-home compatibility | One product’s supported platforms determine the combined experience. | Compatibility must be checked for the exact lock, doorbell and any bridge or automation service. |
| Installation complexity | One physical location, but lock installation is mechanically demanding and door measurements are critical. | Two devices and possibly two apps, with more flexibility in placement and wiring. |
When an integrated device is the better fit
Your door meets the mechanical specifications
Measure before comparing features. The eufy Video Smart Lock S330 product documentation specifies cross-bore, backset, hole and door-thickness requirements. Those dimensions are not universal retrofit standards. Door material, edge shape, existing mortise hardware, storm-door clearance and trim can all affect whether the lock body and exterior camera assembly can be installed.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the exact installation diagram for the model you are considering. A product that fits a standard wood door may not fit a metal security door, narrow stile, multipoint lock or unusually thick entry. If the documentation does not clearly cover your construction, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than assuming an adapter will solve it.
You want one consolidated entry device
An integrated unit reduces the number of exterior devices and gives one physical point for access control, visitor video and doorbell alerts. This can be attractive on a small porch, a rental where exterior alterations are limited, or an entry where visual simplicity matters.
The trade-off is shared dependence. A depleted battery, failed lock electronics or unavailable app can affect several functions at once. Confirm how you can enter during a flat battery or network outage: a physical key, emergency power contact, keypad, removable battery or another method must be documented for that model. Do not assume that a camera with a backup battery also guarantees electronic unlocking.
The fixed camera view covers your approach
Because the camera is attached to the lock, its height and angle are predetermined by the hardware. Stand where visitors normally wait and check whether the lens can see faces without excessive view of the floor, ceiling, adjacent windows or a neighboring property. A recessed doorway, outward-opening screen door or step can make the fixed position less effective.
Some integrated products advertise wide-angle views, but a wide specification does not guarantee a useful image at your particular threshold. Door swing, porch columns and lighting at night determine the practical field of view. Use the manufacturer’s mounting drawings and, where available, a temporary paper or cardboard mock-up at the proposed height.
The exact ecosystem meets your requirements
Platform support is product-specific. The eufy Video Smart Lock S330 page states that the model does not support Apple HomeKit, IFTTT or Matter. That statement applies to that model and should not be generalized to every integrated lock. Check whether the exact regional version works with the voice assistant, automations, notifications and user accounts your household already uses.

You have verified storage and privacy behavior
eufy describes local recording on the S330 chime when an SD card is installed, while selected cloud features can send video or thumbnails to cloud services. Local storage therefore does not mean that every feature is permanently local. Confirm which events stay on the chime, which functions require an account or subscription, the supported card capacity and what happens when the card is full.
Read retention and deletion settings before installation. A door-facing camera can capture visitors, delivery workers and passers-by. Aim it at the entry area needed for security and disable or mask unnecessary zones when the product allows it.
When a separate video doorbell is the better fit
You need freedom to place the camera
A separate doorbell can be mounted at the height and lateral position that produce the clearest visitor image, while the lock remains at the position dictated by the door. This is useful when the existing lock is in a narrow stile, when a porch roof blocks a lock-mounted lens, or when you want to watch a gate, package shelf or side approach rather than the lock itself.
Placement is still constrained by the doorbell’s bracket, cable route, Wi-Fi signal and weather rating. Independent placement means more choice, not unlimited choice.

TP-Link lists the Tapo D225 as supporting battery or hardwired use and describes continuous recording in hardwired mode. Its product page also states up to eight months of battery operation; that is a manufacturer specification for that model, and actual duration varies with activity, temperature, signal quality and settings. Do not assume that a battery-powered doorbell records continuously merely because its wired version can.

myQ states up to six months for its Secure View 3-in-1 Smart Lock under assumptions of ten lock/unlock cycles and ten video events per day. That is a model-specific manufacturer estimate, not an independent test and not a general battery expectation for integrated locks. Battery figures from different products are not directly comparable unless their usage assumptions match.
You want component-level upgrades
With separate devices, a better camera can be installed without changing the lock, or a lock can be replaced while the doorbell remains in place. This can reduce disruption when one component reaches end of life. It also leaves you responsible for checking whether the two products can trigger actions for one another; physical coexistence does not automatically create a shared app or automation.
You prefer the doorbell’s storage model
TP-Link describes the Tapo D225 as offering on-device alerts without a monthly fee, microSD storage and optional cloud storage through Tapo Care. The page also links continuous recording to hardwired operation. Card size limits, overwrite behavior, cloud retention and subscription terms should be verified for the exact regional model.

Reolink’s doorbell category describes wired models as supporting continuous recording and battery models as easier to place or install. Those are manufacturer category descriptions, not a guarantee for every product in the range. Read the individual model’s recording specifications before making a decision.
The factors that should decide your purchase
1. Door and installation fit comes first
- Record the existing lock’s backset, cross-bore and edge-bore dimensions.
- Measure door thickness and inspect whether the door uses a mortise, multipoint or other nonstandard mechanism.
- Check clearance on both sides for the interior module, exterior camera and any storm or screen door.
- Confirm whether drilling, enlarging holes or altering trim is permitted in your home.
If an integrated lock fails any mandatory dimension, stop comparing cameras and choose another lock format or a separate doorbell.
2. Evaluate the real camera sightline
Draw the area you need to see: the visitor’s face, the threshold, packages and the path to the gate. Then identify areas that should not be recorded, such as neighboring windows or a shared hallway. An integrated camera may be ideal when that rectangle aligns with the lock. A separate doorbell is preferable when the camera must move several inches or feet to avoid an obstruction.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. Map power and maintenance
List how often you are willing to charge a battery, whether a cable can be run to the doorbell, and what happens during a power cut. Wired power can enable continuous recording on models that support it, but it may require an existing transformer, new low-voltage wiring or an electrician. Battery power simplifies placement but introduces charging intervals and possible recording gaps while the unit is removed.
For an integrated lock, ask whether charging requires removing the battery, whether the exterior port is protected, and whether the lock remains usable with a flat battery. For a separate system, the lock and doorbell can fail on different schedules, so maintain two status checks.
4. Separate local, cloud and paid functions
- Local: Determine whether recordings are stored in the lock, chime, hub or microSD card, and whether a card must be purchased separately.
- Cloud: Identify which clips, thumbnails, notifications or remote features leave the home network.
- Paid: Confirm whether a subscription is required for history, person detection, extended retention or sharing. The cited product pages establish that options vary, but they do not establish one universal fee or retention period.
- Failure behavior: Check what remains available when the internet, Wi-Fi, cloud account or storage card is unavailable.
5. Verify ecosystem support by model and region
Do not infer compatibility from a brand family or a retailer listing. Confirm the exact model number and region for Apple Home, Matter, IFTTT, Alexa, Google Home or any other platform you use. The S330’s stated lack of Apple HomeKit, IFTTT and Matter support demonstrates why a feature list must be checked before purchase.
A separate lock and doorbell can still work together inside one manufacturer’s ecosystem. eufy Support documents integration between its Wi-Fi smart locks and video doorbells, allowing a user to visually check a visitor before locking or unlocking. That is an example within eufy’s ecosystem, not evidence of cross-brand compatibility.
6. Plan privacy and legal compliance
Use activity zones, privacy masks and the narrowest useful viewing angle. Tell household members how recordings are accessed and retained, and protect accounts with strong, unique credentials and multi-factor authentication when available.
Reolink’s UK information notes that recording outside your own property can create UK data-protection responsibilities. This is UK-specific information, not legal advice for other jurisdictions. If the camera captures a shared path, street or neighboring property, check current local requirements and adjust the view accordingly.

Installation planning: two practical paths
For an integrated lock-camera-doorbell
- Measure the door: Follow the model’s template for thickness, backset, cross-bore and hole dimensions.
- Inspect existing hardware: Identify mortise, multipoint, deadbolt and trim conditions that could prevent the interior or exterior modules from sitting flush.
- Mock up the camera: Mark the proposed lens position and verify faces, packages and the threshold are visible from normal visitor positions.
- Plan entry during failure: Locate the physical key, emergency power point or other documented fallback before removing the old lock.
- Prepare power: Charge or install the specified battery, and note the app’s low-battery warnings and estimated maintenance interval.
- Configure access: Create owner and guest credentials, disable unused remote functions and enable multi-factor authentication where offered.
- Configure recording: Insert the supported SD card or activate the chosen cloud service, set retention and privacy zones, and test playback.
- Test offline behavior: With the door safely open, verify local unlocking, notifications and recording behavior when Wi-Fi is unavailable.
For a separate doorbell and lock
- Choose the lock independently: Confirm its door fit, entry method, battery and emergency procedure.
- Select the camera position: Mount a temporary marker where the doorbell will sit and check the approach, lighting and privacy boundaries.
- Choose power: Decide between battery and hardwired operation after checking transformer, cable and weather-sealing requirements.
- Install and test the doorbell: Confirm Wi-Fi signal, motion zones, night view, two-way audio and visitor notifications.
- Set storage: Install a compatible microSD card or select cloud storage, then verify retention and overwrite behavior.
- Link devices only when supported: Use documented integrations for the exact models; do not assume that two products can trigger unlocking or camera views simply because they share a network.
- Document maintenance: Record separate battery dates, firmware status and recovery methods for the lock and doorbell.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
The lock does not fit after purchase
This usually results from skipping a required measurement or overlooking a mortise, multipoint or trim obstruction. Recheck the manufacturer’s template before drilling. If a mandatory dimension fails, return the unit if possible rather than forcing the mechanism into an unsafe alignment.
The camera misses faces
Move the camera, not just the detection zone, when the physical sightline is wrong. An integrated device may require a different lock format if the lens is permanently too low, too high or blocked by a screen door. A separate doorbell can often solve the geometry without changing the lock.
“Battery” is mistaken for “continuous recording”
Battery operation generally prioritizes event recording to conserve energy. Continuous recording should be claimed only where the exact product documentation says it is supported, such as the Tapo D225’s hardwired mode description. Check whether changing from wired to battery changes recording, live-view duration or motion sensitivity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Local storage is assumed to mean no cloud transfer
Some products keep recordings locally while sending selected thumbnails, alerts or other features to cloud services. Review each feature’s data path, disable optional uploads where possible and secure the account used to access clips.
The two devices do not integrate
Shared Wi-Fi, the same retailer and similar branding do not establish interoperability. Confirm supported models, firmware, region and required hubs. If no documented integration exists, operate the lock and doorbell as separate systems rather than relying on an unverified automation.
A decision checklist
- Have you measured the door against the exact integrated lock template?
- Does the camera position show the visitor’s face and the area you need without unnecessary neighboring views?
- Can you provide the required wiring, or are you prepared for the product’s charging routine?
- What still works if the battery, internet connection, app or storage card fails?
- Is recording local, cloud-based, paid, card-dependent or a combination?
- Does the exact model support your smart-home platform and region?
- Can every household member and guest use the intended access method?
- Are privacy settings and local recording rules appropriate for the camera’s field of view?
Bottom line
An integrated smart lock-camera-doorbell is the sensible choice for a compatible door when one consolidated device, one entry location and a unified experience outweigh fixed camera placement and shared maintenance risk. A separate video doorbell is the stronger choice when you need independent camera positioning, wired-versus-battery flexibility, model-by-model upgrades or a lock that does not meet an integrated unit’s measurements. Decide in that order: door fit, sightline, power, storage, ecosystem and privacy. The product examples show why those checks must be made for the exact model rather than inferred from the category.
