Choose Skateboard Knight if you want compact, lane-based combat, automatic attacks and run-to-run decisions from random upgrades. This comparison reflects a Tokyo Game Show 2026 hands-on preview published October 10, 2026, plus PLAYISM’s October 8 demo announcement. It is a comparison of demonstrated builds, not a review of either finished game.

The short answer: pick the loop you want to repeat
These games are not two versions of the same formula. Skateboard Knight is built around immediate combat: move a knight between three horizontal lanes, let the character automatically slash enemies approaching on that lane, collect what they drop, choose upgrades and push through increasingly dense waves toward a boss. Its structure resembles an action roguelite more than a traditional, menu-heavy role-playing game.

Sea Sniffers begins from the opposite direction. You talk to characters on land, accept a request for particular fish or items, send a seal into the water, explore a side-scrolling area and use a net to catch fish. You return with the requested items, claim rewards, purchase upgrades and gradually gain access to more areas. Some catches involve combat, but discovery and collection are the organizing ideas.

Skateboard Knight: survive lanes, then make a build
In the demo described by RPG Site contributor Kite Stenbuck after trying the game at PLAYISM’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 booth, the knight rides along three horizontal lanes. You move up or down between them while enemies approach. The knight automatically slashes enemies on the same lane, so your main input is positioning rather than aiming every individual strike.

Staying on a lane can let the automatic attack handle an approaching enemy, but defeated enemies leave money and experience on that lane. Moving to a different lane may avoid danger or line up the next target, yet it can also leave rewards uncollected. The preview specifically notes that remaining in position can matter when you want to gather those drops.
Experience produces the game’s most important choice point. At each level, the demo presents three random buffs and you select one. The preview mentions straightforward stat increases as well as bonus skills, including additional elemental attacks. Because the options are random, a run is shaped by what appears rather than by a fully planned character sheet. A build that starts with one kind of enhancement may be pushed in another direction by later offers.
Enemy waves increase in number before a stage boss. Defeating that boss lets the knight move on to another area, giving the run a clear sequence: enter a space, manage lanes and drops, strengthen the character, endure the escalation and win the boss encounter. The preview did not establish how many areas the finished game will contain or how long a complete run will last.

Sea Sniffers: accept a request, explore, catch and return
Stenbuck’s preview characterizes Sea Sniffers as a 2D side-scrolling fishing action RPG. The initial loop starts on land, where you speak with non-player characters and receive objectives such as catching a specified fish. You then send a seal into the sea and explore within the reel’s current maximum length.
Fishing is an active action rather than a passive timer. You use a net to catch fish, and the preview observed that rarer fish required more effort. Some catches also involve combat, so the underwater trip is not entirely peaceful collecting. The exact combat rules, enemy variety and difficulty curve were not established by the short beginning section of the demo.
Newly caught species are recorded in a collection dex. When you end an exploration session, you can call the seal back, deliver quest items, receive rewards and buy upgrades. The preview says that areas gradually unlock as progression continues. It also suggests that the reel’s range can be upgraded, but the writer explicitly treated that as an assumption based on the early demo rather than a confirmed final mechanic. Read that as a possibility, not a promised system.
The result is a loop with a return-to-hub cadence: prepare on land, make an underwater trip, decide whether you have fulfilled the objective, then come back to convert catches into progress. It should appeal to players who enjoy completing requests and filling out a catalogue as much as the moment-to-moment action.

Choose Skateboard Knight if these priorities sound like yours
You want action immediately
There is little setup between entering a stage and making meaningful decisions. Enemies approach, you change lanes, the automatic slash resolves attacks and drops appear. If you prefer a game that communicates its challenge through movement and timing instead of dialogue and errands, this is the clearer fit.

The three-choice level-up system means you cannot assume the same enhancement will appear every time. Random stat buffs and bonus skills encourage adaptation: you evaluate the options on offer and choose the one that best serves the current run. That is the defining roguelite-style decision in the demonstrated build.

You like compact arenas and visible escalation
Three lanes make the battlefield easy to read, while increasing enemy counts provide a direct escalation before each boss. The format concentrates attention on where the knight is standing, what is approaching and whether moving away will cost you money or experience.
You want to try something now, subject to listing changes
The October 10 preview reported a public Steam demo reaching Chapter 4, and PLAYISM separately announced the demo on October 8, 2026. That is a dated status report, not a guarantee that the same build or regional availability remains unchanged. Check the current official store listing before planning a purchase or download.
Choose Sea Sniffers if these priorities sound like yours
You prefer exploration to wave survival
The central question is not whether you can endure the next group of enemies. It is what you will find underwater, whether you can catch the requested species and when to return. That makes the game a better match for players who find discovery and completion more satisfying than a score-like combat push.

You enjoy collections with a concrete purpose
The fish dex gives catches a persistent record, while quests give particular species an immediate use. A rare fish is not merely a number on a results screen: it can fill a collection entry, satisfy an NPC request or contribute to the currency and upgrade cycle described in the preview.
You like returning to a hub to convert progress
Sea Sniffers separates an expedition from its rewards. You leave land, explore, catch and then call the seal back to deliver items, collect rewards and buy upgrades. Players who enjoy preparing for the next trip may find this cadence more appealing than Skateboard Knight’s uninterrupted stage combat.
You are comfortable waiting for access information
No public demo was reported for Sea Sniffers in the October 10 preview. The game was listed for a planned 2027 PC release through Steam, but neither a firm date nor current availability was established. If you need something playable immediately, the evidence currently favors the other game.

How progression changes the feel of each game
Random power versus planned improvement
Skateboard Knight places its key choice inside the run. Each level offers three random buffs, so improvement is partly a response to chance. The immediate payoff is a stronger attack pattern or statistic; the trade-off is less control over the exact route your build takes.
Sea Sniffers places more of its demonstrated progression between trips. Catching fish expands the dex, turning in objectives produces rewards and purchases improve future expeditions. The preview did not publish a full upgrade tree, prices or exact effects, so it would be premature to describe the system as deep crafting, equipment management or a specific economy.
Combat pressure versus expedition planning
In Skateboard Knight, pressure is visible in the growing number of enemies and the approach of a boss. Positioning has two jobs at once: it determines which enemies the automatic slash can reach and whether you are in place to collect their drops.
In Sea Sniffers, pressure appears to come from the demands of an excursion: reaching the target area, making difficult catches and deciding when to return. The preview confirms that rarer fish take more effort and that some catches involve combat, but it does not document a timer, an oxygen meter or a failure penalty. Do not assume those systems exist.

Availability is the most concrete practical difference in the dated material. The hands-on report, published October 10, 2026, said the newer public Skateboard Knight Steam demo could be played through Chapter 4. PLAYISM’s official site had announced that demo on October 8 as part of a three-demo announcement. The same report said Sea Sniffers had no public demo at that time.
Both games were presented with 2027 plans, but the platform lists differ. Skateboard Knight was listed for PC, iOS and Android. Sea Sniffers was listed for PC via Steam. The preview provided no day, month or final pricing for either title. “2027” should therefore be read as a target window rather than a guaranteed launch commitment.
The available preview material also does not establish:
- Final purchase prices, regional pricing or monetization.
- Whether either game will include downloadable content, ads, optional purchases or a subscription.
- Full-game length, replay value beyond the demonstrated loops or endgame systems.
- Save behavior, controller support, keyboard-and-mouse options or accessibility features.
- Exact hardware requirements for PC or device requirements for iOS and Android.
- A verified comparative difficulty level, performance test or review score.
Those omissions matter because a demo can show the shape of a game without answering the practical questions that determine whether the finished release suits your setup.
A decision checklist before you choose
- Identify your preferred first five minutes. If you want to dodge between lanes and cut through a wave, start with Skateboard Knight. If you would rather speak to an NPC and set out to find a fish, Sea Sniffers matches that opening.
- Decide how much randomness you want. Skateboard Knight’s level-ups present three random buffs. Sea Sniffers’ demonstrated progress is tied to catches, quests, rewards and upgrades.
- Choose your desired sense of completion. Boss victories and a successful move to the next area define progress in Skateboard Knight. A filled dex entry, a delivered quest item or a newly accessible area defines progress in Sea Sniffers.
- Check your platform. The dated plan includes PC for both, mobile devices for Skateboard Knight and no announced mobile version for Sea Sniffers. Confirm current listings because platform plans can change.
- Check live demo status. The Skateboard Knight demo was reported publicly available through Chapter 4 on October 10, 2026; Sea Sniffers had no public demo in that report. Store pages may have changed since then.
- Wait for confirmed commercial details if they decide the purchase. Neither the price nor the final monetization model was established in the preview.
What the early preview can—and cannot—tell you
The strongest evidence here is observational: a reporter played both demonstrations at Tokyo Game Show 2026 and described the mechanics encountered. That is enough to distinguish their loops, but not enough to judge the complete games. The Skateboard Knight account covers a demo through Chapter 4, while the Sea Sniffers account covers only the beginning of its show-floor demo.

The preview writer’s genre impressions are useful signposts, not objective classifications. Calling Skateboard Knight an action roguelite highlights its waves, bosses and random buffs. Calling Sea Sniffers a fishing action RPG highlights its net-catching, quest and collection systems. Neither label promises a particular feature set beyond what the demonstrated build showed.
Verdict
For a player choosing on mechanics alone, Skateboard Knight is the better match for fast, repeatable combat decisions: three lanes, automatic attacks, drop collection, random buffs and boss-led stage progression. Its reported public demo also makes it the more immediately testable option as of the October 10, 2026 preview.
Sea Sniffers is the better match for an exploratory, collection-driven routine: accept a quest on land, send the seal underwater, work for fish with a net, record new species, return for rewards and buy upgrades. It is the more distinctive choice if fishing and gradual area discovery are what you want from a casual RPG.
