Move around while watching the on-screen circle. Apple says it grows as you get closer to the remote.

Apple’s June 5, 2023 tvOS 17 announcement describes locating a Siri Remote through the iPhone interface. It does not promise an audible alert or state a detection distance or accuracy, so the visual cue—not a sound or a precise range—is the documented guidance.
Which Siri Remotes are compatible?
Apple specified Siri Remote (2nd generation or later) for the finder. If you have an older remote, the announcement does not establish that it can be located this way. Check the generation of your remote before assuming the feature is available or replacing hardware.

Apple’s current Apple TV 4K product page says an iPhone can help find a missing Siri Remote and shows current configurations with a USB-C Siri Remote. That current product description does not mean you need to buy a new Apple TV: first check the remote and Apple TV you already own, and confirm compatibility for your setup.
Why does the headline say it took eight years?
CNET writer Patrick Holland’s August 24, 2026 retrospective looks back at a wishlist published in March 2017 and says the remote finder was its last requested feature to arrive. It describes six of the seven wishes as later addressed, naming an Amazon video app, 4K support, and improved TV control among them. The remaining request was an optical audio output, which Holland said Apple TV still lacked.

The retrospective supports the broad 2017-to-2023 chronology behind “eight years,” not an exact elapsed-time calculation. Nor does it show that Apple credited Holland’s article or responded to his specific request; the documented connection is chronological.

No. The finder uses an iPhone’s Apple TV Remote control to help locate compatible hardware. Siri on Apple TV is a separate capability for requests such as “What should I watch?” or “Play my music.” Apple Support’s Use Siri on your Apple TV page covers those voice interactions, not the remote finder.
