Some locks accept a 9V alkaline battery while you enter a code; keyed models may unlock with the physical key. Once inside, install the exact battery type and number specified for the lock.
The procedures below distinguish the models covered by current manufacturer instructions, because a method that works on one keypad can fail on another.

Start with the lock model, not a universal trick
Look at the outside escutcheon, keypad, lever, deadbolt face and any paperwork or app records for a model name or number. A Kwikset 905, Kwikset Obsidian, Yale Keyless Connected lock and Schlage keypad lock do not share the same emergency procedure. Before touching the door, check these features:

- Mechanical key cylinder: A visible keyway usually means the physical key is the primary battery-failure fallback.
- Emergency-power contacts: Two metal contacts below a keypad or touchscreen may accept a battery, but only use them when the exact model documentation identifies them as emergency terminals.
- Code availability: Emergency power generally still requires a valid user code or master code. Make sure the person at the door can retrieve the code without relying on the dead lock’s app connection.
- Interior access: Once the door opens, the battery compartment is normally on the inside. Do not remove exterior parts unless the manufacturer’s instructions tell you to.
A depleted battery also does not guarantee that the door is unlocked. Kwikset states that its Premis, Aura, Obsidian and Halo products remain in their last known state when their batteries run out, so a bolt can remain extended or retracted rather than moving automatically. See the manufacturer’s backup-power guidance before assuming what your lock has done.

Choose the documented emergency-entry route
Locks with a mechanical key cylinder
Use the physical key supplied for the lock and follow the turning direction for that exact model. Schlage’s instructions cover the BE365 and the FE575 and FE595 keypad deadbolt or lever. For the listed deadbolts, the current support procedure is to insert the key and turn it 90 degrees clockwise. The lever instructions specify a 270-degree turn. Those angles are not interchangeable, so do not apply the deadbolt movement to a lever or vice versa. The detailed model list and instructions are in Schlage’s emergency key override article.
If the correct key is missing and immediate entry is necessary, Schlage recommends contacting a local locksmith rather than prying the keypad, drilling the cylinder or forcing the lever. A locksmith can verify ownership and use a method appropriate to the door and lock.
Kwikset 905: exterior 9V terminals and continuous contact
The Kwikset 905 Keyless Deadbolt has a specific emergency-power sequence. Use a 9V alkaline battery, not a random battery pack, and touch its two terminals to the two emergency contacts below the keypad.

- Wait for three short beeps.
- Keep the battery touching the terminals while entering the programmed user code.
- Continue holding the battery in place until the lock unlocks.
Kwikset says that removing the battery before the unlock step means the code must be entered again. Keep the battery connected for the entire code-and-motor sequence. The model-specific procedure appears in Kwikset’s 905 battery instructions.
Yale Keyless Connected: bottom terminal, master code and star button
Yale’s Middle East English support page for the Keyless Connected product instructs owners to place a 9V battery on the emergency terminal at the bottom of the device, enter the master code and press the star button. This is a product- and region-specific page, so confirm that your lock is the same Keyless Connected model and that your local documentation uses the same controls before trying it. Follow Yale’s Keyless Connected procedure rather than substituting the Kwikset sequence.

Kwikset Obsidian: touchscreen emergency power
Kwikset documents a different sequence for Obsidian. Touch a 9V battery to the terminals beneath the touchscreen and wait for the screen to illuminate. Enter a valid user code, then wait for the motor to retract the deadbolt. After you are inside, replace the internal batteries immediately. The table is a decision aid, not a universal ranking. If your model is not listed, do not assume that its contacts accept a 9V battery or that its key turns through the same angle. Find the manufacturer’s page for the exact model first.
What to do when the documented method does not work
Stop if the model, terminals or required code do not match the procedure in front of you. Repeating an incompatible sequence can leave you with a locked door and a damaged keypad. Use this order of checks:
- Reconfirm the model. Compare the keypad layout, touchscreen shape, exterior labels and deadbolt or lever style with the support page. Product families often have similar names but different emergency routes.
- Check the backup power source. For a documented 9V procedure, use a fresh 9V alkaline battery and make firm contact with both terminals. Do not hold one terminal only.
- Check the required credential. A temporary code, app login or household nickname is not necessarily the user or master code required during emergency power. Use the credential specified by the manufacturer.
- Repeat only the exact sequence. Some locks require a beep, screen illumination or another signal before the code is accepted. On the Kwikset 905, keep the 9V connected throughout the code entry and unlock movement.
- Escalate without forcing the door. If the key is missing, the contacts are inaccessible, the code is unknown or the motor does not respond after the correct procedure, contact the manufacturer or a local locksmith. Schlage specifically names a locksmith as the fallback when its key is unavailable and urgent access is required.
Do not pry the door, twist the thumb-turn with tools or drill the lock based on a method meant for another product. Damage can turn a routine battery replacement into a door, frame or lock repair.
Replace the batteries as soon as you get inside
Emergency power is a way to regain access, not a replacement for the lock’s internal battery set. The required chemistry and quantity vary by model. August’s battery guidance differentiates among its lock models and advises replacing the complete applicable set together. Do not assume that every smart lock takes the same number of AA cells, accepts lithium cells or works correctly with rechargeable batteries. Use the model’s manual or support page for the exact specification: August’s model-specific replacement guidance.

- Open the interior battery compartment. Use the interior cover or release described for your lock. Avoid disassembling the exterior keypad unless the manual directs you to do so.
- Remove the exhausted set. Note the number and orientation of the cells before removal, then take out the entire installed set.
- Install the specified replacement set. Match the chemistry and quantity for the exact model, and replace the complete set together as advised in the August guidance.
- Close the compartment securely. A loose cover can interfere with the lock’s normal operation, so refit it as the manufacturer shows.
- Verify operation from inside and outside. Follow the lock’s own post-replacement instructions to confirm that it responds to a valid credential and relocks normally. There is no single post-replacement test sequence that applies to every model.
If you used the Kwikset 905 emergency procedure, keep the 9V battery connected until the door has unlocked; changing interior cells is a separate step after entry. For Obsidian, Kwikset says to replace the internal batteries immediately once you are inside.
Learn the warning signals before the next failure
Low-battery indicators are model-specific, and the same color or beep pattern should not be generalized across brands. Schlage’s current guidance, updated August 12, 2026, gives these examples:
- BE365, FE575 and FE595: after a valid access code when batteries are low, the Schlage Button flashes red three times before flashing green. At critically low battery levels, the button blinks red even before a code is entered.
- Schlage Touch models: a red battery indicator flashes after unlocking when the batteries are low and blinks when depletion is critical.

Replace the batteries at the first low-battery warning instead of trying to calculate how many days remain. The manufacturer pages reviewed here do not establish a universal warning-to-failure interval, and remaining time depends on the lock, usage and battery set.
Build a backup plan that works when the app does not
Keep the right emergency item available
If your lock’s official procedure uses exterior 9V terminals, keep a compatible 9V alkaline battery where it can be reached during a lockout. A 9V is not a universal smart-lock accessory: it helps only locks whose documentation identifies those terminals and that procedure. Store it in a known location rather than inside the room protected by the lock.

Protect access to the code or key
For a keypad-only lock, make sure household members know where the required user or master code is recorded. For a keyed model, keep the physical key accessible without depending on the locked room. Kwikset recommends having a backup key available for Kevo, while Schlage documents a key override for the named keypad products.
Test the fallback while the lock is healthy
Read the emergency instructions before an outage and identify the contacts, keyway or terminal. If the procedure requires a particular code, verify that the code is still valid. Replace batteries and confirm normal locking and unlocking according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A short, controlled check is safer than discovering that a key is missing or a code is forgotten during an actual lockout.
Write down model-specific details
Record the exact model, battery chemistry and quantity, the location of the emergency contacts, and the correct code or key location. Include the support-page URL for the lock so another household member can follow the same instructions. Do not write a generic note such as “touch a 9V to the keypad”; that wording could send someone to the wrong terminals on a different product.

Troubleshooting symptoms without making the problem worse
No sound or light when the emergency battery is connected
Confirm that the battery is the type specified by the lock and that both terminals are touching the contacts. Recheck that you are on the documented emergency terminals rather than similarly shaped screws or decorative metal. If the model’s instructions call for a signal before code entry, wait for that signal. If nothing changes after the exact procedure, stop and contact the manufacturer or a locksmith.
The code is rejected during emergency power
Check whether the procedure requires a user code or a master code. The Kwikset 905 uses the user code in the cited sequence, while Yale Keyless Connected’s cited page calls for the master code and star button. Do not substitute the code type from another lock. On the 905, keep the 9V connected and re-enter the code if contact was interrupted.
The keypad accepts the code but the bolt does not retract
Keep the emergency battery in place for the full motor movement when the model requires continuous contact. For Kwikset Obsidian, wait for the motor to retract the deadbolt after entering the valid code. If the correct sequence produces no movement, do not force the bolt; use manufacturer support or a locksmith.
The physical key will not turn
Verify that the key belongs to that lock and that you are following the model’s specified direction and angle. Schlage’s cited deadbolt and lever movements differ substantially. If the key is wrong or unavailable, use the locksmith fallback rather than applying tools to the cylinder.
The lock opened but immediately seems unpowered again
Emergency power is temporary. Install the prescribed interior battery set promptly, especially for Kwikset Obsidian, then perform the model’s normal operation check. Until normal power is restored, do not assume that app controls, automatic relocking or other electronic features are available.
What the manufacturer guidance does not establish
There is no reliable universal number of days between a low-battery warning and complete failure in the cited material, and no named statistic for how often smart-lock owners are locked out. Battery life varies by model and use, so plan around the warning signal and the documented fallback rather than an estimated countdown. The procedures above are manufacturer instructions for named products, not a promise that every smart lock can be opened with a 9V battery or a physical key.
