It is a tournament platform for mobile games made by third-party developers. Free-to-enter and virtual-currency play is distinct from cash-entry contests, whose availability depends on the player’s location and the specific game. Skillz’s June 23, 2026 guidance lists five U.S. states where cash competitions are unavailable, plus restrictions for certain game types elsewhere.
What is Skillz?
Skillz provides tournament technology used in mobile games; independent developers create the games themselves. Skillz describes its platform as offering both free-to-enter tournaments and competitions for real prizes. Its explanation of the platform is available in What is Skillz?, updated April 17, 2025.

Are Skillz games free?
Skillz says its games are free to download and can be played using virtual currency called Z. That does not mean every tournament is free: some game modes require a cash entry fee to compete for real prizes. Check the entry terms for the particular game and tournament rather than treating a free download as a promise of free play in every mode. Skillz explains the distinction in Are Skillz Games Free?, updated November 19, 2024.
Is Skillz legal to play in the United States?
There is no single answer for every player or every game. Skillz says U.S. legality for skill-based competitions is determined at the state level. Courts may consider whether skill or chance predominates, or whether chance is a material element, when analyzing a game. Skillz says its contest outcomes are intended to be determined by player skill, but that description reflects the company’s position about its own platform, not an independent legal ruling for a particular game or player.

In its June 23, 2026 legality guidance, Skillz states: “In the U.S., the legality of skill-based competitions is determined at a state level and Skillz has taken extensive measures to ensure that its products are in full compliance with all the applicable laws.” This is Skillz’s statement, not a regulator’s finding or individualized legal advice.
Skillz’s FY2025 Form 10-K, filed April 1, 2026, says the company enables paid-entry contests only in jurisdictions where skill-based gaming is permitted and does not need to be licensed as gambling under applicable law. The filing also warns that the industry could face greater scrutiny and regulation and that laws may be interpreted to cover the games or their entry fees. Read the company’s policy alongside that disclosed uncertainty; neither determines how local law applies to your circumstances. Skillz FY2025 Form 10-K.

Where are cash competitions available?
As of its June 23, 2026 guidance, Skillz says real-prize competitions are available in 45 U.S. states, excluding Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana, and South Dakota. It also lists game-specific limits: real-prize card games are unavailable in Maine and Indiana, and domino-based play is unavailable in New Jersey. The 45-state figure and restrictions are Skillz’s published availability claims, not an independent count of jurisdictions where a regulator or court has approved the contests.
Skillz’s eligibility guidance, updated July 5, 2026, says cash competitors must be at least 18 and have device location settings enabled. The article also gives international and Australia-specific limitations; eligibility outside the U.S. therefore needs its own current location check rather than an assumption based on the U.S. list.

- Redeemable at US GameStop, EB Games, Babbage's, Electronic Boutique, EBX, Planet X, and Software Etc. stores. Also redeemable online at and GameStop.com and EBGames.com.
- Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
- GameStop. Power to the Players.
- Redemption: Instore and Online
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Availability can differ by game and change over time. Before paying an entry fee, check the game’s in-app eligibility and the current rules where you are. Skillz’s location determination is useful for understanding its own access rules, but it is not a substitute for assessing local law.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse cash tournaments with social-casino play
Skillz publishes separate location restrictions for its social-casino product. Its page, Can I play from anywhere? (updated July 1, 2025), lists Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, South Carolina, and West Virginia as restricted for that product. The page also distinguishes Ticketz-based play from Z play, which may remain available in some places. These are product-specific social-casino rules, not the cash-contest availability list.

What this means if you are deciding whether to play
- Want to avoid paying an entry fee? Look for free-to-enter tournaments or play with Z, and verify the terms before joining.
- Considering a cash contest? Confirm you meet the age requirement, enable location settings, and check whether that specific game and mode are available where you are.
- Expecting to make money? Do not treat a real-prize tournament as a reliable way to earn income. The cited official materials do not establish typical player earnings or returns.
- Need a legal answer for your situation? Skillz’s availability rules describe what the company allows on its platform; they do not resolve every question under local law.
