Short answer: The Sony WH-CH720N has the strongest independent all-round recommendation in the evidence available, but its direct RTINGS comparison is against the older Skullcandy Hesh ANC—not the newer Hesh 540 ANC or Crusher ANC 2. Choose Hesh 540 ANC if its app, Stay-Aware mode, THX Spatial Audio and long claimed battery life matter most; choose Crusher ANC 2 if adjustable sensory bass is the priority; and treat Soundcore Q20i as a low-price option whose Consumer Reports listing provides a useful price-and-score reference rather than a head-to-head verdict.
Use the framework below to compare what matters in real use: noise reduction by sound type, fit, sound character, ANC-on battery life, controls and app features, weight, and the price actually available in your country.

Which headphones are actually being compared?
Skullcandy’s current noise-cancelling collection includes Hesh 540 ANC and Crusher ANC 2, alongside other models. The alternatives most useful for a budget comparison here are Sony WH-CH720N and Soundcore Q20i. They occupy a similar over-ear, wireless ANC category, but the evidence behind each model is different.
| Model | Published facts and evidence | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Skullcandy Hesh 540 ANC | Skullcandy describes active noise cancellation, four external ANC microphones, Stay-Aware, app controls and THX Spatial Audio. Its product page lists 50 hours with ANC on and 65 hours with ANC off. | Independent measurements of ANC, sound balance, comfort and actual runtime; current price and stock. |
| Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 | Skullcandy positions it around adjustable sensory bass and customizable ANC. The manufacturer lists Bluetooth 5.2 and a weight of 332 g. | Whether the heavier design and bass-forward presentation suit you; measured ANC and battery performance. |
| Sony WH-CH720N | RTINGS’ comparison with the older Skullcandy Hesh ANC favors Sony overall for comfort, build, sound balance, multi-device pairing and battery life. What Hi-Fi?’s July 24, 2026 guide recommends it as a budget ANC choice. | Remember that neither source is a direct WH-CH720N-versus-Hesh 540 ANC test; check current regional pricing. |
| Soundcore Q20i | Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists a $70 guide price and an overall score of 72. | The guide price is not a live quote, and the score does not establish performance against either Skullcandy model or Sony. |
Those figures are not equivalent measurements. Skullcandy’s battery and weight numbers are manufacturer specifications, while the Q20i price and score come from a dated buying guide. Prices, colors, bundles and availability can change, so check the retailer and country you will actually use.

Start with the kind of noise you need to reduce
ANC is most effective when microphones and signal processing can identify a relatively steady, low-frequency sound. Engine, train and aircraft rumble are the classic examples. Human speech, keyboard clicks, clattering dishes and other irregular or high-frequency sounds are harder to suppress completely. A good seal from the ear cushions often matters as much as the electronics.
Steady low-frequency noise
For commuting or flying, test whether a headset reduces the continuous roar rather than expecting silence. Compare the same track, volume and seat position on each pair. Listen for how much external rumble remains during quiet passages in your music, and whether switching ANC on creates an audible hiss or pressure sensation.
Voices and sudden sounds
Do not use a coffee-shop conversation as the only ANC test. Voices and sudden noises can leak through even when low-frequency cancellation is strong. If you need awareness while walking or waiting for announcements, compare each model’s transparency or awareness mode and how quickly its controls switch between modes. Hesh 540 ANC’s Stay-Aware mode is a manufacturer-described feature; its real-world effectiveness still needs to be judged with your own voice and surroundings.
Fit is part of noise isolation
Ear cushions that leave gaps reduce passive isolation and make ANC work harder. Glasses, hair, earrings and different ear shapes can all change the seal. Try each headset for several minutes while moving your head, and check whether the cups stay sealed when you look down or turn sideways.
Sound character: neutral balance or deliberately heavy bass?
Sound preference can outweigh a modest ANC difference. A balanced tuning makes voices, podcasts and acoustic instruments easier to judge. A bass-emphasized tuning can make electronic music, hip-hop and films feel more physical, but may obscure vocals or become tiring at high volume.
Hesh 540 ANC
Skullcandy’s product materials emphasize its app features and THX Spatial Audio. Treat those as capabilities rather than proof of a particular measured frequency response. Use the app’s available equalization controls, if offered in your region and firmware, to adjust the balance to your taste instead of assuming a marketing description predicts the sound you will hear.

Crusher ANC 2
The defining feature is adjustable sensory bass. Skullcandy describes it as bass you can raise or lower, alongside customizable ANC. That control is useful if more than one person will use the headphones or if you want different settings for music and spoken audio. It does not mean the ANC is stronger: bass intensity and noise cancellation are separate functions. At 332 g according to Skullcandy’s specification, Crusher ANC 2 also deserves a longer comfort test than a lighter alternative.

Sony WH-CH720N
RTINGS’ direct comparison with the older Hesh ANC found Sony’s sound balance preferable in its overall assessment. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide also selected the WH-CH720N as a budget recommendation, writing that its reviewers had not found another noise-cancelling pair at that price with the same “all-round appeal.” That is an editorial judgment, not a laboratory ranking against Hesh 540 ANC.
Soundcore Q20i
The Consumer Reports listing supplies a score and guide price, but not enough comparative detail to predict whether its tuning will suit you better than Skullcandy or Sony. Treat it as a candidate to audition, not as a confirmed winner based on the number 72 alone.
Comfort, clamp and weight for long sessions
Comfort is not a cosmetic issue: a headset that becomes painful after an hour will not be useful on a flight or workday. Check four things independently.
- Headband pressure: The band should stay stable without creating a concentrated hot spot on your crown.
- Ear-cup depth: Your ears should sit inside the cushions rather than touching the drivers or inner fabric.
- Clamp and seal: Excessive clamp can cause jaw fatigue; too little can break the seal when you move.
- Heat: Closed over-ear pads can become warm, especially with ANC enabled for several hours.
In RTINGS’ comparison updated January 12, 2026, the Sony WH-CH720N scored better overall than the older Hesh ANC in comfort and build as well as sound, pairing and battery categories. That result is useful evidence for Sony’s design against that older model, but it cannot be silently transferred to Hesh 540 ANC, whose fit and padding may differ. Crusher ANC 2’s published 332 g weight makes a direct wear test particularly important; no equivalent weight figure is established here for the other models.

Battery figures are meaningful only when the operating condition is attached. Hesh 540 ANC’s official product information states 50 hours with ANC on and 65 hours with ANC off. Those are manufacturer claims inspected in 2026, not independently verified runtime results in the sources available here.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
When comparing any model, ask whether the quoted figure includes ANC, a particular codec, a fixed volume, calls, spatial processing or another special mode. A long ANC-off number may not describe your commute. Also check charging behavior: whether a short charge provides useful playback, whether the headset can play while charging, and what happens when the battery is empty. Those details can vary by firmware and region, so verify them in the current manual or product page.
Features that can change the buying decision
Awareness and transparency
Hesh 540 ANC lists Stay-Aware, which is intended to let outside sound in without removing the headphones. Compare how naturally voices sound and whether the mode introduces a distracting hiss. A transparency mode is valuable only if you can activate it quickly and identify which setting is active.
Apps and equalization
Skullcandy promotes app features for Hesh 540 ANC and customization for Crusher ANC 2. Check the app’s compatibility with your phone, the number of saved EQ presets, firmware-update process and whether settings remain stored when you connect to another device. App features are a practical advantage only if you are willing to install and maintain the app.

RTINGS specifically cited multi-device pairing as an advantage for Sony over the older Hesh ANC. If you move between a laptop and phone, test whether both remain connected, whether audio pauses correctly for a call and how reliably playback returns afterward. Do not assume that a newer model has identical pairing behavior to an older one, or that every regional variant supports the same functions.
Spatial audio and call use
THX Spatial Audio is listed for Hesh 540 ANC by Skullcandy. Spatial processing can be enjoyable for films or games, but it is separate from ANC and may alter music balance or battery use. For calls, compare microphone clarity in a windy street and a quiet room; the available sources do not provide a cross-model call-quality ranking.

The clearest head-to-head evidence is RTINGS’ Sony WH-CH720N versus Skullcandy Hesh ANC comparison, updated January 12, 2026. RTINGS concludes that Sony is better overall, pointing to comfort, build, sound balance, multi-device pairing and battery life. The page compares Sony with the older Hesh ANC, not Hesh 540 ANC and not Crusher ANC 2.

- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. That distinction matters because product names can look similar while hardware, tuning, microphones, firmware and cushions change. The RTINGS result supports a purchase decision when the alternative is specifically the older Hesh ANC. It is a useful directional reference for Sony’s strengths, not proof that Sony wins every category against every current Skullcandy model.
What Hi-Fi?’s noise-cancelling guide, dated July 24, 2026, recommends the WH-CH720N as a budget option and says its reviewers found it reliably dampened background noise on commutes. That is an expert review observation under the outlet’s own testing conditions, not a direct test of Hesh 540 ANC.
Where Soundcore Q20i fits the budget
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists Soundcore Q20i at a guide price of $70 with an overall score of 72. The figures belong to that guide and date; they are not a guaranteed current checkout price and do not constitute a four-way ANC ranking.
Use Q20i as a price-sensitive shortlist entry when a lower upfront cost is more important than having a detailed independent comparison with Hesh 540 ANC or Crusher ANC 2. Before buying, confirm the exact model, warranty, return policy and current price in your market. A discount can disappear, and regional bundles can contain different accessories or model identifiers.
How to make a fair in-store or home comparison
- Set a budget ceiling and return deadline. Record the price you can actually pay, including taxes and delivery, rather than relying on an old guide price.
- Use the same source and volume. Play familiar music, a podcast and a quiet test track on every headset. Keep loudness similar; louder often sounds “better” even when it is not.
- Test ANC with steady and irregular noise. Try low-frequency rumble, nearby speech and sudden sounds. Switch ANC off briefly to separate electronic cancellation from the ear-cup seal.
- Wear each pair for at least 20–30 minutes. Move your head, wear your usual glasses and check for heat, pressure and seal loss. This is especially important for the 332 g Crusher ANC 2.
- Check controls without looking. Confirm that ANC, awareness and playback controls are easy to identify and that accidental presses are unlikely.
- Test your devices. Pair with your phone and computer, make a call, walk out of range and reconnect. If you need multipoint, verify simultaneous connections rather than assuming it.
- Measure battery use honestly. Start with ANC enabled, your normal volume and the features you will actually use. Compare the result with the manufacturer’s stated condition.
- Inspect the return and support terms. Keep packaging until you have checked fit, charging, app compatibility and firmware behavior. A return window is valuable when comfort cannot be predicted from specifications.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Equating more microphones with better ANC: Hesh 540 ANC’s four external ANC microphones describe the design, not a comparative performance score.
- Using bass as a proxy for noise cancellation: Crusher’s adjustable sensory bass changes sound impact; it does not establish stronger cancellation.
- Generalizing an old model test: Sony’s RTINGS win is against the older Hesh ANC. It is not a measured verdict on Hesh 540 ANC or Crusher ANC 2.
- Treating a guide price as a live deal: The Q20i’s $70 figure comes from Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide and may not match today’s store price.
- Expecting silence: ANC reduces or dampens noise; voices, irregular sounds and poor seals can remain audible.
- Comparing battery numbers without conditions: Hesh 540 ANC’s 50-hour and 65-hour figures differ because ANC is on in one case and off in the other.
A practical decision rule
Pick Sony WH-CH720N when you want the best-supported all-round choice and are comfortable relying on evidence that directly covers the older Hesh ANC rather than the current Hesh 540 ANC. Pick Hesh 540 ANC when its current Skullcandy feature set—Stay-Aware, app controls, THX Spatial Audio and the manufacturer’s 50-hour ANC-on claim—matches your priorities and you can confirm comfort and measured performance through a good return policy. Pick Crusher ANC 2 when adjustable sensory bass is the feature you will use often enough to justify testing its 332 g weight and fit. Consider Soundcore Q20i when the lowest verified price available to you is decisive, while treating the Consumer Reports score of 72 as guide context rather than proof it outperforms the others.

Whichever model you choose, make ANC effectiveness, seal, comfort and ANC-on endurance the first checks. App extras and bass controls are valuable differentiators, but they cannot compensate for a painful fit or cancellation that does not suit your main environment.
