SkyFactory 4 runs on Minecraft 1.12.2 and should be hosted with 64-bit Java 8. There is no official numeric RAM or CPU minimum from the pack authors. As practical guidance, a small private server is commonly estimated at about 6 GB of total host RAM, while a heavily automated world may need 8–10 GB or more. Those figures are operating estimates, not guarantees. Choose a modern CPU with strong single-thread performance, reserve memory for the operating system, and increase the Java heap only after monitoring tick time, garbage collection and loaded chunks.

The distinction between total host RAM and Java heap is critical. The amount of physical memory in the computer is not the same as the value assigned to -Xmx. Java needs room for the operating system, native overhead, Forge libraries, file cache and background services. If the same computer also runs a SkyFactory client, that client needs memory too.

SkyFactory 4 is a downloadable CurseForge modpack. The listed 4.2.4 server files target Minecraft 1.12.2. That places the server in the older Forge and Java generation rather than the Java versions used by newer Minecraft releases. Confirm the release number on the CurseForge project’s Files page before downloading, because a client and server built from different releases can fail to connect or generate a different mod set.
Do not assume that installing the newest Java available on your operating system is correct. Current setup guidance for this 1.12.2 Forge generation uses Java 8. A 64-bit Java 8 runtime avoids the address-space limits of a 32-bit installation and is the appropriate baseline for a dedicated server.

How much RAM does a SkyFactory 4 server need?
The pack authors do not publish a guaranteed RAM minimum. Two practical points matter more than a single headline number: how much memory the entire host has, and how much of that memory is reserved for the JVM heap.
Use the published estimates as starting points
A FreaksMC hosting guide dated October 7, 2026 suggests about 6 GB of RAM for a small group and 8–10 GB once automation becomes large. These are operational estimates, not an official requirement, benchmark or promise that every world will perform at those values. Player count, loaded chunks, machines, entities, dimensions and the size of automated factories all change the result.
Total memory is not the Java heap
TickServ’s guidance distinguishes total host memory from the JVM heap. The heap is the portion Java can use for Minecraft objects; the machine also needs memory outside the heap. Assigning all physical RAM to Java can force the operating system to swap or terminate processes, making the server less stable rather than faster.
- On a shared computer, reserve memory for the operating system, desktop, monitoring tools and any other services.
- If the host also runs the client, reserve additional memory for that client before choosing
-Xmx. - On a dedicated machine, leave headroom for Java’s native allocations, Forge libraries, file caching and backup processes.
- Increase the heap in measured steps only when monitoring shows memory pressure or frequent garbage collection.
How to choose a starting heap
Start conservatively below the host’s physical capacity. For example, a machine with 8 GB total RAM cannot safely give all 8 GB to -Xmx; the operating system and Java outside-heap allocations still need space. The correct value depends on the machine’s other workloads, not only the number printed on a hosting plan. Watch the server console and system monitor while several players explore, load new chunks and operate machines. A heap that is too small produces repeated garbage-collection pauses or an out-of-memory failure; a heap that is too large can lengthen collection pauses and starve the host.
What CPU does SkyFactory 4 require?
No reviewed official source names a required CPU model, clock speed or core count. SkyFactory 4 is a modded 1.12.2 server, so the most important characteristic is strong single-thread performance for the main game tick. Extra cores still help the operating system, networking, backups and auxiliary tasks, but adding cores does not remove a bottleneck in the primary tick thread.

What increases CPU demand?
- More simultaneous players, especially when they are in separate areas.
- Newly generated or continuously loaded chunks.
- Large numbers of machines, item conduits, fluids, mobs and other entities.
- Automation that performs work every tick or spans several dimensions.
- World saves, chunk loading and other background activity occurring during play.
Choose a recent desktop or server processor with good per-core performance and spare capacity rather than selecting solely by core count. If the server shares a computer with a game client, video tools or other servers, those tasks reduce the headroom available to Minecraft. A CPU recommendation stated as a specific model or benchmark would be misleading because the pack’s workload changes with each factory and world.
Prerequisites before installing
- SkyFactory 4 server files for the intended release, such as the listed 4.2.4 files.
- A 64-bit Java 8 runtime installed on the host.
- A dedicated, writable directory for the server, separate from the client installation.
- Permission to run scripts and open the server’s network port if friends will connect from outside the local network.
- Enough physical RAM for the operating system plus the Java heap; do not plan around the heap number alone.
- A backup location with enough space for world copies and configuration files.
SkyFactory 4 server setup, step by step
1. Download the matching server package
- Open the SkyFactory 4 project on CurseForge and go to its Files page.
- Select the release you intend to use. The 4.2.4 server files are for Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Download the server package rather than simply copying a client’s
.minecraftdirectory.
Keep the downloaded archive so you can identify the exact release when troubleshooting. Everyone who joins should install the same SkyFactory release and, where the launcher exposes it, the same modpack version.
2. Install and verify 64-bit Java 8
- Install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime on the host.
- Check which executable the server scripts will use. If the machine has several Java versions, use the full path to the Java 8 executable in the script or adjust the system path deliberately.
- Confirm that the command reports Java 8 before proceeding. A script silently calling Java 17 or another newer version can cause Forge launch errors even when Java 8 is installed.
3. Extract the files into a dedicated directory
Create a directory used only for this server and extract the server archive there. Avoid protected operating-system folders and locations that are automatically synchronized while the server is running. The directory will contain scripts, Forge libraries, configuration files, logs and the world itself.
4. Run the installer script
Run the installation script included with the server package. It downloads or creates the Forge libraries required by the pack. Let it finish before launching the server; stopping it partway through can leave an incomplete library set.
5. Start once and accept the EULA
- Run the supplied start script once. The first launch normally creates configuration files and an
eula.txtfile before stopping. - Read Mojang’s terms in that file. Set
eula=trueonly after accepting them. - Start the server again so Forge can complete its first initialization and create the world directory.
Do not delete the generated files between launches unless a documented recovery step calls for it. They contain the Forge and pack configuration the server needs.

6. Set the Java heap in the start script
Find the JVM arguments in the supplied start script and set the maximum heap with -Xmx. The value is a ceiling, not a guarantee that Java will immediately consume that much memory. Keep it below total physical RAM so the operating system and Java’s non-heap allocations have room. If you change the value, stop the server cleanly first, edit the script, then launch it again and verify the startup line in the console.
7. Match the client and server versions
Install the same SkyFactory 4 release on each client. A mismatched mod list, Forge build or pack version can produce a missing-mod error, a registry mismatch or a disconnect during login. When diagnosing a connection problem, compare the exact file or profile version before changing server settings.
8. Configure the world before inviting players
Use server.properties for world-generation settings. The DarkPacks maintainer wiki documents more than 30 world types and supplies the exact generator-settings and level-type pairs for them. Stop the server before editing the file, make the change, save it, and start the server again. World-generation settings generally apply when a new world is created, so changing them after a world already exists may not transform existing terrain.
Choosing an island, team and prestige setup
World types
SkyFactory 4 is not limited to one island template. The maintainer, Darkosto, states that “SkyFactory 4 features 30+ world types” in the DarkPacks SkyFactory-4 Multiplayer Instructions page, edited August 22, 2019. Use the wiki’s exact setting pair rather than guessing at capitalization or punctuation. A typo in generator-settings can cause the server to fall back to an unintended generator or fail during world creation.
Player islands
For multiplayer islands, use the documented /topography island commands. Follow the command sequence in the maintainer instructions so each player is assigned the intended island and spawn behavior. Test the process with a temporary account or backup world before inviting a larger group.

Teams
The Together Forever team commands documented by the maintainer let players invite one another and share an island. Have the intended team owner create or claim the island first, then send invitations using the documented syntax. Team membership and island ownership are separate from the server’s whitelist, so configure both when you want a private community.
Prestige
Prestige is optional. Enable it in prestige.cfg only if the group wants the progression system. The maintainer wiki warns that updates may require repeating this change, so check the configuration after updating the pack or replacing server files. Back up the configuration before changing it.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Hosting is optional; no provider was verified as an official SkyFactory partner. The practical choice is between operating the machine yourself and paying a host to manage the environment.

For a small group that already owns a suitable computer and can configure its router, self-hosting offers the most control. A managed plan is more convenient when port forwarding, uptime, backups or hardware upgrades are the main obstacles. In either case, confirm that the service supports Java 8, Forge for Minecraft 1.12.2 and custom modpack files before paying.
Monitoring performance as the factory grows
Requirements change after the first few hours of play. A newly generated island with one player is not representative of a mature world containing several automated bases.
- Watch tick behavior: sustained tick delays indicate CPU or world-activity pressure even when plenty of RAM appears free.
- Watch garbage collection: frequent or long pauses suggest the heap is under pressure or poorly sized.
- Watch loaded chunks: multiple players exploring separate areas can increase both CPU work and memory use.
- Watch entities and machines: farms, item networks and mobs can create a heavier per-tick workload than player count alone suggests.
- Watch system memory: if the host begins swapping, reduce the heap or move other workloads before adding more Java memory.
Change one variable at a time, keep a dated note of the old JVM settings, and restart cleanly after each change. This makes it possible to tell whether a performance improvement came from a heap adjustment, a reduced workload or a world-generation change.

The server exits immediately after launch
Check the Java path in the start script first. SkyFactory 4’s 1.12.2 Forge generation expects Java 8, and a newer Java executable can fail before the world loads. Then confirm that the installer script completed and that the Forge libraries exist in the server directory.
Players receive a missing-mod or registry-mismatch error
Compare the client and server pack releases, Forge build and installed mods. Reinstall the exact client profile that matches the server rather than copying individual files from an unrelated version.
The server runs out of memory
Check both the -Xmx value and total host usage. A low heap can cause Java exhaustion, but assigning a heap equal to physical RAM can starve the operating system and create instability. Reduce competing workloads, leave host headroom, and increase the heap only when the machine can support it.
Performance worsens as automation expands
Inspect tick time, loaded chunks, entities and machine networks before assuming that more RAM will solve the issue. A strong single-thread CPU and reducing unnecessary always-loaded activity may matter more than increasing the heap. If the host is shared, move unrelated services or give the server a machine with more CPU headroom.

The selected world type does not appear
Recheck the exact generator-settings and level-type values in the maintainer wiki, including punctuation and capitalization. Make changes with the server stopped and test them on a new world; existing terrain will not necessarily change after a generator setting is edited.
Friends cannot connect
For a self-hosted server, verify the host firewall, router port forwarding and the address shared with players. A managed host normally supplies the reachable address, but its control panel may still require the server to be started and the correct port to be used. Connection troubleshooting cannot fix a client/server version mismatch, so verify versions first.
