A pair of black-capped chickadees turned the Birdfy Nest Duo into a nest, and WIRED commerce editor Kat Merck watched the season unfold from inside and outside the box. The two-camera view captured excavation, eggs, hatchlings and fledging—but missed some events, while heat and an unexpected floor detail complicated the experience. Her account is a useful look at what a smart birdhouse can show, and what one season cannot prove.
From an unoccupied box to a chickadee nest
Merck installed the Nest Duo on the West Coast in March, using a pole stand and the box’s 1-inch entrance. Chickadees visited repeatedly but did not settle at first. She suspected they were reacting to the visible perforations in the adjustable metal floor tray. After covering the holes with a piece of moss mat, she saw a chickadee begin excavating within hours.

That was an improvised change, not a controlled test or an approved product instruction. Merck also noted a possible trade-off: if the box leaked, the mat could impede drainage. The episode shows how a detail that seems minor to a human can become part of the experience of using a nest box, but it does not establish why the birds chose it.
In her account, excavation took about four to five days. The birds then gathered moss for roughly a week, followed by fur. The interior camera made this construction phase visible in a way an exterior-only view could not.

What the cameras showed—and what they missed
The Nest Duo’s interior and exterior cameras gave Merck views of activity inside the cavity and at the entrance. She watched the mother lay seven eggs; all seven hatched, but only four young remained at fledging. She observed the mother carry one apparently living chick out of the nest. The footage did not establish what happened to the other missing nestlings.
That gap matters: a camera does not turn a nest into a continuously documented scientific record. Merck concluded that the motion sensor failed to record every event. The clips could make behavior easier to observe, but they could not account for every chick or explain what the cameras did not capture.

Merck described shareable 20-second clips with audio and said she could download and share them without a subscription during her season. Birdfy’s current product page describes cloud clips and a 30-day download window after a story ends; storage terms and app behavior can change, so treat her experience as specific to that period rather than a permanent guarantee.

Heat became a practical concern
During a late-May heat wave, the box’s displayed temperature reached about 96°F, according to Merck. She cited 107°F as a potentially fatal temperature for cavity-nesting fledglings; that threshold is a figure in her review, not independently verified guidance here. She responded with ice packs and an umbrella to cool the box, while recognizing that intervention could disturb the birds.

Merck also warned that the black exterior could absorb heat in warmer climates. Her experience is a reason to consider local exposure and the box’s placement before choosing a dark-colored nest box, not a controlled measurement of how hot every Nest Duo will become. The app’s thermometer and hygrometer can provide context, but they do not resolve whether a particular site is suitable or what action is safest for the birds.

Who might find this kind of birdhouse worthwhile
The main appeal is perspective: the inside camera can show nest-building and chick development, while the exterior view adds context at the entrance. Remote control and the included solar panel may reduce routine handling. For a reader interested in observing nesting behavior, Merck’s season shows the potential educational value of following one nest over time.
The same account gives reasons to weigh the setup carefully. The motion sensor missed events, the app frequently mislabeled nesting stages, the dark exterior raised a heat concern, and the birds initially appeared hesitant about the perforated floor. Connectivity was reliable for Merck’s Nest Duo, but her separate experience with persistent connection problems involved the Polygon model she tested; it should not be generalized to every product in Birdfy’s line.
- Consider whether the dual interior-and-exterior view is important to what you want to observe.
- Think through local heat exposure, mounting location and predator protection before installation.
- Check that your Wi-Fi supports 2.4 GHz at the intended location.
- Review current app, clip-storage and download terms rather than assuming they match a past user’s experience.
- Consider that cameras and motion detection can miss activity, and avoid treating recorded footage as a complete account of what happens in a nest.
A compelling season, not a complete record
Merck’s account is compelling because it follows a real nesting attempt from excavation to fledging and shows how much a camera-equipped box can reveal. It is also a single season, not a controlled comparison or a full account of chick survival. The four chicks that remained at fledging, the missing nestlings and the unrecorded events are part of the story, not details the technology can explain away.
