Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind Beginner’s Guide to Managing Your Clan

In Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind, your first job is to keep the clan fed while turning a newly migrated settlement into a resilient Hyaloring community. Use each season’s two available actions deliberately, sow and harvest on the right calendar, maintain enough livestock and wealth to absorb shocks, and let exploration, trade, ritual, diplomacy, and defense grow from those fundamentals. There is no guaranteed winning build: the game’s story events can reward or punish decisions years after you make them.

What you are managing

Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind is a storybook strategy and role-playing game set in Glorantha. You lead the Riders clan through resource management, negotiations, exploration, rituals, and more than 400 interactive story scenes, according to the Steam listing. Its central challenge is not simply conquering a map. You are trying to keep a people, their animals, their relationships, and their traditions alive while the world changes around them.

The official Six Ages manual describes decisions whose effects may be immediate or may not appear for decades. That makes a useful opening principle: choose actions that leave the clan more capable of handling the next problem, not actions that merely look profitable this season.

The first years: establish a functioning settlement

Your clan has just migrated. Fields and pastures still need clearing, and quickly built houses need finishing. The manual says this work can take several years of successful ventures. Treat the opening as a settlement phase rather than a race to raid or expand.

Reorganize the clan circle

The clan circle is your group of seven leaders. The manual suggests considering a reorganization at the start. Put leaders with useful skills and compatible temperaments into roles where their advice and challenge abilities matter most. A leader who is excellent at one task may still give poor strategic advice if personal goals or personality pull in another direction, so do not treat the circle as a set-and-forget menu.

Use the starting shrine as a foundation

On an easier difficulty, the game starts you with a food-producing shrine. The manual says you will probably want more than one. That is not a promise of automatic safety: shrines and blessings supplement ordinary production, while the clan still has to schedule farm work, protect its herds, and respond to events.

Do not spend every early action on expansion

Early ventures can help complete settlement work, but a failed venture can consume time or resources. Before committing, check whether the clan can survive a poor result. If stores are low or a harvest is approaching, a conservative action that protects production may be worth more than a speculative opportunity.

Learn the seasonal economy before you spend actions

The game allows two player-initiated actions per season. You can advance time with the season button when no useful action remains, but the two-action limit makes timing important.

Season Key agricultural timing Beginner implication
Sea Farmers sow crops. Protect farmers and avoid commitments that remove needed labor during sowing.
Fire The manual does not identify a single universal farm task for this guide. Use the season to address current shortages, relations, exploration, rituals, or defense rather than following a fixed script.
Earth The harvest is added to your food stores. Plan around the harvest’s expected contribution and do not assume it will cover every demand.
Dark The manual’s core warning still applies: stores and labor must carry the clan through the next cycle. Review reserves, health, herd condition, and threats before committing to risky ventures.

Food stockpiled for more than a year spoils. Large reserves can therefore buy time, but they are not a permanent answer to production problems. A successful opening alternates between producing food, preserving the capacity to produce it, and using surplus before it deteriorates.

Food security is the non-negotiable priority

The manual is explicit about the consequence chain: insufficient food makes people hungry, then sick, and eventually dead; clan mood also suffers. Its bluntest warning is, “You can’t win if your clan starves.” That sentence appears in the official manual, linked above, and is the right standard for evaluating every early decision.

Read the food situation, not just the current number

  • Check current stores and the game’s warnings about shortages.
  • Look at the season and whether sowing or harvest is imminent.
  • Account for people, livestock, planned ventures, and possible losses from an event.
  • Keep enough flexibility to respond if a ritual, expedition, or negotiation consumes labor or goods.

A large number in storage is less reassuring if the next harvest is weak, the herd is declining, or an action is likely to consume workers. Conversely, a smaller reserve can be manageable when production is healthy and the next harvest is close.

Combine ordinary production with magic and foraging

Regular production alone is inadequate in the changing world represented by the game. Learn useful blessings and establish food-producing magic where possible. Foraging missions and successful ventures can supplement regular output. These are supports for a functioning agricultural base, not replacements for it.

Use storage as a bridge

Because food spoils after a year, store enough to bridge bad seasons or emergencies rather than assuming that hoarding indefinitely is optimal. If a stockpile is approaching its spoilage window, consider whether the clan can convert it into security through a planned venture, gifts, or another action instead of allowing it to disappear unused.

Make the clan circle work for you

Seven leaders advise the player and participate in challenges. Higher skills generally produce better advice, but the manual cautions that personalities and agendas influence recommendations. Treat advice as informed input, then compare it with the clan’s actual reserves and priorities.

Skill What it helps with Questions to ask when advice conflicts
Food Knowledge of animals, crops, and wild plants. Does the recommendation protect the next sowing or harvest?
Bargaining Economic negotiation. What goods, livestock, or future leverage are being exchanged?
Diplomacy Dealing with outsiders. Could this improve relations, create an alliance, or provoke a neighbor?
Combat Supporting warriors. What is the objective, force size, and likely cost if the result is poor?
Leadership The chief’s effectiveness, including some negotiations and battles. Does the chief have enough authority and support for the proposed action?

A practical way to use recommendations

  1. Identify the decision’s dominant skill. A trade negotiation and a battle should not be judged by the same leader’s specialty.
  2. Compare the strongest and weakest advice. A high-skill recommendation is useful evidence, not an infallible command.
  3. Check the adviser’s incentives and personality. A leader may favor a course that advances a personal or factional agenda.
  4. Ask what happens if the action fails. If failure risks food, key livestock, or the settlement itself, wait for a safer window when possible.

Build reserves beyond the food pile

Livestock is both production and emergency capacity

The manual treats herds as an important reserve for crises and opportunities and says a clan needs about as many herds as people. This is a description of the game’s economy, not a universal optimal threshold for every run: losses, fertility, food availability, and events can change what is sensible. A prosperous Riders clan is also described as having enough horses for every adult to ride. Use that as a cultural and economic benchmark, not as a command to buy horses before food is secure.

When deciding whether to spend, sell, or risk animals, consider what the herd enables: mobility, wealth, exchanges, and resilience after a bad event. A short-term gain that leaves too few animals to recover can make later seasons harder.

Understand the game’s wealth model

Clan wealth includes valuable goods, livestock, food, magical treasures, trade routes, and the clan market. The manual’s conversions are useful for interpreting the scale of a transaction:

Asset Manual valuation How to read it
One good Worth one cow. A small unit of exchange in the clan’s internal wealth model.
One horse Worth four cows. A high-value asset whose loss or sale can materially change your reserves.

Do not reduce wealth to a single number. Food can spoil, animals can be lost, magical treasures may unlock options, and trade routes can create continuing value. A balanced reserve is safer than concentrating everything in one category.

Use trade and relationships to widen your options

Open the Relations screen to learn about neighbors before you need something from them. Gifts can improve a relationship, while alliances can provide security or opportunities. The manual notes that wealth or military strength can make your clan a more appealing ally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the right reason to contact a neighbor

  • Immediate shortage: seek an exchange that protects food or critical livestock without destroying your future capacity.
  • Long-term security: cultivate a relationship before a crisis makes your request look desperate.
  • Strategic opportunity: evaluate whether a trade route or alliance offsets its obligations and risks.

Diplomacy and Bargaining answer different parts of the problem. Diplomacy helps you deal with outsiders; Bargaining helps with the economic terms. A favorable price is not necessarily a favorable relationship, and a friendly relationship does not guarantee a good exchange.

Explore deliberately, not recklessly

Exploration can reveal useful places and make the valley safer. The manual recommends exploring your clan lands and warns that failing to explore can allow bandit or monster threats to increase. Encounters and outcomes depend on the game’s simulation, so exploration is not a guaranteed source of treasure.

When an expedition is sensible

  • The clan can absorb a failed result without losing its ability to sow, harvest, or defend itself.
  • You have a clear reason to explore: learning about the valley, reducing a threat, or seeking a resource.
  • The selected leaders have relevant skills and the timing does not remove essential agricultural labor.

Exploration and defense reinforce each other. Information can prevent surprises, while a safer valley protects the production that makes future expeditions possible.

Keep a defense that protects the settlement

Maintain enough Swords to respond to danger. The manual describes fortifications as a way to reduce losses in some situations. This does not make every fight safe: magic, rituals, leader qualifications, force size, and the chosen objective can all affect a battle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat raiding as guaranteed income

Raiding can produce gains, but timing it while crops need attention can damage the harvest. Before sending people away, check who is needed for farm work and what the clan stands to lose if the action fails. A successful raid that causes a poor harvest may still weaken the clan overall.

Evaluate a battle by its objective

The same force can face different odds depending on whether it is defending, pursuing a limited target, or attempting a more ambitious objective. Consider the likely losses, the political consequences, and the opportunity cost of removing leaders or workers from other duties. Use Combat skill and Leadership advice, but keep the final choice tied to your reserves and the season.

Use rituals and shrines as capacity, not shortcuts

Food-producing blessings and other magic can supplement regular production. Useful blessings, shrines, and temples also help the clan respond to opportunities and crises. The manual presents magic as part of the economy and the clan’s relationship with the world, not as a button that erases scarcity.

When choosing a ritual, ask what problem it solves and when the benefit arrives. A blessing that supports the next harvest may be more valuable than one that creates a small immediate gain while leaving the underlying shortage untouched. Include the cost, the required leaders, and the possibility that an action’s consequences may appear much later.

A repeatable decision loop for every season

  1. Check survival: review food, health, mood, herd condition, and warnings.
  2. Identify the calendar pressure: note whether sowing, harvest, or another labor-intensive task is near.
  3. Protect production: avoid actions that remove essential workers or animals unless the payoff justifies the risk.
  4. Spend the first action on the largest bottleneck: food production, a necessary settlement improvement, or a threat that will otherwise grow.
  5. Recalculate after the result: an event may change stores, relationships, or available leaders.
  6. Use the second action for capacity: consider trade, exploration, a blessing, relations, or defense when the clan can afford it.
  7. Advance time only when no useful action remains: do not click through a season while an urgent shortage or opportunity is visible.

This loop is intentionally flexible. The game’s simulation can make a fixed “first five years” script unreliable, while the underlying priorities remain stable.

Difficulty settings and optional community help

The Steam listing confirms multiple difficulty levels. The manual specifically says that Easier difficulty begins with a food-producing shrine; the reviewed sources do not document the exact effects of every setting, so there is no reliable complete difficulty matrix to reproduce here. Choose an easier setting if you want more room to learn seasonal timing and the clan circle, and increase the challenge once you can recover from a poor harvest without panic.

For extra reading, the Steam Community guides index lists focused guides on food, exploration, combat, clan creation, and a season-by-season five-year guide titled “First Things First: the Food, the Defense, the Wealth.” These are optional player references, not official rules or guaranteed strategies. The index identifies topics and titles; it does not independently verify every recommendation inside each guide.

Common failure patterns and recovery choices

“I have food now, so I can spend freely.”

Food spoils after a year, and the next harvest may be weak. Use the reserve to protect the production cycle, not to justify a chain of unrelated risks. Secure sowing, maintain workers and animals, and spend surplus before it deteriorates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The best adviser said it was safe.”

Skill improves advice, but personality and agenda still matter. Recheck the recommendation against reserves, season, and the consequences of failure. If the action threatens food or settlement capacity, delay it until the downside is survivable.

“Exploration only costs me resources.”

Exploration has risk, but ignoring your lands can let bandit or monster threats increase. Choose a timing window in which a failed expedition will not compromise sowing, harvest, or basic defense.

“A bigger army solves every problem.”

Swords and fortifications improve your options, but battles remain uncertain and can consume workers, wealth, and relationships. Match the force and objective to the threat instead of raiding whenever troops are available.

“One successful ritual fixes the economy.”

Magic supplements ordinary production. Treat a blessing as an investment in capacity or a response to a specific crisis, then continue managing farms, herds, trade, and labor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think like a Hyaloring clan

The manual advises experiencing the story and thinking like a Hyaloring clan rather than treating the game as a simple conquest exercise. That perspective makes the systems fit together: food keeps people alive, herds and goods preserve choices, relationships change the political landscape, exploration reveals the valley, and rituals connect practical survival to the setting’s traditions.

The goal is a clan able to continue its saga after an unlucky event, not a sequence of perfect turns. Keep the next harvest possible, maintain enough reserves to absorb a setback, and choose opportunities whose risks your current season can actually bear.

Platforms and current availability

The Steam listing identifies the game and lists its release year as 2019. An official US Apple App Store listing describes an iPhone and iPad version with activities including pasture improvement, exploration, trade, raiding, and visits to the Otherworld. Store prices, ratings, and device compatibility can change, so check the live listing for your region and hardware before buying or installing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
