There is no universal customization winner. Choose Smart Launcher if you want an automatically organized app drawer, built-in widgets and feed features, theme tools, and layouts that can adapt to phones, tablets, foldables, orientations, and aspect ratios. Choose Nova Launcher if you want a more conventional Android launcher with documented subgrid positioning, drag-to-create folders, app-drawer groups, and a workflow closer to the stock launcher. The right choice depends on the controls you actually use, whether a feature is stable or beta, and how the launcher behaves on your own device.

Smart Launcher and Nova take different approaches to customization

Smart Launcher and Nova Launcher are not two skins that expose the same controls under different menus. Their design assumptions differ from the first tap.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Smart Launcher says it rebuilt the home-screen experience around automatic organization and its own navigation model. Its app drawer can sort applications into categories, and Smart Search can find shortcuts, files, calendar events, contacts, and other content. The launcher also combines widgets, a news feed, theme options, and icon-pack tooling in one ecosystem.

Nova has generally aimed to extend the stock Android launcher rather than replace its basic workflow. That makes it familiar to people who expect to place icons by dragging, create folders by dropping one icon on another, arrange a precise grid, and separate applications into drawer groups. Nova gives you more manual control over placement, while Smart Launcher automates more of the initial organization.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

Those philosophies explain why a feature-by-feature checklist is more useful than a single winner. A person who regards exact icon coordinates as essential can find Smart Launcher limiting even if its automatic drawer is convenient. Someone who wants the drawer organized without constant maintenance may prefer Smart Launcher despite the different folder workflow.

At-a-glance comparison

Customization area Smart Launcher Nova Launcher Best fit
Home-screen placement Uses its own layout model; the publisher says it does not offer Nova’s subgrid positioning. Widgets can be resized freely. Provides documented subgrid positioning for finer alignment within the main grid. Nova for pixel-level placement; Smart Launcher for flexible widget sizing without manual grid work.
Folders Folders are created through a menu-based workflow rather than Nova’s drag-together method. Drag one home-screen icon onto another to create a folder; the FAQ also documents app-drawer groups. Nova for familiar, direct folder creation; Smart Launcher for users comfortable with its alternate workflow.
App discovery Automatically sorted app drawer plus Smart Search for shortcuts, files, calendar events, contacts, and more. Traditional drawer organization with groups; Smart Folders and Nova 8.1 Cards are described on an early-beta page and require current-status checking. Smart Launcher for automatic sorting and broad search; Nova for manual grouping.
Widgets and feed Built-in widgets and a customizable news feed are part of the launcher’s feature set. Google Discover requires a separate companion tool; Discover’s behavior is controlled by Google. Smart Launcher if integrated widgets and feed access matter.
Visual styling Blurred user-interface themes and Icon Pack Studio integration are listed in its comparison. Supports extensive launcher customization, but the cited materials do not establish an equivalent built-in feed-and-theme bundle. Smart Launcher for an integrated visual package; Nova for a conventional launcher canvas.
Gestures Custom gestures are available, but Smart Launcher says its gestures do not always map directly to Nova’s. Gesture controls are available, with behavior affected by Android and the device manufacturer. Neither has a universal advantage; test the gestures you depend on.
Multiple screens and foldables Supports independent layouts for different screens; a December 2025 wrap-up described layouts for foldables, tablets, orientations, and aspect ratios. The cited materials do not establish an equivalent independent-layout feature. Smart Launcher for devices that change screen shape or size.
Migration Added Nova-backup import in 2025, but imported layouts still need inspection because features do not match one-for-one. Can export and restore its own launcher setup; the cited materials do not promise complete conversion to Smart Launcher’s model. Smart Launcher for moving from Nova, with manual cleanup expected.
Paid features A Nova-user FAQ described a 14-day refund policy and said the then-announced version 7 would be a free update with the license carried over. Prime includes features such as notification badges, removes ads, and is offered as a yearly subscription or lifetime purchase. Compare the current offer shown in your region before paying; current prices were not established in the cited materials.

Home-screen grids, subgrids, and widget placement

Why Nova’s subgrid matters

Nova’s subgrid positioning is the decisive feature for users who want icons to sit between the ordinary grid lines. It lets you keep a regular overall grid while positioning individual icons and widgets with smaller increments. This is useful for asymmetrical designs, tightly aligned rows, and layouts that reserve narrow gaps for visual balance.

Nova’s approach also suits people who manually rebuild a layout after changing wallpaper, icon size, or screen density. You can decide where each element goes instead of accepting an automatically arranged result.

How Smart Launcher handles placement

Smart Launcher’s comparison explicitly says it does not have Nova’s subgrid positioning. That is not the same as saying it cannot be customized: the launcher offers its own home-screen arrangement and allows free widget resizing. If your priority is making a widget fit a particular panel, that resizing may matter more than subgrid increments.

The practical distinction is control granularity. Nova gives you more control over the coordinates of individual items. Smart Launcher gives you a different layout system and more freedom to resize widgets within that system. Before switching, write down whether you rely on subgrid alignment or mainly on getting widgets to fit cleanly.

Folders and app-drawer organization

Nova’s drag-to-create folders and drawer groups

Nova’s documented home-screen folder method is familiar: drag one icon on top of another, and the launcher creates a folder containing both. You can continue dragging icons into it. Nova’s FAQ also describes app-drawer groups, which let you organize applications without placing every shortcut on the home screen.

This model is manual but predictable. It works well when you maintain a small number of carefully named folders such as Work, Travel, Finance, or Media and want the same structure on every device.

Smart Launcher’s automatic categories and folder workflow

Smart Launcher automatically sorts applications in its drawer, reducing the need to classify every new installation. Its folders are created through a menu rather than Nova’s drag-together gesture. That difference can feel minor during setup but significant if you frequently create folders while arranging a new phone.

Automatic sorting is valuable when your library changes often. It can also conflict with users who insist on a personally chosen category structure. Decide whether you want the drawer to maintain itself or whether you want to curate it manually.

Search, shortcuts, and finding apps quickly

Smart Launcher’s broader Smart Search

Smart Search is more than an app-name filter. Smart Launcher says it can surface shortcuts, files, calendar events, contacts, and other content. That makes the launcher a starting point for actions as well as a list of installed applications.

If you often search for a contact, an upcoming event, or a document instead of opening the corresponding app first, this integrated approach can reduce steps. It is also a reason to test search on your own device: indexing permissions, installed apps, and Android version can affect what appears.

Nova’s manual organization and newer beta concepts

Nova’s conventional workflow favors drawer groups and direct placement. Its official Nova 8.1 page also describes Smart Folders and Nova 8.1 Cards, but that page labels the release an early beta. Treat those features as experimental until the current release notes or in-app version screen confirm that they are stable and available to you.

Do not choose Nova solely because a beta feature appears to solve a problem. Verify whether it is enabled in the version you can install, whether it remains in the same menu, and whether its behavior is reliable enough for your daily setup.

Widgets, news feeds, icons, and themes

Smart Launcher’s integrated visual tools

Smart Launcher’s comparison lists built-in widgets, a customizable news feed, blurred user-interface themes, and integration with Icon Pack Studio. These features are designed to work as a coordinated visual system rather than as isolated add-ons.

That integration can simplify a themed setup. You can change the wallpaper, icon treatment, widget style, and feed presentation without assembling as many separate components. The trade-off is that the launcher’s visual language may feel less familiar if you are accustomed to stock Android.

Nova and Google Discover

Nova’s FAQ says Google Discover integration requires a separate companion tool. It also notes that Discover itself is controlled by Google. In practice, this means a Discover panel is not entirely a Nova-controlled surface: availability and behavior can change with Google’s service, the companion component, and your device configuration.

Anyone who considers a feed essential should test the complete arrangement rather than assuming that installing Nova alone provides it. If you prefer a launcher with feed functionality listed as part of its own comparison, Smart Launcher is the more direct fit according to the cited materials.

Gestures and navigation behavior

Gesture mapping is not interchangeable

Both launchers provide gesture customization, but Smart Launcher states that its gestures differ from Nova’s and that some actions do not have direct matches. A gesture-heavy Nova setup therefore should not be expected to import perfectly into Smart Launcher.

List the gestures you actually use—such as swiping on an empty area, double-tapping, or pulling down for search—and test each one after switching. A launcher can advertise gesture support while still requiring you to learn different trigger areas, directions, or available actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android and manufacturer limits

Nova’s documentation warns that gesture navigation depends on Android and the device maker, and that third-party launchers can behave differently from the system launcher. The same caution applies to Smart Launcher: navigation mode, button-versus-gesture settings, battery restrictions, and manufacturer software can all change the result.

The reviewed materials do not establish a universal performance or gesture winner. Test on the phone and Android version you will use, especially if one-handed navigation or reliable edge gestures is important.

Tablets, foldables, and multiple layouts

Smart Launcher says it supports independent layouts for different screens. Its December 23, 2025 year-end post described layouts for foldables, tablets, screen orientations, and aspect ratios. This matters when a device changes from a narrow cover display to a wide inner display, rotates between portrait and landscape, or connects to a different screen size.

With independent layouts, you can keep a compact phone arrangement while using a wider tablet or unfolded display without manually rebuilding every screen each time. The cited Nova materials do not establish an equivalent independent-layout capability, so users with changing screen geometries should treat Smart Launcher as the stronger documented option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The December 2025 post also said the Google Play rollout of Smart Launcher 6.6 had been delayed during review at that time. That is a historical rollout note, not a statement of current availability. Check the Play Store listing and the launcher’s in-app version information before relying on a particular release.

Switching from Nova to Smart Launcher

Smart Launcher reported adding Nova backup import in 2025. Importing can save setup time, but it is not a promise that every Nova control will have an exact equivalent. Smart Launcher’s own comparison warns that its workflows do not exactly mirror Nova’s.

  1. Record your current setup. Note the home-screen grid, icon size, widget dimensions, folder names, drawer groups, gestures, wallpaper, and any companion tools.
  2. Create a current Nova backup. Use Nova’s backup and restore function and keep a copy somewhere you can access after changing launchers.
  3. Install Smart Launcher and select its Nova import option. Import the backup when prompted, using the version of Smart Launcher that currently exposes the feature.
  4. Inspect every screen. Check icon positions, folders, widgets, labels, wallpaper, and the app drawer. Look for items that were moved, omitted, or replaced by Smart Launcher’s own categories.
  5. Rebuild unmatched functions. Recreate gestures, drawer groups, feed settings, and any subgrid-dependent arrangement that did not translate.
  6. Use the new setup for several days before deleting Nova. Confirm that notifications, search results, navigation gestures, and work-critical shortcuts behave as expected.

Keeping Nova installed until the new layout is proven gives you a recovery path. It also lets you compare a specific missing function rather than trying to remember how it worked.

Paid features, subscriptions, and licensing

Nova Prime

Nova’s FAQ says Prime includes features such as notification badges, removes ads, and is available as either a yearly subscription or a lifetime purchase. The reviewed material does not establish current prices, regional taxes, renewal terms, or whether a particular promotion is active, so check the purchase screen in your country before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smart Launcher licensing notes

Smart Launcher’s Nova-user FAQ described a 14-day refund policy and said the then-announced version 7 would be a free update with the license carried over. Those terms are time-sensitive. Confirm the current refund window, entitlement, and upgrade policy on the purchase screen or current support documentation rather than assuming the 2025 announcement still governs every account.

Do not compare the launchers on price alone. A cheaper license is not useful if the launcher lacks the grid, drawer, feed, or multi-screen behavior that your layout requires.

Stable releases versus beta features

Version labels matter in this comparison. Nova’s official Nova 8.1 page calls the release an early beta and describes Cards, Nova Now, and Smart Folders. Those details should not be treated as guaranteed stable features. Beta software can change menus, alter behavior, or be withdrawn.

Smart Launcher’s December 2025 wrap-up discusses version 6.6 and a delayed Google Play review at that time. Because app distribution and release status change, verify the current stable version, beta enrollment requirements, and Play Store availability on the day you install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a feature is essential—such as a drawer group, a foldable layout, or a feed—confirm three things: that it appears in your installed build, that it is enabled in settings, and that it survives a restart and a launcher reset.

A practical decision framework

Choose Smart Launcher when these priorities dominate

  • You want the app drawer to sort applications automatically.
  • You search for files, contacts, calendar events, and shortcuts from the launcher.
  • You prefer built-in widgets and a customizable feed in the same launcher.
  • You want blurred themes and Icon Pack Studio integration as part of a coordinated visual setup.
  • You use a tablet, foldable, multiple orientations, or changing aspect ratios and want independent layouts.
  • You are willing to learn a folder and gesture workflow that differs from Nova’s.

Choose Nova when these priorities dominate

  • You need subgrid positioning for precise icon and widget alignment.
  • You want to create folders by dragging icons together.
  • You organize the app drawer into manually controlled groups.
  • You prefer a workflow that extends stock Android rather than replacing its basic model.
  • You depend on a carefully tuned set of Nova gestures and want to preserve their familiar behavior.
  • You are comfortable checking whether newer Smart Folders or Cards features are still beta before using them.

When neither is an automatic fit

If your choice depends on a feature not documented in the cited materials—such as a specific backup format, a manufacturer-only gesture, or a particular accessibility behavior—test both launchers on your exact phone before changing your primary setup. The available documentation does not establish a universal speed, battery, or stability winner.

Testing checklist before you switch

  • Set the launcher as default and reboot the phone.
  • Place icons at the exact positions you use every day.
  • Resize your largest widgets and verify that they remain usable after rotation.
  • Create a folder and confirm that its name, preview, and opening behavior suit you.
  • Search for an app, a contact, a calendar event, and a file if those indexes matter to you.
  • Try every gesture you use from the home screen, lock screen, and app drawer.
  • Test notification badges and notification shade access.
  • On a foldable or tablet, switch screens and rotate the device to inspect each layout.
  • Check the feed and any companion component required for it.
  • Confirm the current license, refund window, and subscription or lifetime terms before purchasing.

Bottom line: customize the way you think

Smart Launcher is the better customization choice for people who want automation, integrated search and feed tools, coordinated themes, and layouts that adapt to different screens. Nova is the better choice for people who define customization as precise manual placement, subgrid control, familiar folders, and drawer groups.

For a switch from Nova, Smart Launcher’s backup import can reduce setup work, but it cannot erase the underlying design differences. Import first, audit every screen, and rebuild the functions that have no direct match. Whichever launcher you choose, judge gestures and day-to-day behavior on your own Android device rather than assuming that a feature list predicts the result.
