Keeping a second Android phone can make sense when it has a clear job—especially if you want a firm boundary between work and personal life. But two phones are not for everybody: Android’s Work Profile and dual-SIM options can meet some of the same needs on one device, and an old phone is worth keeping only if it is suitable for the role you have in mind.
1. Put work and personal life on separate devices
A second handset gives you a device-level divide: one phone can be for work and the other for personal use. That may appeal if a separation between work apps and personal activity on the same screen does not feel sufficient.

Google Android Enterprise reports that a Qualtrics survey of more than 3,000 smartphone users around the world found 68% used one smartphone for both work and personal purposes, while 32% used two. Google also says 70% preferred a phone interface that clearly separates work and personal apps and data. These are figures from Google’s account of that survey, whose publication date is not shown in the search result; they are not a current estimate of all phone owners, and the two-phone group did not necessarily use one handset only for work and the other only for personal use.
2. Keep a phone for a distinct role you actually need
A previous phone might serve as a second-number device or another dedicated handset. Those can be reasonable personal uses, but they are reasons to keep a phone only if the role matters enough to justify maintaining another device. The available evidence does not establish that a second phone is a more reliable backup, improves security or battery life, or produces a particular productivity benefit.

Before keeping an old handset, check that its physical condition, software support and carrier compatibility suit the job. Support varies by model, so consult the manufacturer’s current support information rather than assuming an older Android phone remains suitable. If you are considering a specific used Android smartphone, compare its condition, carrier compatibility and remaining security support against the cost of acquiring and maintaining it.
3. Choose two devices when one-device separation falls short
Two phones are most compelling when you specifically value having work and personal activity on separate hardware, or when your use case is not addressed by one-device features. If your goal is only to separate managed work apps or use two numbers, a single phone may be enough.

Work Profile: separate work apps and data
Android Work Profile separates work apps and data from personal apps and data on one device. Google explains: “To separate your work apps and data from your personal ones, set up a Work Profile on your Android device.” It also says the organization manages work apps and data while personal apps and data remain private. This is a useful alternative when the need is specifically a boundary between managed work and personal information, not a separate handset.

Dual SIM lets a compatible phone use two SIMs, and Google Store identifies separate work and personal calls as one possible use. Whether it works as intended depends on the phone and carrier, so confirm compatibility and setup before relying on it.

Before you keep, trade in or recycle an old phone
Make the decision based on a concrete role, not on the idea that every old phone should be retained. If the phone has no use for you, trade-in or recycling remains a reasonable choice. Google advises copying data before clearing or resetting a device, and Google Store warns against sending a device with a damaged or swollen battery.
- Choose the job first. Decide whether the phone is for work separation, a second number, backup or another specific use. If you only need work/personal app separation or two numbers, assess Work Profile or dual SIM before retaining a second handset.
- Check suitability. Confirm that the phone works with the intended carrier or SIM, is in suitable condition, and still receives software support appropriate to its role.
- Prepare for transfer. Charge both phones, unlock the old one and make a backup. Google’s setup instructions describe copying data during setup and recommend a cable transfer where available; confirm the devices’ ports and transfer methods are compatible.
- Verify before wiping. Check that important data arrived on the new device before clearing the old one. Some app data and settings may not copy, depending on the app, device and Android version.
- Reset only after checking. If trading in or recycling, follow the device maker’s or carrier’s instructions to clear data and factory-reset the phone. Do not send a device with a damaged or swollen battery to Google Store trade-in.
Google’s January 26, 2026 Android Developers’ Blog article about Android 16 trade-in mode reports a GSMA estimate that secondhand phones have around 80–90% lower carbon emissions than new phones. That is Google’s report of the estimate; the underlying methodology was not independently examined here, so it should not be treated as a quantified environmental result for any particular keep, trade-in or recycling decision.
