Reports published on 2 and 3 October 2026 said three people had been arrested. Police had not publicly established a motive or clarified the alleged roles of those involved.
What happened to Pradeep Purnekar?
Contemporaneous reports said Purnekar was shot and attacked with a sharp-edged weapon at his office in Thane on the night of Tuesday, 29 September 2026. The attack was within the jurisdiction of Kapurbawdi police station. He died after being taken to a nearby hospital, according to PTI reporting published by Rediff on 1 October.

Why has an SIT been formed?
Thane Police set up a dedicated team to investigate the murder and identify those responsible. PTI reported that the SIT had 23 members. A Hindustan Times report on 2 October also described the senior police officers involved in the team.

Police had not announced a confirmed motive in the reports available by 3 October. DCP Amarsinh Jadhav told Hindustan Times that police were examining possible angles to identify the accused and ascertain the motive. The SIT’s formation is an investigative step, not a finding about who committed the crime or why.
Who has been arrested?
News reports published on 2–3 October said three people had been arrested: Prakash alias Papya Shinde, Nikhil Yadav and Nitesh Pawar. The Indian Express reported on 2 October that Yadav and Pawar were arrested near Raigad and that two other suspects were then on the run. Hindustan Times reported on 3 October that three arrests had been made in total.
An arrest is not proof of guilt. The reports did not establish the individual roles of the arrested people, including who allegedly shot or stabbed Purnekar. Those details remained under investigation.

What has been alleged about Meenakshi and Rajendra Shinde?
According to Hindustan Times and The Indian Express, Purnekar’s family named former Thane mayor Meenakshi Shinde and her husband, Rajendra Shinde, in allegations about involvement in the case. The couple denied the allegations. Meenakshi Shinde called them baseless and said the family should provide evidence; the accusation remains an allegation, not an established finding.

No. A 3 October Hindustan Times report described a possible connection to a 160-acre redevelopment project as an investigative angle. Police had not publicly confirmed that the project was the motive. It should therefore be treated as a reported possibility, not an established explanation for the killing.
What police action had been reported?
PTI reported on 1 October that police had seized two vehicles allegedly connected to the crime and registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act for murder and other offences. The reports available here do not include the FIR, remand orders or court records, so they do not establish the precise charges, custody status or subsequent court proceedings.
