What the three options mean
Dedicated small launch
A dedicated small launch carries your mission as the launch customer’s principal payload, giving you more influence over launch design and orbital insertion than a secondary payload normally receives. That influence remains subject to the vehicle’s performance, available trajectories, safety rules, contract, and the provider’s current manifest.
NASA’s Venture-Class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare (VADR) program procures both dedicated and rideshare services for risk-tolerant CubeSat through Class D missions. NASA describes VADR as using less agency oversight and more commercial flexibility to target lower costs for those missions. VADR’s procurement model should not be treated as a guarantee of availability, price, or suitability for every commercial customer.

A dedicated mission is often considered when the payload needs a specific altitude or inclination, a precise injection, an interplanetary or other nonstandard trajectory, a tightly timed rendezvous, most of the vehicle’s available performance, or environmental conditions that a shared mission cannot provide. NASA’s 2024 small-spacecraft report identifies these as cases in which dedicated launch may be the best method. You still have to match each requirement to a current vehicle and contract; “dedicated” does not mean every small launcher can supply every orbit or environment.
Rideshare
A rideshare secondary payload shares a launch procured primarily for another spacecraft. NASA’s Rideshare 101 guide states that “The primary spacecraft, or payload, is the spacecraft for which the launch service is initially procured.” The primary mission normally establishes the launch date, launch time, inclination, destination, flight design, and insertion accuracy.
Your spacecraft may receive a lower-cost opportunity by using excess launch capacity, but it is subordinate to the primary mission’s requirements. Without an explicit agreement, a secondary payload does not drive orbit selection, flight design, or the primary mission’s integration path. Rideshare arrangements are not fully standardized across the space community, so the word itself is not a complete description of your rights or obligations.

A hosted payload is integrated with a host spacecraft and continues to use one or more host-provided resources in orbit. NASA Policy Directive 8610.12H gives examples including physical volume and mass accommodation, power, communications, thermal management, data processing, and operations. The host generally leads the transportation-service agreement; the payload customer may still pay integration and marginal operations costs.
Unlike a rideshare spacecraft that is deployed and then operates independently, a hosted payload is usually attached permanently or for the planned mission duration. NASA distinguishes hosted payloads from small satellites deployed as secondary payloads in its rideshare guidance.
Hosted orbital services can include integration and testing, launch accommodation, commissioning, on-orbit operations, and data return. NASA’s Small Spacecraft Technology State of the Art survey, identified as a market snapshot as of January 2026, describes dedicated spacecraft, shared hosted capacity, multi-payload missions, and virtual or software-only hosting. Offerings evolve rapidly, so a provider’s current payload guide and contract scope matter more than a generic service label.
How to choose: answer these questions in order
1. What orbit and trajectory are actually required?
Write the requirement in engineering terms before speaking with providers:

- Target altitude and allowable altitude range.
- Inclination and allowable inclination range.
- Destination, including any transfer orbit, cislunar or interplanetary trajectory, or rendezvous profile.
- Injection accuracy, phasing, and separation conditions.
- Required launch window and any date-specific celestial or operational event.
Compare that requirement with the orbit a rideshare mission actually offers, not with an advertised destination category. If the offered orbit fails a mission-critical condition, investigate a dedicated launch or a hosted platform that can provide the required placement. A hosted payload usually inherits the host’s orbital plan, so hosting is not automatically an alternative to dedicated control.
2. How much launch-date flexibility is available?
A rideshare secondary payload normally waits for the primary mission’s schedule. The launch date can move with the primary’s readiness, range availability, vehicle issues, or other manifest decisions. A hosted payload also typically does not determine the host’s launch date or orbital placement.
Define the cost of waiting: expiring hardware, a seasonal observation opportunity, a regulatory deadline, a coordinated experiment, a dependent spacecraft, or staff and facility commitments. If missing a narrow window would materially damage the mission, the value of schedule control may justify a dedicated mission even when a rideshare quote appears lower.
3. How independent must the spacecraft be?
A deployed rideshare spacecraft generally becomes its own spacecraft after separation. Your team supplies the bus, flight software, ground segment, command authority, and routine operations, subject to launch-provider and primary-mission requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
A hosted payload depends on the host for the resources specified in the agreement. That dependency may include mounting, electrical power, thermal control, communications, processing, attitude knowledge or pointing support, command routing, and operations. Such dependence can remove work from your team, but it also creates interfaces and operational constraints that must be accepted and documented.
4. What does the team want to own and operate?
Buying or supplying a spacecraft bus can provide greater tailoring and operational control. NASA’s hosted-services comparison notes that this approach requires more integration effort. A hosted service can shift integration, commissioning, routine operations, and data delivery to the provider, allowing investigators to focus on payload development and data processing.
Decide who will perform each function: mechanical and electrical integration, environmental testing, launch-site processing, commissioning, fault response, command approval, data calibration, storage, downlink, and end-of-life activity. Ambiguity at this stage often creates more risk than the launch vehicle choice itself.

5. Does the payload fit the offered envelope?
Mass and volume are only the first checks. Request a mission-specific interface control document and compare at least the following:
- Mass, dimensions, mounting pattern, keep-out zones, center of gravity, and moments of inertia.
- Average and peak power, voltage ranges, inrush current, grounding, and switching behavior.
- Thermal dissipation, allowable temperature limits, conductive and radiative paths, and heater requirements.
- Data interfaces, throughput, storage, latency, downlink allocation, and data-return responsibility.
- Pointing knowledge, pointing stability, line-of-sight restrictions, vibration sensitivity, and observation timing.
- Environmental limits for vibration, shock, acoustic exposure, radiation, contamination, and electromagnetic compatibility.
- Command, telemetry, fault protection, inhibits, safe modes, and access-control boundaries.
NASA’s small-spacecraft survey emphasizes that hosted and spacecraft services differ in their electrical, thermal, data, pointing, and interface constraints. A payload that fits physically can still be incompatible electrically, thermally, operationally, or in data volume.
6. What is the complete mission cost and risk?
Do not compare only the launch or hosting line item. Build a cost and risk model that includes:
- Launch or hosting service charges and optional services.
- Payload-specific integration, analysis, testing, qualification, and documentation.
- Licensing, spectrum coordination, export or national-security reviews where applicable, and insurance obligations.
- Ground stations, command and control, cybersecurity, data processing, storage, calibration, and delivery.
- Commissioning, routine operations, anomaly response, and end-of-life work.
- Schedule reserve, rework, storage, and the consequences of missing a launch opportunity.
- Technical and organizational dependencies on the primary mission, host spacecraft, or provider.
NASA’s policy cost-effectiveness assessment considers unique mission requirements, technical risk, schedule needs, interdependencies, prior investments, and transportation cost. The available NASA guidance does not publish a directly comparable current total price, schedule, or mission-success figure for all three options. Obtain current, scope-matched quotes rather than applying a universal ranking.
At-a-glance comparison
| Decision axis | Dedicated small launch | Rideshare | Hosted payload |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orbit and timing control | Best candidate when dedicated control is required, subject to vehicle and contract capability. | Usually accepts the primary mission’s orbit and schedule. | Host typically determines launch schedule and orbital placement. |
| Spacecraft independence | Mission generally supplies and operates its own spacecraft. | Secondary spacecraft is typically independent after deployment, but launch and orbit remain subordinate. | Payload depends on host-provided resources defined in the agreement. |
| Integration and operations | Mission arranges spacecraft, launch, and operational integration. | Mission prepares a secondary payload to provider and primary-mission requirements. | Provider may perform integration, commissioning, operations, and data return. |
| Control and tailoring | Potentially the greatest launch tailoring; confirm the vehicle’s actual capability. | Limited by the available rideshare orbit, interface, and manifest terms. | Less control than owning a bus, exchanged for host resources and support. |
| Cost basis | Requires a mission-specific launch and integration quote. | Uses shared capacity, but integration, schedule, and mission-support costs remain. | Includes hosting and potentially recurring resource, operations, and data-delivery charges. |
What each choice requires from your team
Dedicated launch: control with more responsibility
Prepare a complete spacecraft and launch-integration plan. Your team must define the target orbit, separation conditions, trajectory, launch window, spacecraft qualification approach, ground operations, licensing, and post-launch operations. The provider’s vehicle performance and contract still bound the result, so require written confirmation of achievable orbit, injection accuracy, payload environment, schedule assumptions, and contingency handling.

Model two timelines: the provider’s published target and the date range your program can truly tolerate. Include the possibility that the primary mission changes. Confirm what happens if your spacecraft misses an integration milestone, fails a test, or becomes incompatible with a revised primary configuration.
Hosted payload: fewer spacecraft functions, tighter service interfaces
Define exactly which host resources are included. “Hosted” might cover mounting and power but not payload operations, data processing, calibration, or a guaranteed downlink volume. It might include commissioning but charge separately for routine operations or special commanding.
Specify authority and access in the agreement: who can command the payload, who approves procedures, how anomalies are escalated, what telemetry is retained, how quickly data is delivered, what happens during host safe mode, and how the payload is removed or disabled at end of life. Confirm host attitude, pointing availability, thermal conditions, electromagnetic compatibility, and resource margins over the mission duration.

- Freeze the mission’s non-negotiables. Record orbit, trajectory, injection accuracy, launch window, pointing, data, power, thermal, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Separate must-haves from preferences. Mark each requirement as mission-critical, negotiable, or a performance objective. This prevents a low price from masking an impossible orbit or schedule.
- Request the real interface documents. Ask each candidate for the current payload guide, interface control document, environmental profile, integration milestones, operations concept, data policy, and contract assumptions.
- Build three scope-matched architectures. For a dedicated launch, include your complete spacecraft and launch integration. For rideshare, use the specific primary mission’s orbit and schedule. For hosting, include every host resource and every function your team retains.
- Map dependencies and failure consequences. Identify what changes if the primary slips, the host enters safe mode, the offered orbit changes, a resource margin disappears, or your payload misses an integration milestone.
- Price the full lifecycle. Include engineering, testing, licensing, ground systems, commissioning, operations, data return, reserves, and the cost of a missed opportunity.
- Score fit before price. Eliminate options that fail a non-negotiable requirement. Only then compare cost, schedule confidence, control, workload, and residual risk.
- Put assumptions in the contract. Capture orbit, injection accuracy, launch window, resource allocations, interfaces, data rights, operational authority, remedies, and change-control rules.
Common failure modes and how to prevent them
Choosing by advertised price alone
A shared launch price may exclude spacecraft integration, testing, licensing, ground support, operations, data delivery, and schedule reserves. A hosted-service price may exclude payload-specific engineering or recurring resource charges. Compare equivalent scopes and lifecycle costs.
Assuming “rideshare” means a standard orbit
Rideshare definitions and interfaces vary. The primary mission controls the principal launch requirements, and your separation orbit may differ from a marketing description. Require the actual mission profile and insertion tolerances.
Treating hosted payload as a free spacecraft bus
Hosting can reduce bus development and operations work, but it introduces dependence on host power, thermal, communications, attitude, processing, and availability. Confirm every resource, margin, service level, and safe-mode behavior.

Power transients, thermal rejection, electromagnetic compatibility, pointing stability, data throughput, contamination, vibration, and command boundaries can each disqualify an otherwise physically compatible payload. Complete the full envelope review before committing to a launch slot.
Best Value
Ignoring schedule dependency
A rideshare payload is subordinate to the primary mission, and a hosted payload generally follows the host’s launch and orbital plan. Quantify the effect of delay and maintain a credible fallback if the opportunity is date-sensitive.
Confusing a provider list with a recommendation
NASA’s Flight Opportunities overview lists examples of contracted hosted orbital platforms, including Astro Digital, Loft Federal, Momentus, Rocket Lab, SpaceX, Spire, Tyvak, and Varda. That list is an entry point for discovery, not evidence that the providers are interchangeable or suitable for your payload. Check each provider’s current payload guide, availability, technical scope, and contract terms.
Mission patterns that clarify the choice
Specific orbit or narrow event window
If an experiment requires a particular inclination, transfer trajectory, injection accuracy, or rendezvous date, begin with dedicated-launch feasibility. A rideshare is viable only if a specific primary mission already provides the required conditions and schedule. Hosting helps only when a host can supply the needed orbit and timing while meeting the payload’s resource requirements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Flexible technology demonstration
If the payload can operate in the orbit and launch window offered by a known mission, rideshare can be appropriate. The team must still budget integration, testing, ground operations, and the possibility of primary-mission delay.
Instrument-focused mission with limited spacecraft operations staff
Hosting may fit when the payload can use the host’s power, communications, thermal control, processing, and operational services. The trade is less independent control and a need to define data, commanding, pointing, anomaly, and safe-mode responsibilities precisely.
Mission requiring a tailored bus and long-term independent operations
A dedicated launch paired with a mission-owned spacecraft generally offers the most tailoring and autonomy, provided the vehicle can deliver the required orbit and environment. It also places the integration, licensing, operations, and lifecycle workload on your organization.
Questions to put in a provider request
- What exact orbit, inclination, injection accuracy, separation conditions, and launch-window assumptions are contractual?
- Which requirements are controlled by the primary mission or host, and what change-notification period applies?
- What mass, volume, center-of-gravity, power, thermal, data, pointing, electromagnetic, vibration, shock, and contamination limits apply?
- Which integration analyses, tests, documentation, licensing tasks, and launch-site activities are included?
- Who commands the payload, operates it after commissioning, handles anomalies, and pays for special operations?
- What communications, storage, downlink, processing, calibration, and data-delivery performance is committed?
- What happens if the launch slips, the primary mission changes, the host enters safe mode, or the payload misses a milestone?
- Which costs recur for operations, data, resources, or changes, and which are one-time?
- What current mission references demonstrate compatibility with the payload’s technical envelope?
Bottom line: match control to the requirement
Select a dedicated small launch when orbit, trajectory, timing, or environmental control is mission-critical and shared opportunities cannot satisfy it. Select a rideshare when the payload can accept the primary mission’s orbit, schedule, separation conditions, and integration rules. Select a hosted payload when using host resources and provider-led integration or operations is more valuable than owning and controlling an independent spacecraft.
