Skyrora is now tentatively aiming to make its first orbital launch in 2030, according to an October 2, 2026 report by Payload. That is a target, not a booked launch or a guaranteed date, and it replaces an earlier optimistic possibility of attempting an orbital flight as soon as Q4 2026.
What Skyrora is developing
The UK launch company is developing Skylark XL, an orbital rocket. Payload reported that Skyrora recently completed a 45-second hotfire of a scaled-down version of the engine intended for the vehicle’s first stage. The test was not a full-scale test of a flight engine, and it does not mean Skylark XL is ready to fly.
Skyrora says the test will inform development of a larger 70 kN engine. COO Jack-James Marlow told Payload that results would support work on the engine interface, firing operations and tank design. These are company-reported specifications and next steps, not independently verified test findings.
The company is also working toward a possible second flight of its suborbital Skylark L2 in the year following Payload’s 2026 report. That is a possibility, not a confirmed launch date. Skyrora’s first Skylark L suborbital flight attempt took place from Iceland in 2022, according to the same report.

Why the orbital timeline has moved
Marlow attributed the slower approach to limited interest in sovereign launch from the UK government and local investors, as well as regulatory constraints and the physical limitations of spaceport locations. He also said Skyrora wants to control operating costs rather than grow rapidly. “Our strategy is not to sprint towards [orbit],” he told Payload, describing a preference for a stable business over a large, long-term gamble.
Payload said Skyrora intends to fund development largely through revenue and grants. Potential revenue sources it reported include selling components developed in-house to the wider space industry, renting test facilities to UK researchers and offering 3D-printing machines for prototypes in other industries. These are reported plans, not confirmation of secured funding or established revenue streams.

Payload attributed approximately $65.9 million in venture-capital financing raised since Skyrora’s 2017 founding to PitchBook. It also reported that officials expect the company to need roughly twice that amount to reach orbit. Those are reported estimates, not audited financial disclosures.
What the launch licence does—and does not—cover
Payload reported that Skyrora received a launch licence in August 2025 but remains constrained at SaxaVord, including by launch-pad availability. The scope matters: a Viasat announcement dated October 1, 2025 specifies that the UK Civil Aviation Authority licence covered launch and operation of the suborbital Skylark L from SaxaVord. It is not confirmation of an orbital vehicle licence.

That Viasat announcement concerned InRange, a telemetry service intended to support future suborbital demonstration flights. Viasat said Skyrora and CGI had conducted ground tests, with further static tests planned before integration with Skylark L. This telemetry work is separate from proof of Skylark XL’s readiness or authorization for orbital flight.
Marlow described the broader mismatch between development and infrastructure this way: “The technology was outpacing the regulations, [and] the actual physical locations for spaceports.”

Older launch goals are not evidence of current cadence
Skyrora’s earlier schedules and launch-rate ambitions should be read as historical targets, not achieved performance. Its Q4 2021 update aimed for orbit by 2023 and described an ambition to reach 16 launches per year by 2030. A CAA environmental assessment search result surfaced a planning assumption of a ramp to 16 launches annually by 2029; that was an assumption in an assessment, not an operating record.
Viasat’s October 2025 release still described Skyrora’s aim as up to 16 launches a year by 2030. Payload’s October 2026 report, however, focuses on a tentative first orbital launch in 2030 and does not confirm that the older annual-cadence target remains unchanged. Neither the ambition nor the planning assumption establishes that Skyrora has launched at that rate.

How to read the 2030 target
- It is a target, not a commitment: Payload’s wording is that Skyrora is “tentatively aiming for 2030 for orbital launch.”
- Development remains underway: the reported hotfire involved a scaled-down engine version; the larger 70 kN first-stage engine is still in development.
- Infrastructure and authorization are distinct hurdles: the cited CAA licence is for suborbital Skylark L operations at SaxaVord, not evidence of authorization for an orbital Skylark XL launch.
- The company’s funding approach is part of its schedule: Marlow has described prioritizing a stable business, with development supported largely by revenue and grants, amid constrained investor and government interest.
For Skyrora, the important change is not a confirmed launch date but a more cautious stated horizon. The 2030 target depends on continued vehicle development, funding, regulatory progress and access to suitable launch infrastructure.
