Siri vs. Alexa vs. Google Assistant: Which Voice Assistant Is Most Private?

There is no evidence-backed universal privacy winner among Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant. The answer changes according to what you mean by privacy: whether audio is saved, how long transcripts remain, whether a human can review samples, whether activity is tied to an account, and what a deletion control actually removes. Apple says Siri audio is not stored unless you opt in to improvement features; Google says Assistant audio saving to your account is off unless you enable it; Amazon lets you avoid saving recordings or set automatic deletion, but text transcripts can remain temporarily. All three still process requests in some circumstances so they can respond.

The practical choice is therefore a settings decision, not a brand score. This guide separates recording from processing, explains each company’s current controls, and gives deletion steps that match the scope of the data each control covers.

What “private” means for a voice assistant

A voice assistant has several different data events that are often described loosely as “recording.” A device can detect a wake word, capture a short audio buffer, stream a request to a provider, convert speech to text, retain a transcript, use data to improve models, and associate the interaction with an account. Those events do not have identical privacy consequences.

  • Processing: audio may be sent to a provider’s servers so the service can understand and answer it. Processing is not the same as long-term storage.
  • Audio retention: the provider keeps the actual sound file after processing. A setting can prevent account storage while still allowing temporary processing.
  • Transcript retention: speech-to-text results, typed requests and the assistant’s response may remain even when audio is deleted.
  • Human review: selected samples may be examined by trained reviewers for quality or model improvement, subject to each provider’s settings and procedures.
  • Linkage: history can be connected to an account, device identifier, household profile, location, or a third-party service.
  • Deletion scope: a control may remove recordings but leave transcripts, action logs, purchases, attachments or other records needed to operate a feature.

Because these categories differ, statements such as “it never listens” or “it records everything” are inaccurate. Privacy settings also vary by hardware, operating-system version, country, account state and the service used through the assistant.

At-a-glance comparison

Privacy dimension Siri Alexa Google Assistant
Provider’s described audio-saving default Apple says audio is not stored unless the user opts in to Improve Siri and Dictation. Requests can still be processed on the device or sent to Apple servers, depending on the feature and device. You can choose not to save voice recordings. Amazon also provides review, deletion and automatic-deletion controls. Voice and audio activity saving is off unless you turn it on. Google still processes audio needed to answer a request.
What can remain besides audio Transcripts and request data may be retained according to the feature and settings. Third-party app policies apply when Siri acts through an app. With recording saving disabled, transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat. Other action-related records can remain. Previously saved recordings are not removed merely by switching saving off. Other Assistant and account activity settings may govern additional data.
Improvement and human review Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence is opt-in. Apple says collected audio, text, transcripts and related data can be reviewed by Apple employees. A setting controls whether recordings help improve services and develop features. When voice and audio activity is enabled, saved samples may be reviewed by trained reviewers after steps intended to disassociate the audio from the account.
Account or identifier linkage Opt-in improvement data uses a rotating, device-generated identifier rather than the Apple Account or email; identifiers can connect requests in an ongoing conversation. Alexa history is associated with an Amazon account. Deletion and settings can be marketplace-specific. The audio setting controls recordings saved to the signed-in Google Account on Google servers. Other account and device settings can matter.
Important deletion limitation Deleting local Siri history does not necessarily delete server-side data collected under a separate improvement opt-in. Deleting recordings, transcripts and typed requests does not guarantee removal of every interaction record, such as actions or products searched. Turning off saving does not delete recordings already saved. Auto-delete covers all Web & App Activity items, not audio alone.

This is a policy comparison based on the companies’ published documentation, not a laboratory audit or a universal privacy ranking. The settings on your specific device and account determine the result.

Siri: strong audio-storage language, with important exceptions

When Siri audio is processed or stored

Apple’s Siri, Dictation & Privacy documentation says audio is sent to and processed on Apple servers when a request is not handled on the device. The same page says Apple does not store Siri audio unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation. Siri settings on the device indicate whether a request is processed on-device.

“Not stored” does not mean “never processed.” A cloud-dependent request must travel to Apple for interpretation, even if Apple says the audio is not retained afterward. Apple may still store transcripts and request data, and the exact data flow depends on the feature, device and settings.

What the improvement opt-in changes

Under Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence & Privacy, Apple may collect audio, transcripts, responses, conversation history and related request data to improve products and models. Apple says this opt-in data may be retained for up to two years, while a small reviewed subset may be kept longer. It says only Apple employees can access audio for review.

Apple describes a random device-generated identifier that rotates multiple times per hour. The identifier is not tied to your Apple Account or email, although identifiers can be connected during a continuing conversation. That is a form of pseudonymous linkage, not a promise that the interaction is anonymous.

“Your request history is not used to build a marketing profile, and is never sold to anyone.” — Apple, Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence & Privacy

Other Siri privacy boundaries

Siri Suggestions can be processed locally, and iCloud syncing for Siri settings and personalization is end-to-end encrypted according to Apple’s documentation. You can disable Siri, delete local history, control which apps integrate with Siri, and turn off location access. Those controls are separate from the improvement opt-in, so deleting local history should not be described as erasing every server-side record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Siri interacts with a third-party app or service on your behalf, that app’s terms and privacy policy apply as well. A private Siri setting cannot override the data practices of a service you ask Siri to use.

Alexa: granular controls, but text can outlive audio

Wake-word indicators and false wakes

Amazon says an Echo device uses a visual or audible indicator when it detects the wake word and begins streaming audio to the cloud. It calls unintended activations “false wakes.” You can review and delete recordings, including audio captured after a false wake, through Alexa Privacy controls. The indicator is useful, but it is not proof that no audio existed before activation; wake-word detection requires the device to analyze nearby sound locally.

No saved recordings does not mean no retained text

Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs let you choose not to save voice recordings. Under that choice, Amazon says recordings are deleted after processing, while transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat unless you delete them sooner.

Amazon Echo Dot Max (newest model), Alexa speaker with room-filling sound and nearly 3x bass, Great for living rooms and medium-sized spaces, Designed for Alexa+, Graphite
  • Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
  • Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
  • Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
  • Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

You can also set automatic deletion after three or 18 months. Those periods are policy options, not measurements of how long every user’s data remains. Deletion and non-saving choices can reduce personalization and affect features such as Voice ID.

Records that may remain after deletion

Amazon says deleting voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests may leave other interaction-related records needed for functions. Examples include records of actions, products searched for, shared attachments and information supplied during an interaction. Therefore, “delete my Alexa recordings” is narrower than “erase everything Alexa knows about this event.”

Alexa history is associated with an Amazon account. If the account has been used in more than one marketplace, Amazon says history must be deleted separately for each marketplace. Check every marketplace in which you use the account rather than assuming one deletion covers all regions.

Improvement and review controls

Amazon provides a setting to manage whether recordings are used to improve services and develop features. Review the setting alongside the recording-retention choice: preventing long-term storage and declining improvement use address different purposes.

Google Assistant: account audio saving is off by default, but saved history needs separate action

What the voice and audio activity switch does

Google’s Manage audio recordings in your Web & App Activity page says voice and audio activity saving is off unless you choose to enable it. When it is off, Assistant recordings are not saved to your Google Account on Google servers under that setting, even when you are signed in. Google still processes audio to understand and answer the request.

Turning the switch off is not retroactive. Google explicitly says it does not delete audio already saved. Existing recordings must be deleted individually, through Web & App Activity, or through the applicable account controls.

Incorrect activations and review

When audio saving is enabled, Google says audio can be captured after the device detects activation, including some seconds before activation. An incorrect activation can therefore create a saved recording. Google says saved samples may be analyzed by trained reviewers, with steps such as disassociating the audio from the account during review.

Google’s Assistant privacy page says conversations are encrypted in transit between the device, Google services and data centers, and states that Google does not sell personal information, including audio recordings. These are Google’s descriptions of its practices, not an independent audit.

“Google never sells your personal information — that includes your audio recordings.” — Google, How Google Assistant protects your privacy

Auto-delete has a broad scope

Google lets you delete saved audio individually or with Web & App Activity. Its auto-delete control applies to all Web & App Activity items, not just voice recordings. Enabling it can therefore remove other account activity according to the selected period, so read the scope before choosing a duration. Separate Assistant settings and other storage locations may not be governed by this audio switch.

How to reduce retention and delete history

Labels and menu paths can change with software updates, but the following sequence reflects the controls described in the providers’ current help pages. Confirm the wording on your own device before saving a setting.

For Siri

  1. Open your device’s Settings and search for Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  2. Review whether requests are processed on-device and disable Siri features you do not use.
  3. Open the privacy or improvement section and leave Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence (or the equivalent Improve Siri and Dictation control) off if you do not want to contribute audio and related data.
  4. Use the Siri and Dictation history control to delete local history.
  5. Review app access and location access separately; disable integrations that send requests to services you do not trust.

Local-history deletion and the improvement setting are different controls. Deleting one does not automatically reverse data already collected under the other.

For Alexa

  1. Open the Alexa app or the Alexa Privacy section on the web and choose Review Voice History or the equivalent history control.
  2. Inspect recordings for ordinary requests and false wakes, then delete individual items or the available range.
  3. In Manage Your Alexa Data, choose not to save voice recordings if that is your priority.
  4. If you prefer scheduled deletion, select the available three-month or 18-month automatic-deletion period.
  5. Review the setting controlling use of recordings to improve services and features.
  6. If you use more than one Amazon marketplace, repeat the history review for each marketplace.

With recording saving disabled, allow for the documented 30-day retention of transcripts and typed requests after the last interaction in a chat unless you delete them sooner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Google Assistant

  1. Open your Google Account and go to Data & privacy, then Web & App Activity.
  2. Open the voice and audio activity setting and leave it off if you do not want new Assistant recordings saved to the account.
  3. Use activity controls to find and delete recordings that were saved previously.
  4. Review auto-delete carefully: it applies to all Web & App Activity, not only audio.
  5. Check Assistant, device and third-party-service settings separately, because the audio switch may not govern every location where related data exists.

Which assistant fits different privacy priorities?

Your priority What the published policies indicate What to verify yourself
Minimize provider-held audio by default Apple says Siri audio is not stored unless you opt in; Google says account audio saving is off unless enabled; Amazon offers a no-save choice. Whether a particular request is processed on-device, which features require cloud processing, and whether an improvement setting is enabled.
Keep a convenient history while limiting its lifetime Amazon offers three- or 18-month automatic deletion and a no-save option with a documented 30-day text period. Google offers auto-delete, but it covers all Web & App Activity. Apple’s improvement data can be retained up to two years when opted in. The exact retention period, account scope and effect on personalization or other activity.
Avoid human review of improvement samples Apple’s improvement program is opt-in and says Apple employees can review audio. Google describes reviewer access for saved samples when audio activity is on. Amazon provides a control for use of recordings to improve services. That the relevant improvement or review setting is disabled, not merely that recordings are hidden from a history screen.
Use third-party services by voice Siri says the third party’s terms and privacy policy apply when Siri uses an app. Comparable service-specific rules also apply to integrations on the other platforms. What the destination service stores, how long it keeps requests and whether it links them to your account.

These priorities do not produce a single winner. A person who values Apple’s stated no-audio-storage default may prefer Siri with improvement sharing disabled. Someone who wants explicit account-level activity controls may prefer Google with audio saving off and existing history deleted. Someone who wants a no-save option plus scheduled deletion may prefer Alexa, while accepting its documented text-retention and interaction-record limits.

Common privacy mistakes

  • Confusing processing with storage: a request can be sent to a cloud service without being retained as an audio file.
  • Assuming an off switch is retroactive: Google says disabling audio saving does not delete previously saved recordings; Apple’s local-history control does not necessarily erase opt-in server data.
  • Deleting audio but forgetting text: Alexa’s no-save choice still permits the stated 30-day transcript and typed-request period.
  • Treating one account page as universal: marketplace-specific Alexa history, third-party apps and separate Assistant settings can sit outside a single deletion control.
  • Ignoring false wakes: all three ecosystems can encounter unintended activation scenarios. Review history rather than assuming every item reflects a deliberate command.
  • Relying on account unlinking for anonymity: pseudonymous identifiers, device records, service logs and interaction data can still exist under the provider’s stated policies.
  • Leaving sensitive conversations near a microphone: mute or power down the device during confidential meetings, medical discussions or financial conversations when practical.

A practical privacy checklist

  1. Identify every assistant-enabled device in your home, car and phone; privacy settings may be device- or account-specific.
2. Turn off recording-saving or improvement-sharing options you do not need.
  3. Choose an automatic-deletion period, understanding whether it covers only voice data or a wider activity history.
  4. Review history immediately after setup and periodically afterward for false wakes and unexpected integrations.
  5. Delete old recordings and transcripts separately when the provider distinguishes them.
  6. Audit third-party skills, apps and services, because their own policies apply to requests passed through the assistant.
  7. Use hardware mute or disable the assistant during conversations that should never reach a microphone.

For current controls, consult Apple’s Siri, Dictation & Privacy and Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence & Privacy, Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs, and Google’s audio-recording controls and Assistant privacy explanation. Provider pages can change as software and account interfaces evolve.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant each offer a meaningful way to limit stored voice data, but none is established as the overall privacy winner. Compare the exact settings for audio retention, transcripts, improvement use, human review, account linkage and deletion scope, then configure the assistant and hardware you actually use.
