The SK hynix Platinum P41 is a fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD with strong manufacturer-rated endurance and a five-year warranty. Its main drawbacks are that it ships without a heatsink and can run hot under load. It is worth considering for a compatible PC or PS5 expansion, provided you verify fit, cooling, and today’s price before buying.
What the Platinum P41 offers
The P41 is a single-sided M.2 2280 NVMe SSD using PCIe 4.0 with up to four lanes and SK hynix 176-layer 3D TLC NAND. SK hynix lists capacities of 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Its published speed and endurance figures differ by capacity:

| Capacity | Sequential read, up to | Sequential write, up to | Random IOPS, up to | Endurance rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500GB | 7,000 MB/s | 4,700 MB/s | 960K read; 1,000K write | 500 TBW |
| 1TB | 7,000 MB/s | 6,500 MB/s | 1,400K read; 1,300K write | 750 TBW |
| 2TB | 7,000 MB/s | 6,500 MB/s | 1,400K read; 1,300K write | 1,200 TBW |
These are SK hynix’s maximum specifications, not guaranteed results in every computer or workload. Host support, workload, thermals, drive state, and configuration all affect real performance. The 500GB model has a lower rated sequential-write ceiling than the 1TB and 2TB models.
SK hynix also lists a 1.5-million-hour MTBF, an operating temperature range of 0°C to 70°C, AES 256-bit encryption and TCG Pyrite support, plus SMART and TRIM. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of an individual drive. The product page lists a five-year warranty; check the applicable regional terms and seller. - COMPATIBILITY: Internal SSD designed for seamless integration with systems supporting 2.5-inch SATA storage devices.
The main advantages
High rated PCIe 4.0 speeds
The 1TB and 2TB models are rated for sequential reads up to 7,000 MB/s and writes up to 6,500 MB/s. Those figures make the P41 a high-performance option on paper for systems that can use a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive. The 500GB version’s maximum rated write speed is 4,700 MB/s.
High published endurance
SK hynix rates the 2TB drive at 1,200 TBW, the 1TB at 750 TBW, and the 500GB at 500 TBW. TBW is the manufacturer’s stated total bytes written endurance rating; it is not a promise that a drive will fail when that figure is reached.
Positive independent performance assessment
In its review, Tom’s Hardware praised the drive’s performance and power efficiency, while also raising thermal concerns. That is the publication’s test finding and should not be treated as a guarantee for every PC or workload. Tom’s Hardware review

No included heatsink
The drive does not include a heatsink, and heat under load is a concern identified by Tom’s Hardware. A motherboard’s M.2 cover or a compatible separate heatsink may help, but confirm it fits the system and its thermal design rather than assuming any cover is suitable.
PS5 installation calls for a cooling check
Windows Central reports that the P41 can work as PS5 expansion storage and recommends adding a heatsink. Before installing, verify the console’s current expansion requirements and that the heatsink fits the drive bay. Windows Central review

- Its M.2 slot supports NVMe, rather than only SATA.
- The slot supports PCIe 4.0 if you expect the drive’s highest rated performance; a slower compatible interface may limit speeds.
- The single-sided 2280 drive fits the available space and any laptop-specific constraints.
- The system has suitable cooling, including clearance for its M.2 cover or an added heatsink.
For PS5 use, check the console’s current expansion guidance and heatsink clearance in addition to confirming fit.
Which capacity should you choose?
- 500GB: Consider it if capacity needs and budget are modest. Its manufacturer-rated sequential write maximum is lower than those of the larger versions.
- 1TB: It has the same published sequential maximums as the 2TB model, with a lower endurance rating.
- 2TB: It has the highest listed TBW rating and the same published sequential maximums as the 1TB model. Whether it is better value depends on the current price difference.

Is the SK hynix Platinum P41 worth it?
It can be a good fit when you need a fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, your system supports M.2 2280 NVMe, and you can provide adequate cooling. Its published speed, endurance, and warranty are appealing, but the lack of an included heatsink matters—especially for systems with limited thermal management. Make the final call using current capacity-specific pricing and your device’s compatibility requirements, not the historical launch price or maximum speed figures alone.
