The most effective privacy changes are platform-specific: in Alexa, review and delete Voice History, set automatic deletion, and audit skills; in Google Home, configure Home History, Web & App Activity, audio-improvement sharing, and wake-phrase sensitivity; in Apple Home, delete Siri History, limit Personal Requests, review Location Services, and decide whether to share samples through Improve Siri & Dictation. These controls reduce retained data and unwanted access, but they do not make cloud assistants completely local.
What these settings actually control
A smart speaker normally performs two separate jobs. First, it waits locally for an activation phrase or a physical control. After activation, the request is generally processed by the provider’s cloud service so it can answer questions, control devices, or run a third-party skill. Second, the provider may keep activity records for history, personalization, security, diagnostics, or product improvement.

Deleting a history entry changes what remains in the account; it does not undo the processing needed to answer the original request. Likewise, turning off a personalization or improvement option does not mean that an assistant will never receive audio after an activation event. Treat the controls below as data-minimization choices, not as a guarantee of offline operation.
Menu names can change with app, operating-system, account, and regional rollouts. If a label differs, look for the same function under the device’s privacy, history, security, or analytics settings rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Alexa: review everything stored under Alexa Privacy
1. Check and delete Voice History
Open the Alexa app and go to More → Alexa Privacy. Voice History can include the recording made after a wake-word detection, its text transcript, typed requests, and requests that were captured after a false wake. Amazon says Echo devices provide a visual or audible indication when the wake word is recognized and audio is streamed to the cloud.
Use the history view to inspect entries you do not recognize. A false activation can appear as a normal item, so listening to the clip and reading its transcript helps you distinguish an accidental wake from an intentional request. Delete individual entries when you need a targeted cleanup, or use the bulk deletion controls offered on that screen.
2. Enable automatic deletion and voice-deletion commands
Alexa Privacy includes automatic-deletion choices. Select the shortest retention period that still fits your household’s need for voice history, or choose manual deletion if you need to keep records for troubleshooting. Amazon also provides a setting that enables spoken commands such as Delete what I just said and Delete everything I said today.

It is therefore worth testing essential routines after changing the policy, especially if several household members use the same account.

3. Remove third-party smart-home history
Alexa Privacy also exposes history about compatible third-party devices, including status and usage information that Alexa receives from them. You can delete that information at once or configure automatic deletion after a period available in the app. This cleanup does not necessarily remove every device identifier or every request record, and Amazon warns that deleting smart-home history can affect some features.
4. Audit skills and advertising controls
Open the skill-permission area and remove access that is no longer necessary. A skill may have access to information required for its function, so read each permission before disabling it; deleting a skill alone is not a substitute for checking account-linked permissions.
Review interest-based advertising controls in the same privacy area. These settings govern personalization based on account-linked activity. They do not turn off the cloud processing required to answer an Alexa request, and they do not prevent a wake-word event from being sent for processing.

On speakers used by guests, children, tenants, or visitors, avoid leaving sensitive routines and personal information available through voice. Use separate household accounts where possible, remove unnecessary skills, and review whether a routine can unlock a door, open a garage, or disclose an address. Place a device with access to private calendars, shopping lists, or communications in a room where only trusted users can speak to it.

Google Home and Nest: separate Home History from advertising choices
1. Configure Home History and automatic deletion
In the Google Home experience, open the activity or privacy controls for Home History. Review the recorded activity, delete selected items or a time range, and choose an automatic-deletion period. Google documents an 18-month default for Home History, with options for 3 months, 36 months, manual deletion, or no automatic deletion. The exact choices shown can depend on the account and rollout.
Turning Home History off does not mean that no data is retained immediately. Google says activity may remain for up to 24 hours for service, safety, and feedback purposes. If you need a clean account record, turn history off and separately delete the existing entries.
2. Decide whether Web & App Activity is worth the personalization
Web & App Activity is a separate Google account control that can influence personalized experiences in Assistant and other services. Leaving it on can make responses and recommendations more consistent across services; turning it off limits that personalization. Make this a deliberate trade-off rather than assuming that changing Home History also changes Web & App Activity.
3. Review voice and audio improvement sharing
Look for the setting that allows Google to use voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings to improve services. The control and its wording may differ by account. If you do not want eligible samples stored and reviewed for improvement, turn the option off, then revisit the setting after major app or account changes because Google’s Home controls are updated over time.

4. Lower wake-phrase sensitivity when false activations are disruptive
In the Google Home app, open the speaker or display’s device settings and find sensitivity for activation phrases such as Hey Google. Lower sensitivity can reduce unintended activations caused by similar words from television or conversation, but it can also make intentional activation less reliable. Test the setting from the normal speaking position in the room before lowering it further.
5. Understand Google’s advertising boundary
Google states that connected-home video, audio recordings, and home-environment sensor readings are kept separate from advertising and are not used for ad personalization. It also states that the text of voice interactions may inform advertising interests, depending on the account’s settings. Consequently, turning off audio-improvement sharing does not by itself prevent every text-based personalization pathway; review the relevant Google account advertising and activity controls as well.
6. Protect personal results on shared speakers
Use voice match and personal-result controls carefully on a speaker accessible to guests. Disable personal results when the device is in a common area where anyone can ask for calendar entries, reminders, or other account-linked information. A display in a kitchen or hallway deserves stricter settings than a speaker in a private bedroom.

1. Delete Siri History
In the Home app, open the HomePod’s settings, choose Siri History, and tap Delete Siri History. Apple says HomePod stores a history of Siri interactions and may use it to personalize Siri. Repeat the action for each HomePod where the option is presented; deleting history on one device is not a substitute for checking the rest of the home.

- KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.
2. Stop hands-free listening where it is unnecessary
For a temporary pause, say Hey Siri, stop listening. Siri can still be activated by touching and holding the top of HomePod. If a room does not need voice control, disable Siri or Hey Siri for that HomePod in its settings. Apple describes the activation boundary this way: nothing is sent to Apple’s servers until HomePod recognizes “Hey Siri” or “Siri,” or until someone touches and holds the top of the device.
3. Review HomePod Location Services
Open Home app → More → Home Settings and review Location Services. Apple’s HomePod control applies to all HomePod devices in that home, so changing it is a household-wide decision. Location can improve location-aware answers and automations; disabling it reduces that context but may make some location-dependent features less useful.
4. Turn off Improve Siri & Dictation if you do not want sample review
For the Home Organizer, open Home app → HomePod → Accessory Settings → Analytics & Improvements. Turning off Improve Siri & Dictation declines the program that allows Apple to store and review samples of audio, transcripts, and related request data for improving Siri, Dictation, Translate, and related features. Apple’s documentation for this control was updated in 2026, so check the current wording on your devices.
5. Disable Personal Requests on shared speakers
Personal Requests can use messages, contacts, calendars, reminders, notes, and compatible apps on the user’s iPhone or iPad. On a HomePod that guests, children, renters, or visitors can reach, turn Personal Requests off unless the room is genuinely private. This setting is separate from the basic ability to control lights or play music, so disabling it can preserve useful home control without exposing personal content.

| Privacy area | Alexa | Google Home/Nest | Apple HomePod |
|---|---|---|---|
| Activity retained | Voice recordings, transcripts, typed requests, false-wake entries, and third-party smart-home status or usage information can appear in Alexa Privacy. | Home History records assistant and connected-home activity; Web & App Activity is a separate account data stream. | Siri interaction history is stored on HomePod and can be deleted from the Home app. |
| Deletion and retention | Delete individual or bulk voice entries; choose automatic deletion; enable spoken deletion commands. | Delete Home History and choose 3-, 18-, or 36-month automatic deletion, manual deletion, or no automatic deletion; up to 24 hours of retention may occur after history is turned off. | Use Siri History → Delete Siri History; no equivalent cross-platform retention schedule is stated in the cited HomePod documentation. |
| Service-improvement audio | History and personalization controls do not make Alexa local; review the account’s privacy choices. | Separate control covers use of voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings for improvement. | Improve Siri & Dictation governs storage and review of samples, transcripts, and related request data. |
| Advertising | Interest-based advertising controls govern account-linked personalization. | Video, audio recordings, and home sensors are excluded from ad personalization; text of voice interactions may inform interests depending on settings. | Use Apple’s analytics and Siri-improvement controls to limit sample sharing; the HomePod settings described here are not an advertising profile switch. |
| Activation controls | Wake-word indicators show when audio is being streamed; false wakes can be reviewed in history. | Adjust Hey Google sensitivity; lower sensitivity can reduce false wakes but hurt recognition. | Say “stop listening,” disable Siri or Hey Siri, or require a touch-and-hold activation. |
| Personal and location access | Audit skill permissions and routines; remove unnecessary account-linked access. | Disable personal results on shared devices and review Web & App Activity. | Location Services applies to every HomePod in the home; Personal Requests can expose iPhone or iPad data. |
No platform is automatically the most private. The practical outcome depends on whether your household deletes stored activity, limits improvement sharing, controls personal results, and reduces accidental activation.
Quick Recap
A practical privacy routine for a shared home
- Map each device. Record which rooms contain speakers or displays, which account owns each one, and whether guests or children can reach it.
- Remove unnecessary access. Delete unused Alexa skills, disable Google personal results in public rooms, and turn off Apple Personal Requests on shared HomePods.
- Set the shortest useful retention. Choose automatic deletion in Alexa and Google Home, then delete existing history rather than waiting for the timer.
- Limit improvement programs. Turn off Google audio-improvement sharing or Apple Improve Siri & Dictation if sample review is not acceptable for your household.
- Test activation. Speak normally near each device, play television audio, and check whether sensitivity is too high or too low. Keep a physical mute control or unplug option available for rooms that need complete quiet.
- Recheck after updates. App redesigns, operating-system updates, new assistants, and account rollouts can move controls or add new data categories.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Assuming deletion equals no processing: history deletion removes stored records but cannot prevent processing that already occurred. Use mute, disable wake words, or unplug the device when processing must not occur.
- Changing one device instead of the account: Alexa history and Google activity are account-level views, while Apple Location Services can apply to every HomePod in a home. Verify the scope before relying on a change.
- Confusing audio with text: Google’s advertising boundary distinguishes recordings and sensors from text of voice interactions. Review both audio-sharing and account-personalization settings.
- Leaving personal features on in guest areas: calendars, messages, reminders, contacts, notes, and shopping information can be revealed by a casual voice request. Disable personal results or Personal Requests where access is uncontrolled.
- Lowering sensitivity too far: a speaker that never responds is not a privacy success if household members compensate by repeating sensitive requests loudly. Make small changes and test reliability.
