The reliable way to host SkyFactory 5 is to run its separate server pack, not the regular client download. For the current 5.0.8 release, use Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge and a 64-bit Java 17 runtime. Download SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip, extract it to a dedicated folder, run the supplied installer or start script, accept the EULA, configure memory and server.properties, then expose the configured port only to the players you trust. Hosting at home gives you maximum control and no recurring hosting bill, while a managed host removes most router, firewall and uptime work.

What you need for a SkyFactory 5 server
SkyFactory 5 is a large, modded void-starting skyblock pack by Darkosto. Its progression combines automation and exploration systems such as Create, Mystical Agriculture, Draconic Evolution, RFTools Dimensions, gateways and a task book. Those systems run on the server, so every player must use a matching client installation and the host must run the matching mod loader and files.

CurseForge’s page showed about 1.6 million downloads when the figure was recorded in 2026. That number changes as the page receives downloads, so it is an activity indicator rather than a permanent popularity claim.
Choose home hosting or a managed server
There are two sensible ways to run the pack. A home server uses a computer you control and shifts installation, networking, updates, backups and electricity costs to you. A managed service rents those resources and normally provides a public endpoint and control panel.

Choose home hosting when you are comfortable with Java, command-line output, router administration and regular maintenance. Choose managed hosting when your group values a data-center connection, easier backups and a control panel more than direct machine access.
Download the correct SkyFactory 5 files
The normal SkyFactory5-5.0.8.zip is the client pack. It is not a replacement for the server distribution. In the project’s Files tab, open the Minecraft 1.20 server-pack files and download SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip.
- Open the SkyFactory 5 project page and select Files.
- Choose the server-pack entry for the release your players will install.
- Download
SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zipto the machine that will stay online. - Have each player install the corresponding client release, not a different 5.0.x build.
- Keep the downloaded archive as a recovery copy. Do not mix individual mods, configs or jars from another SkyFactory version into this installation.
If the project later lists a newer release, update the server and every client together. Recheck the required Java and Forge versions before changing a live world.
Set up a self-hosted server step by step
1. Install 64-bit Java 17
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime on the host operating system. Confirm which runtime the launch script will use with java -version. If that command reports an older release, correct the system path or edit the script so it points to Java 17 explicitly. A Java installation on the computer is not enough if the script silently invokes a different default.
2. Create a dedicated server folder
Create a folder used only for this world, such as a directory named for the pack and release. Extract every file from SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip into it. Keeping the server separate prevents a vanilla installation, another modpack or an old save from being selected accidentally and makes backups straightforward.

3. Run the supplied installer or start script
Use the scripts and launch configuration included in the server pack. Do not download an unrelated vanilla jar and do not copy a client archive into the server directory. The first run normally creates the world, configuration files and logs, then stops or pauses because the Minecraft EULA has not been accepted.

Open the generated eula.txt, review the Minecraft EULA, change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree, and save the file. If the file is regenerated, stop the process, make the change again and start from the supplied script rather than trying to bypass the check.
5. Set memory in the launch configuration
Open the pack’s start script or JVM-argument file and locate its memory settings. Allocate only memory the machine can spare while leaving room for the operating system and other services. The pack team recommends at least 6 GB for a client; that figure should not be presented as a guaranteed server requirement or a player limit. There is no official SkyFactory 5 server-capacity table, so begin conservatively, watch the console and operating-system memory use, and change one setting at a time.
Do not blindly paste JVM flags from another modpack. Keep a copy of the working script, and make a backup before changing allocation or garbage-collection options. If the host has insufficient physical memory, increasing -Xmx cannot solve the problem and can make the operating system swap or terminate the process.
6. Review server.properties
After the first run, open server.properties in the server folder. Set the message of the day, player limit, difficulty, whitelist and port to suit your group. Leave server-ip blank unless you have a specific reason to bind the process to one local address; an incorrect value can prevent the server from listening at all.

Record the final port before touching the router. Minecraft’s normal Java port is 25565, but the value in your own server.properties is authoritative. If you change it, update the firewall rule, router rule and the address you give players.
7. Start and verify the world
Run the same supplied start script again and wait for the console to report that the server has finished loading. Connect from the host computer or the same local network first. Check that the world is the expected void start, that the task book is present and that the console is loading Forge and the SkyFactory mods rather than a vanilla server.
Stop the server with its console stop command. Closing the window or killing the process can interrupt world saves and damage a modded region. Make a first backup of the complete server folder after this clean shutdown.
Let friends connect from outside your home
Local-network players
Players on the same home network should use the host computer’s private address, such as its local IPv4 address, together with the port from server.properties. Test this before configuring internet access; it separates Minecraft configuration problems from router and ISP problems.

- Assign the host computer a stable private address, preferably through a router DHCP reservation, so forwarding does not break after a reboot.
- Allow the Java server process through the host operating system’s firewall on the chosen port.
- Forward TCP traffic on that port from the router’s public interface to the host’s private address. Minecraft’s official Java guidance identifies 25565 as the default and says to forward the port listed in
server.properties. - Start the server and wait until it is fully loaded.
- Give trusted friends your public address and port. Test from a phone hotspot or another external network rather than relying only on a test from inside your LAN.
Minecraft warns that exposing a home IP creates a security risk. Use a whitelist, keep Java and the operating system patched, share the address privately and never publish it in a public post. If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound ports, ordinary forwarding may not work. In that case, a managed host or a private tunnel may be appropriate after you have checked the tunnel’s terms, access controls and security model.

Configure access and protect the world
Use a whitelist for a private group
Enable the whitelist in server.properties and add players from the server console. A whitelist is more useful than relying on an obscure port because it limits who can join if the address is discovered. Remove former players and review operator privileges regularly.
Back up saves and configuration
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world. Back up the world directory together with server.properties, whitelist and operator files, scripts, and any pack-specific configuration. Keep at least one copy on another drive or machine. Before an update, make a dated full backup so you can roll back if a registry change or mod mismatch prevents startup.

Do not post complete logs, public IP addresses or private tunnel credentials. Logs can reveal addresses and player names. Grant operator status only to people who need it, and use the host’s normal account and firewall protections instead of running unrelated downloads in the server directory.

The documented number is a 6 GB minimum recommended client allocation. It tells you what the pack team suggests for a player’s game, not how much a server must reserve. Server memory depends on the number of simultaneous players, loaded chunks, automation, dimensions and background services. The available material does not establish a universal RAM figure or player count.
Use this process instead of choosing a plan from a headline number:
- Start with a host that has enough physical memory for the operating system plus the Java process; do not allocate all installed RAM to Minecraft.
- Watch the server console, Java memory graphs and operating-system pressure during normal play and during busy automation or dimension changes.
- Increase allocation only when monitoring shows memory exhaustion and the machine has unused physical RAM.
- If the process crashes while memory is available, inspect the error and mod logs before adding RAM. A registry mismatch, bad Java runtime or corrupted region may be the real cause.
- For managed hosting, compare the plan’s actual RAM, CPU policy, storage, backup limits and upgrade path. Provider tiers are not interchangeable with the pack’s 6 GB client recommendation.
Updating SkyFactory without breaking a world
Do not update only the server or only the clients. Select a target release, stop the current server cleanly, make a full backup and confirm the target’s Minecraft, Forge and Java requirements. Replace the server files using the release’s server pack or the provider’s exact pack selector, then test the backup copy before opening the live world.
- Announce a maintenance window and stop new connections.
- Use the console stop command and wait for the process to exit.
- Copy the entire server directory and label the backup with the old version and date.
- Install the new matching server pack in a separate directory when possible.
- Move only the intended world and configuration data, following the release’s instructions; do not merge random mods or configs.
- Start the new instance, read the full console output and connect with one client using the exact same release.
- Keep the old directory until the group has completed a real play session and the backup is verified.
A 5.0.x label alone does not guarantee compatibility. Every player should use the exact same SkyFactory build and loader files; mixing releases can produce missing-registry, missing-mod or connection errors.
Troubleshoot the problems that occur most often
The server starts as vanilla or has no SkyFactory content
- Confirm that you extracted
SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip, not the client archive. - Run the supplied pack script or launch configuration, not an unrelated vanilla jar.
- Check the console for Forge and mod-loading lines before attempting a connection.
- Verify that the script is running from the directory containing the pack files.
Java errors or an immediate exit
- Run
java -versionin the same account and environment used by the script. - Ensure it reports 64-bit Java 17, and correct the script’s Java path if another installation is selected.
- Read the first error and the complete log rather than changing several JVM flags at once.
- Restore the last known-good start script if a memory or flag edit caused the failure.
Friends cannot connect
- Wait for the console to finish loading and confirm the server is still running.
- Check that the friend is using the exact SkyFactory release and Forge client.
- Confirm the port in
server.propertiesmatches both the firewall exception and router forward. - Verify that the router forwards to the host’s current private address.
- Test from the same LAN, then from an external network, to identify where the path fails.
- Consider carrier-grade NAT or an ISP block if local tests pass but external tests consistently fail.
Registry, missing-mod or connection mismatch errors
Make every player reinstall or repair the exact same pack release. Do not copy individual mods from another 5.0.x build, and do not assume that a client-only update can connect to an older server. Compare the release number, Minecraft version and Forge loader before deleting anything.
Lag, crashes or repeated timeouts
- Inspect console warnings, crash reports and memory use before changing JVM flags.
- Check whether the host is swapping, overheating or running other heavy services.
- Reduce unnecessary background workloads and keep the world backed up.
- Increase resources only when the host has capacity and the evidence points to resource exhaustion.
- If a particular dimension, machine or region triggers the issue, preserve the logs and backup before editing or removing world data.
When managed hosting is the better answer
A managed deployment is often simpler for a group that does not want to expose a home network or maintain a computer 24 hours a day. CurseForge’s hosted-server workflow lets you choose a supported modpack, plan, region and server details, then deploys a matching server pack. The documentation identifies Shockbyte as the hosting provider and Tebex as the billing system; availability, regions, plan limits, prices and support can change.
Before paying, verify the exact SkyFactory 5 build offered, Java and Forge compatibility, allocated RAM and CPU policy, storage, automated-backup schedule, restore process, file access, whitelist controls, cancellation terms and upgrade path. A plan advertised with a large memory number may still perform poorly if CPU time is constrained, and a cheap plan is not useful if it cannot run the current pack.

Official server software and the EULA
Minecraft states: Yes, the official Minecraft server software for both Java and Bedrock is free to download from the Minecraft website.
SkyFactory adds its own modpack files and scripts; you still need to follow the pack’s Java, Forge and EULA sequence.

Use the port actually present in your file if you changed it, and forward it to the machine running the server.server.properties query.port. The default it is 25565 so in your router settings you will need to specify that port to forward.
