Siri App or Hey Siri? Choose the Right Way to Use Siri

Hey Siri is a voice wake phrase; the Siri app is a separate conversation interface that may be available in beta. You can also start Siri with a device control or type a request. Which option makes sense depends on your device, software, language, region, and whether you want hands-free access or a conversation history.

What is the difference between the Siri app and Hey Siri?

“Hey Siri” (or, on some supported device, language, and region combinations, “Siri”) activates Siri by voice when voice listening is enabled. It is an activation method, not an app. Apple’s Siri device guide and iPhone setup guide describe voice activation alongside device controls and typing.

The Siri app documented in Apple’s Siri AI beta guide is a distinct conversation interface. It brings conversations together, can let you start or continue a conversation, accepts typed or spoken requests, and supports adding photos or files. It is not present for every iPhone, and saying “Hey Siri” does not necessarily open the app.

Which way should you use Siri?

Method Useful when What to know
Voice phrase You want to make a hands-free request and voice activation is enabled. The available wake phrase depends on device, language, and region. You do not need the Siri app.
Device control You prefer not to say a wake phrase or voice activation is unavailable. The control differs by device: examples include the side or Home button on iPhone, Digital Crown on Apple Watch, touch controls on HomePod, or Siri Remote.
Typing Speaking is inconvenient or you prefer a written request. Apple documents Type to Siri; the gesture and interface can differ when Apple Intelligence is available.
Siri app You want the conversation-history workflow, or to add a photo or file, and the app is available to you. This is a separate beta experience with eligibility and availability limits.

Apple’s device instructions also describe supported headphones as another way to invoke Siri. Compatibility and controls vary by model; headphones are optional, not a requirement.

How to activate Siri on iPhone

  1. Check the activation setting. Open Settings and look for Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri. Depending on the software version, the relevant controls may appear under Requests, Talk to Siri, or Talk & Type to Siri. Apple’s Siri settings guide describes the available options; labels can vary by version.
  2. Choose voice activation if you want it. Turn on the option to listen for the supported phrase. The option to use “Siri” without “Hey” is not available for every device, language, or region.
  3. Use a button instead. On an iPhone with Face ID, press and hold the side button. On a model with a Home button, press and hold Home. Apple’s activation instructions cover iPhone options.
  4. Type a request if speaking does not suit the moment. Find Type to Siri in the relevant Siri settings. On Apple Intelligence-supported devices, typing can use a different gesture and interface from the Accessibility setting used when Apple Intelligence is off or unavailable. See Apple’s Apple Intelligence with Siri guide.

On other Apple devices, use the control specified for that device rather than assuming the iPhone gesture applies. Apple’s device guide lists options such as buttons, the Digital Crown, HomePod touch controls, and Siri Remote.

How to get more from Siri’s conversation features

On supported devices, Apple describes Apple Intelligence features including typed requests, follow-up requests that preserve context, and questions about Apple products. The Siri app beta adds a conversation-history workflow, options to continue conversations across devices signed in to the same Apple Account, and photo or file attachments. Availability depends on eligibility; these are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every response will be correct. Apple cautions that generative outputs can vary, so check important information.

For straightforward requests, Apple’s setup material gives examples such as “What’s 18 percent of 225?” and “Set the timer for 3 minutes.” You can speak, type, or use a device control according to what is convenient and available.

Who can use the Siri app and Apple Intelligence?

Do not assume “Siri AI” or the Siri app is available on every iPhone. Apple’s beta guidance makes availability conditional on compatible hardware and software, supported Siri and device languages, and an eligible region. A waitlist may apply, wait times can vary, and usage limits may apply. The supported-device list and availability can change; check the current Siri app guidance and the Siri options shown in Settings on your device.

Apple also notes that Siri features vary by language and country or region. If a wake phrase or feature is missing, the combination of device, software, language, and location may not support it; that does not necessarily mean setup is incorrect. Apple’s device guide explains that availability varies.

What to check if Siri does not respond

  1. Check the internet connection and confirm Siri is enabled in Settings.
  2. If voice activation fails, check the wake-phrase setting and repeat voice setup if prompted.
  3. Try another activation method: use the device button or control, or type a request if that option is available.
  4. If Siri responds but does not speak, review the response settings.
  5. If Siri is missing from Settings after a restart, check whether a VPN profile is installed; Apple notes that some VPN profiles may prevent Siri from appearing there.

Apple’s full checklist is in If Siri isn’t working on your iPhone or iPad.
