Small satellite launch vehicles explained: how rockets like Skyroot’s Vikram work

Small launch vehicles are rockets built to place relatively light payloads into low Earth orbit (LEO). They trade the raw lifting capacity of a heavy launcher for mission flexibility, simpler ground infrastructure and the possibility of shorter turnaround. Their essential trick is staging: each spent stage separates, so the rocket stops accelerating empty tanks, motors and structures.

What a small satellite launch vehicle is

A small satellite launch vehicle (SSLV in the generic sense) is an orbital rocket optimized for modest payloads rather than for the largest possible mass. It still has to provide the same things as any orbital launcher: controlled acceleration, guidance through the atmosphere, enough final velocity for orbit, and accurate insertion into the customer’s requested altitude and inclination.

The capacity figure alone does not define a useful launch. A provider may advertise a maximum mass to LEO, but the mission still depends on the orbit, launch date, payload dimensions, separation conditions, integration schedule and whether the customer wants a dedicated flight or a shared ride. A 350 kg dedicated mission and a 500 kg mission to a particular 500 km orbit are therefore different services, not interchangeable numbers.

How the rocket reaches orbit

1. Vertical ascent and guided flight

The vehicle leaves the pad vertically to clear nearby structures and dense lower-atmosphere air. Guidance then gradually bends the flight path toward the horizontal direction needed for orbit. The rocket’s computers continuously combine navigation measurements with a planned trajectory, commanding steering while the engines burn.

2. Staging removes dead weight

A rocket’s tanks, engines, insulation and structural frames become useless after their propellant is consumed. Carrying that empty hardware would force later stages to accelerate mass that no longer contributes thrust. In a staged launcher, pyrotechnic or mechanical systems separate the exhausted section; the next stage then burns with a better mass ratio. Repeating this process is what makes orbital flight practical for a relatively small vehicle.

3. Solid and liquid propulsion serve different jobs

Solid motors package propellant and engine hardware in a compact, storable form. They can deliver high thrust without the pumps, valves and tanks required by a liquid engine, making them attractive for early high-energy stages. Their main operational limitation is that, once ignited, thrust usually cannot be throttled or shut down with the same freedom as a liquid engine.

Liquid stages add controllability. A liquid upper or terminal stage can steer precisely, change its burn duration and, if designed for it, shut down and restart. Those capabilities matter after the atmosphere, when small velocity errors translate into significant differences in orbital altitude, inclination or deployment timing.

4. The final burn sets the orbit

After the lower stages have supplied most of the energy, the upper stage performs the precise work of orbit insertion. It may coast before firing, then burn at a calculated point to circularize the orbit or adjust its apogee. For a mission carrying several spacecraft, the stage can use separate burns and timed separations so that each payload reaches its assigned condition.

How many stages does Vikram-I have?

ISRO reports that Skyroot’s Vikram-I is a four-stage rocket: three solid stages followed by a liquid fourth stage powered by the Raman-I engine. Skyroot describes the launcher as an all-carbon-composite vehicle with a restartable liquid upper stage. The spelling “Vikram-1” also appears on Skyroot’s launch-services material; both references describe this four-stage vehicle.

First three stages: solid propulsion

The three solid stages provide the bulk of the ascent thrust. Their job is to accelerate the vehicle through the early and middle portions of flight, then separate after their propellant is expended. Discarding each empty motor case keeps the remaining stack lighter for the next burn.

Fourth stage: Raman-I liquid upper stage

The liquid fourth stage is the precision element. Its engine can be managed for the final injection sequence rather than simply delivering one fixed impulse. Skyroot’s restartable design allows the stage to perform more than one controlled burn, with a coast period between burns when the mission requires it.

What “restartable” changes

A non-restartable upper stage generally completes its burn in one continuous event. A restartable stage can:

  • burn, coast and burn again to refine the final orbit;
  • support multiple deployment opportunities during one mission;
  • reduce the need to accept one compromise orbit for every payload on a shared flight; and
  • provide more precise control over the timing and conditions of satellite separation.

Restartability does not mean that every orbit is available on every flight. The vehicle must still have the propellant margin, thermal control, guidance plan and payload separation hardware for the requested sequence.

Vikram-I capacity and launch options

Skyroot advertises up to 350 kg to LEO for Vikram-I. Its launch-services page also lists rideshare slots for payloads up to 50 kg per slot. Those are provider-published capacity limits, not a guarantee that a particular payload, orbit or date will be accepted.

Vikram-I service Published payload figure What it means
Dedicated mission Up to 350 kg to LEO The customer books the vehicle for its own mission, subject to orbit, integration and availability.
Rideshare slot Up to 50 kg per slot The payload shares a flight with other spacecraft and must fit the mission’s common deployment plan.

Skyroot says it offers access from India to low-to-mid inclinations. The practical inclination and altitude options depend on the launch site, trajectory and mission analysis; the headline payload number should not be read as applying identically to every orbit.

Vikram-I’s demonstrated orbital milestone

According to ISRO’s official report, Vikram-I lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 12:05:30 PM on July 18, 2026. ISRO described the flight as the first orbital launch from Indian soil by a private Indian company. SCOPE and Grahaa were injected into LEO, while additional payloads supported in-orbit experiments.

That flight record establishes an orbital demonstration, but it does not by itself establish a guaranteed launch cadence, a universal success rate or availability for every customer. Those commercial conditions must be confirmed for the specific mission.

How ISRO’s SSLV differs

ISRO’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) is a separate launcher with a larger published single-satellite capacity. ISRO specifies a vehicle about 34 m long, 2 m in diameter and approximately 120 tonnes at liftoff. Its three main stages use HTPB solid propellant. A liquid Velocity Trimming Module (VTM) provides terminal velocity adjustment and reaction control.

The VTM configuration

ISRO lists eight 50 N thrusters for reaction control and eight 50 N axial thrusters for adding velocity. Unlike the large solid stages, this liquid module handles fine corrections and the final part of the insertion sequence.

Published SSLV payload modes

SSLV mode Published capability Target orbit specified by ISRO
Single satellite Up to 500 kg 500 km planar orbit
Multiple satellites From 10 kg to 300 kg total payload range stated for the mode 500 km planar orbit

These figures describe the published modes, not an automatic promise for every spacecraft. Payload adapters, separation systems, safety reviews and trajectory constraints can reduce the usable mass for a particular mission.

SSLV flight and hardware updates

SSLV-D2 successfully placed EOS-07, Janus-1 and AzaadiSAT-2 into a 450 km circular orbit on February 10, 2023. ISRO characterizes SSLV as low-cost, quick-turnaround, flexible for multiple satellites and suitable for launch-on-demand commercialization.

On December 30, 2025, ISRO static-tested an improved SS3 stage. The carbon-epoxy motor case reduced stage mass; ISRO reported a 90 kg improvement in SSLV payload performance. The 108-second test recorded about 233 measurements and qualified the stage for flight induction. A static test is a ground qualification event, so the reported improvement should not be confused with a completed orbital mission.

Vikram-I versus SSLV: the decision factors

Decision axis Vikram-I ISRO SSLV
Published maximum payload Up to 350 kg to LEO Up to 500 kg to a 500 km planar orbit
Shared-flight offer Rideshare slots up to 50 kg per slot Multiple-satellite mode stated as 10–300 kg for the specified orbit
Stage architecture Three solid stages plus a liquid fourth stage using Raman-I Three HTPB solid stages plus liquid VTM
Fine-control feature Restartable liquid upper stage VTM with eight 50 N reaction-control and eight 50 N axial thrusters
Published dimensions and liftoff mass Not stated in the cited launch-services information Approximately 34 m long, 2 m diameter and 120 t at liftoff
Demonstrated result cited here Orbital launch from India on July 18, 2026 SSLV-D2 reached a 450 km circular orbit on February 10, 2023
Turnaround, price and guaranteed availability Not stated as a guaranteed value ISRO describes low cost and low turnaround time; a mission-specific offer is required

Choose between them by starting with the orbit, not the headline capacity. A customer needing a dedicated 350 kg-class flight, a particular inclination and independent deployment control may value Vikram-I’s service model and restartable upper stage. A customer whose spacecraft fits the published 500 km planar-orbit mode may find SSLV’s higher stated capacity more suitable. Schedule, integration rules and an available launch slot can outweigh either comparison.

Can small rockets launch satellites on demand?

“On demand” means a provider is designed to accept missions with less dependence on a large launcher’s fixed manifest; it does not mean an instant launch. The vehicle, launch site, range, payload safety review and spacecraft all still require preparation.

ISRO uses the phrases “low cost,” “low turn-around time,” “flexibility in accommodating multiple satellites,” “Launch on demand feasibility” and “minimal launch infrastructure requirements” when describing SSLV. Skyroot presents Vikram as a service intended to take customers to a precise destination when they need a ride. These descriptions express the operating model; they do not publish a universal lead time.

Skyroot’s stated commercial process

Skyroot lists a sequence for prospective Vikram-1 customers:

  1. Sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
  2. Provide mission details, after which the company prepares a quotation.
  3. Discuss the mission with the launch provider and resolve technical requirements.
  4. Execute a Launch Service Agreement.

The same material says the 2026 manifest is filling. It does not publish launch prices or a commission program. A customer should request a written quotation and verify the available slot, target orbit, mass limit, payload interface, insurance responsibilities and schedule before treating a capacity figure as a booking.

What a customer must define before choosing a vehicle

  • Payload mass and dimensions: include the spacecraft, adapter and any deployment hardware counted by the provider.
  • Orbit: specify altitude, inclination, circularity and any phasing or separation requirements.
  • Deployment plan: state whether the satellite needs a dedicated flight, a rideshare slot or a particular separation time.
  • Schedule: distinguish a published manifest statement from a contracted launch date.
  • Integration constraints: confirm vibration, shock, electrical, contamination, fueling and safety requirements.
  • Mission control needs: ask whether the upper-stage burn and restart sequence supports the desired deployment geometry.

Common misconceptions and failure points

“A 350 kg rocket can carry 350 kg to any orbit.”

No. The 350 kg figure is Skyroot’s advertised maximum to LEO. A different altitude, inclination or deployment profile can change the allowable mass.

“A restartable stage can fly anywhere.”

Restarting improves mission flexibility and precision, but it consumes propellant and requires a validated guidance and thermal-control sequence. It expands the set of feasible profiles; it does not remove trajectory limits.

“Rideshare is the same as a dedicated launch.”

A rideshare customer accepts a shared schedule and common deployment plan. A dedicated customer pays for control of the mission profile, subject to the provider’s own constraints.

“A successful test proves commercial reliability.”

A static-fire test validates hardware under ground conditions, and an orbital flight demonstrates that a particular mission reached space. Neither fact alone supplies a guaranteed future success rate or launch date. Those commitments belong in the mission contract.

Bottom line for satellite operators

Small launch vehicles work by combining aggressive mass reduction, multiple stages and a controllable final insertion burn. Vikram-I uses three solid stages and a restartable liquid Raman-I fourth stage, with Skyroot advertising up to 350 kg to LEO or rideshare slots up to 50 kg. ISRO’s SSLV uses three HTPB solid stages and a liquid VTM, with a published capability of up to 500 kg to a 500 km planar orbit. The right choice follows from the required orbit, payload, deployment control, schedule and confirmed availability—not from the maximum number in a brochure.
