Slovenia’s .si Domains Surged by 20,000 in a Day After Trump’s AI Terminology Order

Slovenia’s .si domain registry recorded 20,276 new web addresses in the 24 hours to Monday afternoon, October 5, 2026, according to The Next Web. The spike followed President Donald Trump’s push to call artificial intelligence “Super Intelligence,” but the U.S. order changes terminology for specified federal communications—not the name of AI worldwide, and not the meaning of Slovenia’s country-code domain.

What happened to Slovenia’s .si domain count?

The Next Web reported that Register.si’s live counter showed 20,276 additions in the 24 hours to Monday afternoon, October 5. The same snapshot showed 46,066 new domains in the previous month and 298,682 .si domains in total. These are dated counter readings, not current totals.

The increase had been building through late September. The Next Web, citing Register.si spokeswoman Klara Herman, reported 11,000 new .si domains on September 30. It also said August had fewer than 2,000 additions.

Netcraft reported a separate sequence based on its own internet survey. It counted 4,794 registrations in the 24 hours after Trump’s September 22 remarks at the UN General Assembly, then 13,603 in the 24 hours to October 1. By October 1, Netcraft said the total .si count had risen 21.6% over eight days, and that September registrations were about 13 times August’s. These figures are not the same measurement as Register.si’s counter: Netcraft says .si is not obliged to publish zone files, so its hourly estimates come from its own survey of the internet.

What did Trump change about the term “AI”?

On September 29, 2026, Trump signed Executive Order 14434, “Inaugurating The Era Of Super Intelligence.” Section 2(a) directs executive departments and agencies, “To the maximum extent permitted by law,” to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, policy documents and other non-statutory documents within the executive branch. The White House order is a U.S. executive-branch terminology directive. It does not establish a worldwide rename or require other governments, companies or the public to use “SI.”

Why are .si domains surging?

The timing links the rise to Trump’s September 22 UN remarks and the September 29 order: “SI” happens to match Slovenia’s .si country-code top-level domain. But timing does not prove that either announcement caused every registration. Herman called the late-September activity “unprecedented,” while cautioning against attributing the whole increase to Trump, according to The Next Web’s account of her BBC interview.

The available figures also point to speculative buying and resale, rather than a wave of established AI businesses. Netcraft’s October 1 report said just over half of the .si domains it detected as registered at Dynadot between a Truth Social poll and Trump’s UN remarks were listed on Dynadot’s aftermarket. That is a finding about the names in Netcraft’s detected sample and that timeframe, not all .si registrations. Hostinger told TechCrunch, as quoted by The Next Web, that only about 3% of the .si names bought by its customers explicitly referenced AI; that is Hostinger’s customer sample, not a registry-wide breakdown.

Netcraft also identified 87 .com domains pairing well-known brands with “superintelligence,” listed for resale at $20,000 apiece. Those were asking prices, not completed sales; Netcraft said it had not seen evidence that the domains had changed hands. Registering a name—or listing it for resale—is not evidence of a developed project or lasting demand.

Does .si replace .ai?

No. .si remains Slovenia’s country-code domain; its overlap with the initials “Super Intelligence” is a coincidence, not a change in what the domain represents. The order does not make .si an official or universal substitute for .ai. The two extensions can signal different things to an audience: .si is associated with Slovenia, while the recent discussion has made its letters newly topical.

If you have a real site to launch, compare the registration and renewal price, term commitment, registrar support, geographic signal and audience fit for the specific provider you would use. The Next Web reported an October 2026 Hostinger snapshot of about $12 per year for .si and about $90 for .ai with a two-year commitment; those figures are provider-specific and time-bound, not market averages or verified current quotes.

What the early reports do—and do not—show

The sequence of announcements and registration counts supports describing this as a surge that followed the remarks and order. It does not establish that the order alone caused the surge, that most buyers plan to use their domains for AI, or that a new naming convention has taken hold. Herman’s caution, the resale listings and Hostinger’s small share of explicitly AI-related names all argue against treating the spike as proof of durable business demand.

As of its October 1, 2026 report, Netcraft had not detected an increase in malicious content such as phishing connected with the terminology change. That is a dated observation, not a guarantee that any newly registered domain is safe.
