Sky Mobile’s reported £1-per-month SIM-only plan is best understood as an emergency or second line. It combines 1GB of mobile data with unlimited UK calls and texts, runs on O2 UK coverage and lets unused data roll over for up to a year. That price is unusually low, but the offer reportedly comes with a credit check and a 12-month minimum term, so it is less flexible than a rolling monthly SIM.
What the £1 Sky Mobile SIM includes
The offer reported on 10 August 2026 is a phone SIM with 1GB of data each month, unlimited calls and unlimited texts to UK numbers. It uses O2’s UK network coverage. Unused data can roll over for up to 12 months, which is useful when the SIM spends most of its time idle and is only activated for occasional navigation, messaging or emergency access.

Why it works as a backup SIM
A cheap second number
At £1 a month, the recurring cost is small enough to keep a spare number active. You can put the SIM in a backup handset, use it as a second line for calls, or keep it available for situations in which your primary provider has an outage.
Calls and texts remain usable even when data is limited
Unlimited UK calls and texts mean the 1GB allowance does not have to cover ordinary voice communication. That makes the plan more practical for an emergency phone than a data-only tariff, provided the handset can receive O2 coverage where you need it.

Rollover helps occasional users
Because unused data can accumulate for up to a year, a low-use backup SIM may have more than one month’s allowance available when it is finally needed. Rollover does not turn the plan into a high-data service: the allowance is still limited and the offer’s exact rollover handling should be checked in the contract.
What 1GB can realistically do
The published estimates below are practical guidance from the 2026 report, not independent laboratory tests. Actual consumption changes with app, video quality, automatic updates, advertising and handset settings.

Those figures make 1GB suitable for occasional maps, messages, email and light browsing. Frequent video, hotspot use, cloud backups, app updates or sustained social-media scrolling can consume it quickly. For someone who spends substantial time online, this is not a sensible primary-phone allowance.
Important restrictions before you order
It is a 12-month commitment
The reported offer requires a credit check and a 12-month contract. That is the trade-off for the £1 headline price: you should expect to remain liable for the minimum term even if you later decide the SIM is unnecessary.

Changing plans can affect the promotion
Switching plans during the minimum term may remove the promotional data offer. Check the plan rules before changing tariffs rather than assuming the £1 price and rollover will continue unchanged.
Roaming is not included at the UK price
Roaming is reported at £2 per day in most destinations. Anyone planning to use the SIM abroad should confirm the destination list and current roaming terms before travel; a short trip can cost more than many months of UK service.

Coverage is location-dependent
The SIM uses O2 UK coverage, so check that network’s signal in the places where the backup will be used. A low price is of little value if the spare handset is stored at a home or workplace with poor reception.

- Need a SIM for a tablet, dongle or router? A data-only rolling option such as SMARTY’s listed plan is designed for those devices.
- Expect unpredictable or heavy data use? Start with a plan that provides more data or allows inexpensive add-ons; 1GB can be exhausted quickly by video and background activity.
- Travel frequently? Compare destination-specific roaming charges first. The reported £2-per-day roaming rate may outweigh the UK saving.
Bottom line for a spare phone
The Sky Mobile £1 1GB SIM is compelling when the job is to keep a cheap UK number alive, provide unlimited calls and texts, and retain a small emergency data allowance. Its low price and rollover make it unusually well suited to occasional use. The credit check, 12-month commitment, roaming charge and modest data allowance are material limitations, so heavy users and anyone who needs month-to-month control should choose a more flexible tariff instead.
