Which headphones have more bass?

Skullcandy describes the result as bass you can feel against your head. That is fundamentally different from simply tuning a headphone for a larger bass response. With the wheel turned up, kick drums, sub-bass lines, explosions and engine sounds can become a pressure-like vibration around the ears.
What the Crusher wheel changes
The wheel is an intensity control rather than a conventional volume control. At a low setting, the Crusher 720 behaves more like a normal wireless headphone with enhanced low end. At higher settings, the sensory driver adds a stronger physical movement. Because the control is independent, you can reduce the sensation for podcasts or acoustic music without lowering the overall listening level.
The physical effect is particularly obvious with electronic music, hip-hop, cinematic effects and games that contain sustained low-frequency sounds. It can also make a film soundtrack feel more like a large speaker system, although the sensation is personal: some listeners enjoy strong vibration while others find it tiring during long sessions.

How the XM5 approaches bass
The WH-1000XM5 is the more conventional premium headphone in this pairing. It can deliver powerful low frequencies, but the supplied Sony documentation establishes its noise-cancelling and ambient-sound functions, not a competing tactile-bass mechanism. If your requirement is “headphones that shake with bass,” the Crusher 720 is the direct match.
That does not make the XM5 unsuitable for bass-heavy music. It is the better fit when bass is one part of a broader listening experience and you also need quiet surroundings, a refined everyday design and dependable isolation from transport or office noise.
Does the Crusher 720 have ANC?
No. Crusher 720 does not include Active Noise Canceling. Skullcandy’s support documentation explicitly distinguishes its Stay-Aware feature from ANC. Stay-Aware uses the headphone’s microphones to amplify ambient sound so you can hear what is happening around you without removing the headphones.

That means the two modes solve opposite problems:
- ANC attempts to reduce external noise, especially steady sounds such as aircraft engines, train rumble and air-conditioning.
- Stay-Aware intentionally passes outside sound through, helping you hear announcements, traffic or a colleague.
Turning on Stay-Aware will not make a flight quieter. The Crusher’s earcups may provide some passive physical blocking, but passive isolation is not a substitute for electronically cancelling low-frequency environmental noise.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is the clear choice whenever reducing environmental noise is a stated requirement. On a plane, ANC can make engine rumble less intrusive; on a train it can reduce the constant roar; in an office it can help mask air-conditioning and other steady background sounds. Sony’s official specification documentation identifies the XM5 as the noise-cancelling model in this comparison.
The Crusher 720 makes more sense when you are already in a reasonably quiet place and want entertainment to feel physical. It suits a home listening session, a gaming setup or a film night better than a noisy commute. Its Stay-Aware mode is useful for awareness outdoors, but it does not provide the quiet bubble that the Sony is designed to create.
Battery, charging and weight
Crusher 720 figures
Skullcandy rates the Crusher 720 for up to 65 hours of battery life. A 10-minute rapid charge is rated for up to 4 hours of playback. Those are manufacturer ratings, so actual runtime changes with volume, sensory-bass intensity, wireless features and use of spatial audio.
The listed weight is 362.8 g, and the headphones use 40.7 mm drivers. That is a substantial load compared with many everyday wireless models. The weight helps accommodate the dual-driver design, but it is a factor to consider if you wear headphones continuously during a long flight or workday.
XM5 figures and regional checks
The supplied Sony evidence confirms the XM5’s noise-cancelling and ambient-sound functions but does not establish one universal battery, weight or codec figure for every market. Sony’s specification pages can differ by region. Check the page for your country before treating a battery or weight number as applicable to your purchase.

For a buying decision, the practical distinction is straightforward: Crusher 720 has a clearly published 65-hour rating and fast-charge claim, while the Sony’s exact current specification should be verified against the local listing.
Sound quality, spatial audio and gaming
The Crusher 720’s sensory system does not replace its normal audio drivers. Music and game detail still comes from the acoustic drivers, while the dedicated bass driver adds the physical layer. GamesRadar’s reviewer described the effect as highly engaging across games and music and reported that the full-range drivers retained usable detail.
In that review, the Crusher bass technology “never distorted the sound of any game I threw its way.” The reviewer tested the headphones for more than two weeks across PC, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. That is one reviewer’s experience rather than a guarantee for every title, but it supports the idea that the vibration effect can be strong without automatically overwhelming the rest of a mix.
THX Spatial Audio limitations
Crusher 720 includes THX Spatial Audio, but it does not include head tracking. Skullcandy also states that spatial audio is disabled out of the box. You must enable it through the Skullcandy app or assign it to the custom button before using it.
Spatial processing and sensory bass are separate controls. You can use the Crusher wheel without spatial audio, and you should test both independently. Spatial effects may help a game or film feel wider, while excessive bass intensity can make dialogue or directional cues harder to follow.
Gaming choice
Choose the Crusher 720 when explosions, racing engines and soundtrack bass are central to your enjoyment. Choose the XM5 when your priority is playing or watching in a noisy room and you need ANC to reduce distractions. Neither choice should be based on the bass label alone: the environment in which you play can matter more than the soundtrack.

Calls and microphone performance
The Crusher 720’s microphone is the main documented weakness. GamesRadar found it below premium expectations and noted some underlying white noise. That may be acceptable for occasional voice chat, but it is a warning for people who take frequent work calls or need consistently clean speech in a busy environment.

The supplied Sony evidence does not provide a directly comparable independent microphone result. Do not assume the XM5 will outperform the Crusher in every call condition without checking current tests for your devices and software. The defensible distinction from the available evidence is that the Crusher has a reported microphone limitation, while the XM5’s documented advantage in this comparison is ANC.
Connectivity and everyday features
Crusher 720 supports Bluetooth 5.3 and multipoint pairing, allowing it to maintain connections with compatible devices such as a phone and computer. It also includes a 3.5 mm AUX cable and a travel bag. Wired listening is useful when a device has a headphone output or when you want to avoid Bluetooth latency, although the headphones still need to be used according to Skullcandy’s power and cable behavior.

- You play games where explosions, engines and low-frequency effects are part of the fun.
- You mostly listen at home or in another environment where outside noise is not the primary problem.
- You value a long manufacturer-rated battery figure and a physical bass control.
Choose WH-1000XM5 for noise-first listening
- You fly, commute by train or work near continuous background noise.
- You explicitly require active noise cancellation.
- You prefer a conventional premium headphone presentation rather than a vibrating earcup.
- You want to hear less of the environment instead of using an awareness mode.
When neither priority is absolute
If you want both very strong tactile bass and ANC in one pair, this comparison does not offer a single model that clearly provides both. Compare the final delivered price, warranty, return policy and included accessories in your region. A lower promotional price should not change the feature decision: the fundamental trade-off remains tactile bass versus active noise cancellation.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Expecting Stay-Aware to make a commute quieter
Stay-Aware is an awareness mode, not ANC. Disable it when you want the least outside sound from the Crusher, but remember that the model still does not electronically cancel noise. For genuine noise reduction, use the XM5.
Turning the Crusher wheel all the way up immediately
Start at a low or moderate setting and increase it gradually. A strong vibration can be exciting for a song or game but fatiguing for speech, acoustic music or a long session. Adjust intensity independently from the main volume.

Skullcandy states that THX Spatial Audio is disabled out of the box and has no head tracking. Enable it in the app or through the custom button, then test it with content that benefits from spatial processing.
Buying on an outdated price or specification
Recheck the regional product pages immediately before ordering. The Crusher’s $139.99 display price, stock and promotional terms can change, and Sony’s published battery, weight and codec details may differ by market.
