Choose the route that gives you the lower final checkout total for your address, retailer, basket and delivery window, while checking whether your existing Skip+ or Instacart+ membership applies.
The Skip grocery experience launched in Canada on October 6, 2026. Inside Skip, you select a store from an Instacart-powered grocery tab; an Instacart shopper picks the order. Direct Instacart customers place the order in Instacart’s app or website and can track it and communicate with the shopper there. The practical differences are the app entry point, membership rules, local availability and the fees shown at checkout.

That table is a route comparison, not a promise of identical prices or inventory. Instacart says retailers control pricing, and storefronts can differ in price, selection and fulfillment. Check the actual screens for your address.

An embedded Instacart route, not a separate grocery inventory
Skip’s grocery tab is an embedded route into Instacart’s service. You open Skip, choose a participating store, browse the store’s live Instacart catalog and submit the order through the Instacart-powered flow. An Instacart shopper then shops for the items. Treating Skip as a completely separate grocery marketplace can lead to a misleading comparison: the underlying catalog and fulfillment are supplied by Instacart.

When the partnership launched
Skip and Instacart announced the Canadian partnership on October 6, 2026. Instacart’s announcement reported a Canadian network of more than 130 retail banners and over 9,000 locations. That is a company-reported network figure, not a guarantee that every banner, store or product is available at your address. Store coverage, delivery windows and item availability remain local.
Do you need to link two accounts?
The integration does not by itself establish that you must link an Instacart account or merge memberships before ordering. Start in the Skip grocery tab and follow the checkout prompts shown for your account. If the flow asks you to sign in or authorize an Instacart service, use only the current instructions displayed at checkout. Do not assume that an Instacart+ subscription automatically transfers its benefits to the embedded Skip experience; Instacart’s terms specifically exclude some embedded partner services from Instacart+ benefits.
How fees differ
Skip+ through the grocery tab
The current Skip+ offer describes a $0 delivery fee for eligible Skip+ members on qualifying orders of $35 or more through the “Groceries Powered by Instacart” tab. The $35 threshold is calculated before taxes, tips and service fees. Alcohol and other age-restricted products are excluded from the offer and do not count toward the threshold.

A waived delivery fee is not a fee-free order. Service fees, taxes and gratuities still apply, and the offer can be changed or cancelled. Confirm that the Skip+ benefit appears on the final checkout screen before placing the order.
Direct Instacart
Instacart says delivery fees vary by retailer, delivery window and order total. The delivery charge appears when you select a delivery window. Instacart+ members receive $0 delivery fees on eligible grocery orders of at least $10 per retailer, but service fees remain; members pay a reduced service fee rather than no service fee.
Service fees vary with location and cart characteristics. Tips are separate from service fees, and Instacart states that 100% of the tip goes to the shopper. A delivery-fee waiver therefore cannot be used as a proxy for the total cost of the order.

Instacart+ price in Canada
Instacart’s Canada membership page listed Instacart+ at $99 per year or $9.99 per month in 2026. The page describes $0 delivery fees on eligible orders while noting that service and other fees apply. Membership pricing, benefits and eligibility can change, so verify the current offer before subscribing.
Other possible charges
Instacart’s fee information identifies several charges that may appear depending on the order:
- Pickup orders have no service fee, although some retailers charge a pickup fee equivalent to a delivery fee.
- Long-distance, priority-delivery, bag, bottle-deposit and local-tax charges can apply to some orders.
- Priority delivery, where available, uses a shorter delivery window and may cost extra.
- Tips are optional checkout amounts separate from service fees.
The exact combination depends on your location, retailer, cart and selected window. Read every line of the order summary rather than comparing only the subtotal or delivery line.
Why the final checkout total is the only fair price comparison
Retailers set the item prices
Instacart’s terms state that retailers control pricing. Prices shown on the service may differ from in-store prices and from prices on another platform. Different storefronts can also have different prices, selection and fulfillment. The displayed price may not be the lowest price available for the same item.
Use the same basket and conditions
To compare Skip and direct Instacart without introducing unrelated differences, keep these variables identical:

- Delivery address and apartment or unit details
- Retailer and specific store, when the service lets you choose one
- Products, sizes, quantities and acceptable substitutions
- Delivery date and available time window
- Delivery priority setting
- Tip amount
Record the item subtotal, delivery fee, service fee, taxes, tips and any surcharge in each route. A lower delivery line can be offset by a higher item price or service fee, and a lower item subtotal can be offset by a long-distance or priority charge.
Keep membership costs separate
If you already pay for Skip+ or Instacart+, compare the order-level totals using the benefit you already have. If you are deciding whether to subscribe, calculate the membership cost separately from the basket and estimate how many qualifying orders you would place. Do not hide an annual or monthly subscription inside a single-order comparison.
Selection and local availability
The network figure is not address-level coverage
Instacart’s announcement cites more than 130 Canadian retail banners and over 9,000 locations. The figure indicates the scale of the announced network, but it does not tell you which stores serve a particular postal code. A retailer may be available in one neighbourhood but absent a few kilometres away, or may offer delivery at one location and pickup at another.
Catalogs can change by store and route
Even within the same banner, the live catalog can differ by store, inventory, delivery radius and fulfillment method. Retailers may also use separate storefront configurations with different prices or item availability. Search for the intended store and items in both routes instead of assuming that a national banner list represents your local assortment.
Substitutions and unavailable items
Set the same substitution preferences in both checkouts. An item appearing in search is not a guarantee that it will be on the shelf when the shopper arrives. Compare how each route presents substitutions, refunds and out-of-stock notices for your specific order. The available options can depend on the store and the live catalog.
Convenience and control
Ordering in Skip
- Open the Skip app and select the grocery tab labelled for groceries powered by Instacart.
- Enter or confirm the delivery address.
- Choose a store available for that address.
- Browse the live catalog, add products and set substitution preferences.
- Select an available delivery window and review the complete fee summary.
- Confirm the Skip+ benefit, if you are eligible, then place the order.
This route keeps the grocery entry point inside the Skip app. The partnership description says the catalog and fulfillment are powered by Instacart, so the shopper is an Instacart shopper rather than a separate Skip grocery picker.
Ordering directly in Instacart
- Open the Instacart app or website and enter the delivery address.
- Choose the retailer and store serving that address.
- Add the same products, quantities and substitution instructions used in the Skip comparison.
- Select a delivery window; the delivery fee is displayed at this stage.
- Review item prices, delivery and service fees, taxes, tips and any surcharges.
- Place the order, then use the available tracking and shopper-communication controls in the app or website.
Direct Instacart explicitly documents order tracking and communication with the shopper. The materials describing the Skip integration do not establish that every one of those controls is presented in exactly the same way in the embedded flow, so check the controls shown for your order.

Timing is location-dependent
Neither route can be declared universally faster. Delivery windows depend on the store, shopper supply, distance, order size and local demand. Priority delivery may shorten the window when offered, but it can add a charge. Compare the actual windows available for your address instead of relying on the app name.

A repeatable way to compare one order
- Fix the address. Use the same complete delivery address, including unit information, in Skip and Instacart.
- Select the same retailer. If both services show several locations, choose the same store rather than merely the same banner.
- Build an identical basket. Match product sizes, quantities and acceptable substitutions. Remove unavailable items instead of substituting a different product in only one cart.
- Choose the same service level. Select comparable delivery windows and avoid comparing priority delivery with standard delivery.
- Capture every charge. Write down subtotal, delivery fee, service fee, taxes, tip, deposits, bags and other surcharges.
- Apply the membership rule correctly. Check the Skip+ $35 qualifying minimum or Instacart+ $10-per-retailer minimum only if the order and route are eligible.
- Compare the order-level total. Choose the lower total only after confirming that the window, substitutions and retailer are acceptable.
- Evaluate the workflow. If totals are close, decide whether staying inside Skip, using Instacart’s tracking and chat, or keeping one app for all orders matters more to you.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the memberships are interchangeable
Skip+ and Instacart+ have different qualifying thresholds and route rules. Instacart’s terms say Instacart+ benefits are not available on every service, including embedded partner experiences. Verify the benefit in the checkout you are actually using.
Stopping at the advertised delivery fee
$0 delivery does not remove service fees, taxes, tips or possible surcharges. Compare the final payable amount.
Counting excluded products toward Skip’s threshold
Alcohol and other age-restricted products do not count toward Skip’s $35 qualifying amount. The threshold is measured before taxes, tips and service fees.
Comparing two different stores
A basket from one store cannot fairly establish that a route is cheaper than a basket from another. Match the retailer and location first.

Treating the national store count as a guarantee
The 130-plus-banner and 9,000-plus-location figure is a network claim from Instacart’s 2026 announcement. It does not guarantee service at your address or identical catalogs.
Assuming a promotion is permanent
The Skip+ grocery offer is subject to change or cancellation without notice. Membership prices, fees, delivery windows and eligibility can also change. Recheck the checkout and current terms when you order.
What is established—and what is not
The documented facts support a clear route and fee comparison, but not a universal winner. The sources do not provide an independent head-to-head test of speed, price, selection or satisfaction. They also do not establish that tracking and shopper communication are identical in Skip’s embedded flow and direct Instacart. Those outcomes depend on your address, store, basket, time window and account.
Official pages checked on October 13, 2026 describe the Canada-focused offers and fees. Instacart’s terms were last updated May 7, 2026. Because prices, service eligibility and promotions can change, use the current checkout as the final authority for your order.
Bottom line
Use Skip when keeping groceries inside the Skip app is more convenient and your eligible Skip+ order clears the $35 minimum. Use direct Instacart when its app gives you the retailer, delivery window or shopper controls you prefer, or when your Instacart+ benefit produces the better checkout total. For everyone else, build the same basket in both routes and compare the complete total—not just the delivery fee.
