Smart HDR Manager is a free, open-source Windows tray utility that turns HDR on when selected games or HDR video begin, then returns the display to SDR when they end. It can watch games from Steam, Epic, GOG and Xbox, detect genuine HDR playback on YouTube through a Tampermonkey marker, monitor several local video players, and optionally react to NVIDIA RTX Video HDR processing.
What Smart HDR Manager does
Windows HDR can improve supported games and video, but leaving HDR enabled all the time may make ordinary desktop content look dim, washed out or incorrectly toned. Smart HDR Manager automates the display-mode change instead of requiring a trip to Windows Settings for every title.

You select the games that should trigger HDR. When one starts, the utility enables HDR; when the game closes, it switches back to SDR. A per-game startup delay is available for titles that flicker, crash or behave badly if HDR changes during launch.

Supported game and video triggers
Games from major PC libraries
The utility can scan for games associated with Steam, Epic, GOG and Xbox. You then choose which installed titles are allowed to switch HDR. This is a selected-app system rather than an unconditional rule that enables HDR for every game.
YouTube HDR playback
A Tampermonkey script marks a browser tab only while a real HDR stream is playing on YouTube. Smart HDR Manager uses that marker as the trigger, so merely opening a video page does not automatically force HDR. When HDR playback ends, the display can return to SDR.
Local video players
The video workflow supports HDR playback in VLC, mpv, MPC-HC and PotPlayer. An optional setting can restrict switching to the monitor on which the video is displayed, which is useful when another screen should remain in its current mode.

NVIDIA RTX Video HDR
Smart HDR Manager can optionally respond to RTX Video HDR, NVIDIA’s feature for processing SDR video into an HDR presentation. This mode requires compatible NVIDIA hardware and the relevant driver and feature configuration. Support for every RTX generation or driver version is not established, so treat compatibility as hardware- and configuration-dependent.
How automatic switching works
- Install the beta utility from its project release page and review the README for current prerequisites.
- Open the tray application and select the games that should enable HDR.
- For a game that misbehaves during startup, assign a startup delay rather than switching HDR immediately at process launch.
- Install and configure the Tampermonkey script if YouTube HDR detection is needed.
- Enable the local-player or RTX Video HDR options only for the playback workflows you use.
- Choose the target monitor when using per-monitor video switching, then test one game and one video before relying on unattended switching.
The app is designed to switch back to SDR after the trigger disappears. It also includes a Chrome dimness fix for cases where browser content looks wrong after a mode change.
Manual controls and automation
Automatic detection is optional. The tray menu provides direct control, and an override hotkey lets you force a mode while troubleshooting or temporarily ignoring automation. Stream Deck users can call command-line switches:

Requirements, testing and important limits
HDR-capable display hardware
You need an HDR-capable monitor or television connected to the Windows PC. Software can change Windows’ HDR state, but it cannot make an SDR-only panel display true HDR.
What the developer tested
The developer reports testing on Windows 11 25H2 with an NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti and one HDR monitor. Windows 10, AMD graphics, Intel graphics and multi-monitor configurations were described as untested. Those environments may work, but they should be treated as unverified rather than supported guarantees.

Unsigned executable warning
Windows SmartScreen may warn because the executable is unsigned. The release notes provide VirusTotal links for an additional scan. Verify that you obtained the file from the project’s official release location and review the current release notes before bypassing the warning.
Beta behavior
As beta software, detection can fail when a launcher keeps a process open, a player changes rendering mode, a browser tab loses the HDR marker, or a game uses an unusual executable. Keep the tray and hotkey controls available so you can recover manually.

How it compares with other automatic HDR tools
Existing utilities take different approaches. HDR-Auto documents game launch and exit toggling using a curated executable list. HDR Controller documents app selection per monitor, automatic startup with Windows and control by external applications. Smart HDR Manager’s distinguishing scope is its combination of selected games, YouTube HDR detection, local-player support, optional RTX Video HDR handling and manual command-line controls.

Practical troubleshooting
HDR does not switch when a game starts
- Confirm the executable is selected in Smart HDR Manager rather than merely installed in a supported launcher.
- Check that Windows recognizes the connected display as HDR-capable.
- Try a startup delay if the launcher replaces the initial process or the game changes mode during boot.
- Use the tray override to determine whether Windows can switch HDR manually.
The desktop looks dim after YouTube playback
- Verify that the Tampermonkey marker is installed and that the video is actually an HDR stream.
- Allow playback to end or use
--force-sdrto restore SDR. - Enable the included Chrome dimness fix if browser content remains incorrectly toned.
A second monitor changes unexpectedly
Enable the video option that limits switching to the monitor showing the content. Multi-monitor operation is not among the developer’s reported test configurations, so validate the behavior with your exact GPU and display arrangement.
Who should use it?
Smart HDR Manager is a good fit for Windows 11 users with an HDR display who regularly alternate between HDR games or video and SDR desktop work. It is especially useful if you use several launchers, watch YouTube HDR, or play local files in one of the supported players. Users on Windows 10, AMD or Intel graphics, or multi-monitor systems should consider it experimental until they confirm reliable behavior on their own setup.
