Then work through the same order on either platform: confirm an internet connection, restart the phone, test touch or button activation, check microphone access, retrain the wake phrase, and verify account, language, region and administrator restrictions. Gemini adds two Android-specific requirements: the Google app must host it, and Android must recognize that app as the default digital assistant.
The symptom tells you where to look. If a button or on-screen microphone works but a wake phrase fails, focus on voice-recognition setup. If neither voice nor touch works, check connectivity, permissions, the active assistant and software updates before assuming the microphone is broken.

Start with the platform and the failure pattern
Siri and Gemini are not interchangeable settings. Siri is integrated into iOS and iPadOS. On Android, you may be using Google Assistant, Gemini, or an Android setting that points to the wrong default assistant. A Gemini app installation by itself does not make Gemini the assistant that answers the phone’s wake phrase.

Run the quick checks first
1. Verify the connection
Both Apple’s and Google’s troubleshooting guidance puts connectivity near the beginning. Open a web page in the browser or use another app that needs the internet. If pages do not load, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, move to a stronger signal, or reconnect to the network before changing assistant settings.

A phone can still show a keyboard or a cached app while the assistant cannot reach its service. Treat a failed connection as a separate problem rather than repeatedly saying the wake phrase.
2. Restart the phone
Restarting clears a stalled assistant process and resets temporary audio routing. After the phone starts, unlock it, wait for the mobile or Wi-Fi connection to return, and test the assistant once before changing several settings at the same time. Google specifically recommends a restart when connection problems affect Assistant.

Use the side-button or other configured button on an iPhone or iPad to invoke Siri. On Android, open the Google or Gemini app and tap its microphone control. If this produces a response, the service and microphone path are at least partly functional; the remaining fault is likely wake-phrase recognition, Voice Match, or a setting that controls hands-free activation. If the button and touch methods also fail, continue with connectivity, permissions and assistant-selection checks.
Fix Siri on an iPhone or iPad
Confirm Siri is enabled
- Open Settings and select Siri, or Apple Intelligence & Siri on versions that use that label.
- Turn the Siri or “Hey Siri” option off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
- Complete the spoken voice-recognition setup when iOS presents it. Speak each displayed phrase clearly in a normal voice and in a quiet environment.
Apple changes the wording and grouping of these controls between iOS releases, so seeing Siri in one version and Apple Intelligence & Siri in another is normal. The important action is to disable and re-enable the wake feature, then record the recognition prompts again.

Separate wake-word failure from Siri failure
Press the side button and ask a short question. If Siri responds this way but not to “Hey Siri,” repeat the voice setup rather than resetting the phone. You can also type to Siri. A typed request confirms that Siri itself is available even when the spoken trigger or microphone path is not.
Make spoken replies audible
If Siri appears on screen but you hear nothing, open Siri’s response settings and choose Prefer Spoken Responses. This setting controls whether Siri speaks its answer instead of relying primarily on on-screen text. Also check the phone’s volume and whether it is connected to a Bluetooth headset or car system; test again with the phone’s own speaker if audio is being routed elsewhere.

Open Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update, then restart and retest. Updates can restore assistant components that stopped responding after a system change. Keep the phone connected to power and a reliable network while the update installs.
Check for a VPN that blocks Siri
If Siri settings disappear after a restart, Apple advises checking VPN settings. A VPN profile or a managed network configuration may not allow Siri to connect. Temporarily disconnect a personal VPN and test again. On a work- or school-managed iPhone or iPad, contact the administrator before removing a profile; a policy may be intentional and cannot be fixed from the Siri screen.
Fix Google Assistant and “Hey Google” on Android
Refresh the Google app and connection
- Confirm that another app can reach the internet, then restart the phone.
- Open the Play Store, search for the Google app and install its available update.
- Open Assistant settings and verify that Hey Google is enabled.
Google’s mobile help describes a strong internet connection and a restart as first responses to connection problems. Updating the Google app matters because the app supplies Assistant components even when Android’s system menus have not changed.

Set up Voice Match again
In Assistant settings, turn on Hey Google and complete Voice Match. Voice Match is Google’s speaker-recognition layer. It learns the enrolled voice and uses that match to decide whether a wake phrase should activate the assistant. Record the prompts in a quiet room, keep the phone at a normal speaking distance and avoid playing another voice assistant or video nearby.

If pressing a button opens Assistant but “Hey Google” does nothing, Voice Match is the highest-value check. Re-enrolling it is more targeted than clearing unrelated apps or performing a factory reset.
Look for a managed-account restriction
A Google Workspace for Education administrator can disable settings required for Hey Google. On a school-managed account, the toggle may be missing or unavailable even though the phone and microphone work. Test with an account that is not governed by that policy only if you are permitted to do so, or ask the administrator whether hands-free Assistant is allowed.
Fix Gemini on Android
Understand Gemini’s host and default-assistant requirements
Gemini is hosted by the Google app. Installing a Gemini app does not by itself make Gemini the assistant that answers a phone-wide wake phrase. Android must list the Google app as the default digital-assistant app, and Gemini must then be selected in Gemini or Google Assistant settings.
- Open Android’s Default digital assistant setting. On many phones it is under Settings > Apps > Default apps; manufacturers may place it elsewhere or use different wording.
- Choose the Google app as the default digital-assistant app.
- Open Gemini or Google Assistant settings and select Gemini as the assistant, if the choice is offered.
- Invoke the assistant with the phone’s configured button or gesture, then test the wake phrase after the selection is saved.
If you want the previous behavior, open the Gemini app and use its assistant settings to switch back to Google Assistant. Switching assistants is reversible; it does not require uninstalling Gemini.

Use the in-app microphone when “Hey Google” is unavailable
When hands-free activation is not offered, start a voice chat by tapping the microphone in the Gemini app. This route is subject to language and availability limits, but it can distinguish a wake-phrase problem from a broader Gemini problem. A working in-app microphone with a failed wake phrase points back to Voice Match or default-assistant configuration.
Review Google app permissions
Open the Google app’s App info screen, then open Permissions. Check microphone access first. Google states that Gemini and the Google app use microphone, camera, contacts and location according to the permissions granted to them. Denying a permission can remove a capability without making the app appear broken.
- Allow microphone access if you want spoken prompts or voice chat.
- Review camera, contacts and location only for features that need them; granting every permission is not required for a basic typed request.
- If Android offers a temporary or “only while in use” microphone choice, select the option that matches how you intend to use Gemini.
After changing a permission, close and reopen Gemini, then test the microphone again. If Android shows that another app is using the microphone, stop that recording, calling or camera session and retry.
Check eligibility and device-control limits
Gemini features can depend on the phone’s account, language, country, device eligibility or administrator policy. A setting can therefore look correct while a particular voice or device-control feature remains unavailable. Some actions that control the phone require Gemini to be the default digital assistant and require additional permissions. If a general conversation works but a phone-control command is rejected, verify those two prerequisites before reinstalling anything.
Use the microphone as a separate diagnostic
Assistants need both a service connection and a usable audio input. Open the phone’s recorder or camera and make a short recording. Play it back through the phone speaker. A recording with no voice, severe distortion or intermittent cutouts suggests a microphone, case, debris or hardware problem rather than an assistant setting.
- Remove a case or screen protector that covers a microphone opening.
- Check that a headset, car system or Bluetooth accessory is not selected as the input.
- Close calling, recording, camera and meeting apps that may retain the microphone.
- Recheck microphone permission for Siri-related system access or the Google app on Android.
- Repeat the assistant test after the recorder captures clear audio.
Do not assume that a working loudspeaker proves the microphone works. Input and output are separate components, and an assistant can display text even when spoken output is muted.
Resolve account, language, region and policy blocks
Account type
A personal account and a managed work or school account can expose different assistant controls. Google Workspace for Education policies can disable Hey Google, while other administrator rules can limit Gemini. If the control is greyed out or absent, identify which account is active before changing device settings.
Language and country
Voice activation and Gemini conversations are not identical in every language or country. If the microphone button works but a wake phrase or voice-chat option is missing, review the assistant language and the phone’s country or region settings. Changing a language can affect recognition of an existing Voice Match profile, so retrain the phrase after making a change.

Some Gemini capabilities are limited to eligible devices. An update can leave the app installed while a feature remains unavailable for the account or hardware. Treat an in-app message that cites eligibility as a service limitation, not evidence that the microphone is defective.
VPN and managed network settings
On Apple devices, a VPN profile may prevent Siri from connecting. On either platform, a work or school network can filter assistant traffic. Test on a trusted connection that you are allowed to use, and consult the network administrator rather than deleting a managed profile.
An efficient end-to-end repair order
Use this sequence when the symptom is unclear. It avoids repeating the same test after every setting change.
- Test a web page or another online app.
- Restart the phone and wait for the connection to return.
- Invoke the assistant by button, gesture or an in-app microphone.
- If touch works but the wake phrase fails, redo Siri’s voice setup or Hey Google and Voice Match.
- Record audio in another app and check whether the microphone captures clear sound.
- Review microphone permission and stop any app currently using the microphone.
- On Android, verify the Google app is the default digital-assistant app, then select Gemini or Google Assistant as required.
- Update iOS, the Google app and Gemini where applicable.
- Check VPN configuration, managed-account policy, language, country and device eligibility.
- Retest both spoken and on-screen responses after each meaningful change.

When software checks are exhausted
If the phone has a reliable connection, current software, correct assistant selection, working permissions and a microphone that still records no usable sound, stop repeating voice-setup steps. A damaged microphone, water exposure, blocked opening or failing audio circuit needs qualified phone support or repair. Provide the technician with the tests you completed, including whether button activation, in-app microphone recording and speaker playback worked. If a managed account or VPN is involved, involve the administrator or network support team before paying for hardware service.
