Neither company is an automatic winner: SK hynix is the more direct way to invest in memory, while Samsung Electronics combines memory with a broader semiconductor and electronics business. Both reported strong AI-memory progress in Q2 2026, but recent operating results do not show which stock offers better value. That depends on each security’s current price, cycle-normalized earnings, investment needs, shareholder returns and the share class available to you.
First separate the company from the stock
A company can have stronger recent results yet be the less attractive investment if its share price already reflects those results. Conversely, a diversified company may appeal to investors who want memory exposure without relying on memory alone. To decide between SK hynix and Samsung Electronics, weigh business exposure and execution alongside valuation, financial resilience and the memory cycle.

The latest results covered here are for Q2 2026: SK hynix published its release on July 29, and Samsung Electronics on July 30. The figures are company-reported, and SK hynix describes its Q2 financial results as preliminary. Neither release is an independent assessment of future performance.

How directly does each company represent a memory investment?
SK hynix: more concentrated memory exposure
SK hynix is a DRAM and NAND supplier. Its Q2 release highlighted high-bandwidth memory (HBM), AI-server DRAM and enterprise SSD sales. That makes it the more direct fit for an investment thesis centered on memory demand, but also ties the investment more closely to memory pricing, customer demand and capacity cycles.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Samsung Electronics: memory inside a diversified business
Samsung Electronics reports results across a broader company. Its Device Solutions division includes the Memory Business, but consolidated revenue and profit should not be read as memory-only results. The wider business mix can make Samsung a less concentrated way to express a memory view; it also means company-wide results reflect influences beyond memory.
What did the companies report about AI memory?
Both companies described progress in HBM and demand associated with AI infrastructure. Their statements are useful evidence of each issuer’s reported activity and outlook, not independent proof of market share, customer wins or which company will earn more in the future.
- SK hynix: The company said HBM4 mass shipments began in Q2 2026, HBM4E samples shipped in the first half of 2026, and long-term agreements had been finalized with around 10 customers. It also said demand exceeded its supply capacity.
- Samsung Electronics: The company reported record Memory results, scaled HBM4 sales and HBM4E sample shipments to major customers. Samsung said its Memory Business expected robust server demand, citing continued AI infrastructure investment and broader adoption of agentic AI; that is management’s outlook, not a guaranteed result.
These milestones show that both companies are pursuing AI-related memory demand. They do not, by themselves, establish which has the stronger competitive position or which stock is cheaper.

The companies’ consolidated figures are not like-for-like: Samsung’s totals cover a broader business mix, whereas SK hynix is a more focused memory supplier. Samsung’s Device Solutions division is a more relevant segment reference, but it still should not be treated as a direct match for SK hynix’s company-wide results.

| Q2 2026 measure | SK hynix | Samsung Electronics |
|---|---|---|
| Company-wide revenue | KRW 79.3187 trillion | KRW 171.5 trillion |
| Company-wide operating profit | KRW 60.5426 trillion | KRW 89.5 trillion |
| Operating margin | 76% (calculated in SK hynix’s release) | Not stated in the cited Q2 results |
| Device Solutions division revenue and operating profit | Not applicable as a separately reported division in these figures | KRW 127.5 trillion revenue; KRW 89.2 trillion operating profit |
SK hynix identifies its Q2 financial figures as K-IFRS and preliminary as of July 29, 2026. The table compares reported results for the same quarter, not normalized earnings across a full memory cycle. A very high quarterly margin can reflect unusually favorable conditions; it is not a sound standalone forecast of future margins.
What do cash, capacity and the memory cycle tell investors?
Financial flexibility
SK hynix reported Q2-end cash and equivalents of KRW 88 trillion, total debt of KRW 18.6 trillion and net cash of KRW 69.4 trillion. The available figures do not establish a matching balance-sheet comparison with Samsung, so they cannot support a conclusion that one company is relatively safer or more financially flexible.
Capacity and investment discipline
SK hynix said it was accelerating M15X and developing its Yongin site. It also said longer-term plans would be phased according to customer demand and investment efficiency. Samsung said supply constraints were expected to persist despite production increases, and described robust second-half server demand while acknowledging potential moderation in mobile and PC demand.
Memory shortages can support strong earnings, but high returns may encourage capacity additions across the industry. If supply later catches up with or exceeds demand, pricing and utilization can weaken. Investors should therefore examine investment spending, the timing of new capacity, utilization and pricing through less favorable periods—not simply extrapolate a peak quarter.

What would settle which stock is better value?
The available company results do not provide a comparable, current valuation snapshot or a like-for-like shareholder-return comparison. A stock-level choice needs both. Compare the actual securities at the same date and in a consistent currency; distinguish trailing, current-year and cycle-normalized earnings; and account for share class, receipt ratios and currency when comparing different listings.
- Use current market prices and the share counts relevant to the security being assessed.
- Compare valuation against earnings assumptions that reflect a full memory cycle, rather than treating Q2 2026 margins as permanent.
- Review capital spending and balance-sheet commitments alongside projected earnings.
- Assess dividends, buybacks and other shareholder-return policies using comparable current disclosures.
- Confirm the exact instrument, trading currency, fees and tax treatment for your location.
SK hynix says its common shares trade on KRX, ADSs on Nasdaq and GDSs in Luxembourg. These are different forms of access; a quoted price for one should not be compared directly with another company’s ordinary shares without accounting for the relevant receipt ratio and currency. Samsung’s reviewed investor-relations material links to stock information, but the cited sources do not establish a comparable listing breakdown here.
Which investor might prefer each company?
- Consider SK hynix if your thesis is specifically about memory demand and you are comfortable with the greater concentration that comes with a focused supplier. Its reported HBM progress, customer agreements and net cash are relevant company disclosures, not guarantees of future earnings or stock returns.
- Consider Samsung Electronics if you want memory exposure within a broader company and are willing to assess the effects of its other businesses as well. Its reported Memory results and HBM progress are important, but consolidated performance is not a pure measure of memory conditions.
- Wait for a valuation comparison if your decision depends on which stock is cheaper or has higher expected returns. The reported operating results alone cannot answer that question.
Samsung’s investor-relations page listed its Q3 2026 earnings call for October 29, 2026, after the date of the Q2 results considered here. New results, pricing, guidance and product qualifications can change the comparison.
