Smart glasses are useful today when you treat them as phone-connected headphones and cameras in a normal-looking frame. Current camera-equipped models can handle calls, messages, open-ear audio, first-person photos and video, voice assistants and some translation. Camera-free versions keep calls, music and assistant features while reducing privacy concerns. Captions, turn-by-turn overlays and richer visual AI are emerging, but many demonstrations are prototypes or limited by country, model and software version.
What smart glasses can do right now
The practical baseline is a Bluetooth connection to your phone and a companion app. The glasses use built-in microphones and speakers for hands-free calls, music, notifications and voice commands. Camera models add point-of-view photos and video; some software can identify objects, answer questions about what the camera sees or translate speech. Your phone still supplies much of the processing, connectivity and app access.

Ray-Ban Meta glasses are the clearest example of this category. The current product information lists a 12 MP camera, open-ear audio, calls, messaging and voice AI. A US product page for the listed model quotes up to five hours of continuous audio and 5.5 hours of continuous phone calls. Those figures describe that model and use pattern, not a universal battery rating for every smart-glasses product.

Calls, messages and music
Open-ear speakers let you hear a caller or playlist without sealing your ears. You can normally start a call, send or hear messages and control playback with voice commands or frame controls. Sound leakage is possible, especially at high volume, so people nearby may hear parts of a conversation or song. Call clarity depends on microphone placement, wind and the phone connection.

Hands-free photos and video
A camera frame is convenient for a quick first-person clip, a recipe step or a walk you do not want to film with a phone held out. Resolution, stabilization, recording time and social-app integration vary by model. Meta announced 3K Ultra HD video recording for its 2026 Audio and styles line; check the exact model before assuming that mode is available on every frame.
Voice AI and translation
Voice assistants can answer spoken questions, set reminders, describe some visible subjects and perform phone-linked actions. Translation is not a single universal feature: supported languages, offline behavior, account requirements and availability depend on the glasses, companion software and region. A feature shown in a product demonstration may not be enabled on your account.

Camera versus camera-free glasses
The biggest buying decision is whether you want a camera on your face. Camera-equipped frames offer visual capture and camera-based AI, but they require clear social signals and careful handling in private spaces.

Meta says every pair of its AI glasses has a white capture LED that blinks when content is being captured for your gallery: “Each pair of our AI glasses has a white light called a capture LED that blinks to signify when content is being captured for your gallery.” Meta also says covering or disabling that LED disables the camera. Do not cover it; instead, pause recording and follow venue rules when privacy matters.

Meta’s September 2026 announcement gives its camera-free Audio model a 43-gram figure. That number applies to the announced model, not to all audio glasses. Camera-free frames can be easier to explain in workplaces, schools and homes, but open-ear microphones still mean conversations are being collected by a connected device.
Are displays and navigation ready?
Display glasses are the category’s futuristic layer. A heads-up display can show captions, translated text or directional prompts without requiring you to look down at a phone. Meta Ray-Ban Display materials describe captions, translation and navigation concepts, but launch geography and rollout timing are volatile. Treat a feature as available only when the retailer and companion app list your country and exact model.

Google’s Android XR work illustrates the direction rather than a universal product. Google describes glasses with a camera, microphones and speakers working with a phone so users can access apps without reaching into a pocket. Its demonstrations include Gemini responses, live translation and navigation. Demonstrations and developer previews should not be treated as proof that a purchasable pair supports those functions in your region.

Choose camera-equipped audio glasses if you want
- Hands-free calls and messages while walking, commuting or working.
- Open-ear music and podcasts without in-ear earbuds.
- Occasional first-person photos or video.
- Voice AI that can use a phone connection, with translation where your model and region support it.
For this use case, a current Ray-Ban Meta model is the practical starting point. Confirm the frame style, camera specification, battery estimate and software region before buying.

Choose camera-free audio glasses if you want
- Calls, music and assistant access without a visible camera.
- A simpler privacy conversation in offices, classrooms or homes.
- Ordinary-looking frames where recording would be inappropriate.
You will be giving up visual capture and camera-based AI. The 43-gram figure announced for Meta’s 2026 Audio model is a useful reference for that product, not a category standard.
Wait for or carefully evaluate display glasses if you want
- Persistent captions for conversations.
- On-screen translation rather than audio-only translation.
- Visual turn-by-turn directions.
Ask the seller for the exact display model, supported countries, phone operating-system requirements, prescription-lens availability and expected battery life. A prototype or platform announcement is not a retail guarantee.
Setup and privacy checklist
- Install the manufacturer’s companion app and sign in with the required account.
- Pair the glasses with your phone over Bluetooth, then grant only the microphone, camera, contacts and notification permissions you actually need.
- Update the glasses firmware and app before testing calls, messaging, translation or AI; feature menus can change with software and region.
- Learn the physical controls and voice wake phrase, and test a call outdoors where wind exposes microphone limits.
- Explain the capture LED to people nearby. Stop recording in changing rooms, medical settings, private meetings and any venue that bans cameras.
- Check charging behavior and carry the case on long days; published battery figures are usually continuous-use estimates, not a promise of mixed daily endurance.
Fit, compatibility and ownership details that matter
Check compatibility with your phone’s operating system and the required account ecosystem. Prescription support, lens availability, nose-pad adjustment, temple pressure, water resistance and total weight differ by frame and size. Try the glasses with your prescription if possible; a comfortable audio frame can become tiring when its temples press against the head or the bridge slips during speech.
Translation languages, navigation coverage and AI tools can be restricted by country, account age, network access or staged software rollout. Retail price, stock and included charging hardware also change, so verify those details on the current listing for your region rather than relying on an older review.
The practical answer
Buy today for calls, messages, open-ear audio, quick camera capture and voice assistance—not for science-fiction overlays. Camera-equipped frames provide the broadest feature set, with the capture LED as an essential privacy safeguard. Camera-free audio frames are the better fit when recording is unacceptable. Displays, live visual translation and hands-free navigation are promising, but they remain model- and region-dependent rather than guaranteed capabilities of smart glasses as a whole.
