Yes—but not in the way “Siri is Google Gemini” suggests. Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration in which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. Apple says those resulting models were custom-built with Google and Gemini technology to power Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI. Siri remains Apple’s assistant experience, not the Gemini app or Google Assistant running under another name.

The short answer: Gemini helped build Siri’s underlying models

Apple’s published description draws an important line between model technology and the product people use. In a joint statement dated January 12, 2026, Apple and Google said the next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. They said those models would support future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri.

Apple later described the relationship more specifically: the models behind new Apple Intelligence experiences were “custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models.” Apple presents the resulting foundation models, operating system integration and Siri experience as Apple products. That means Gemini technology is part of the development foundation, but Siri is not simply Google’s Gemini chatbot embedded in iOS.

The most accurate one-sentence explanation is: Siri AI uses Apple Foundation Models that Apple says were custom-built with Google and Gemini models, while the user-facing assistant remains Apple’s Siri.

What Apple and Google actually agreed to

A multi-year foundation-model collaboration

The January 12, 2026 joint statement from Apple and Google describes a multi-year collaboration. The next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. The statement connects that work to future Apple Intelligence capabilities rather than announcing a consumer Gemini app inside Apple devices.

“Based on” does not establish that Apple copied Google’s consumer product, uses an unmodified Gemini model for every request, or sends every Siri question to Google. Apple’s later wording—“custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models”—indicates that the models used in Apple’s system are developed for Apple’s platform and requirements.

Apple still owns the assistant experience

Apple describes Siri AI as an Apple Intelligence feature with personal-context understanding, onscreen awareness, conversational responses and the ability to take actions across system apps. Those are Apple’s descriptions of the intended experience; they are not independent benchmark results. The interface, operating-system permissions, app actions and privacy architecture are controlled through Apple’s software stack.

Is Siri powered by Google Assistant?

No. Google Assistant and Google Gemini are Google’s consumer-facing assistant experiences. The sources available for this explanation do not show Siri being replaced by either app.

TechRadar reported on June 9, 2026, that Apple senior vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi rejected the idea that Google Assistant was the assistant inside Siri. In the report, he was quoted as saying: “This is the amount of the Google assistant we use, which is none.” That is a reported interview quotation, not a sentence from Apple’s formal joint statement. It addresses Google Assistant as a user-facing assistant; it does not contradict Apple’s statements that Gemini models and technology contributed to Apple Foundation Models.

Therefore, two statements can both be true:

  • Apple does not use Google Assistant as Siri’s user-facing assistant.
  • Apple and Google collaborated on foundation models based on Google’s Gemini technology.

How the model relationship differs from the apps

Question Apple Foundation Models and Siri AI Google Gemini app or Google Assistant
Who presents the assistant? Apple presents Siri AI as part of Apple Intelligence and its operating systems. Google presents these as its own consumer assistant experiences.
What is the relationship? Apple says its next-generation models were custom-built in collaboration with Google and Gemini models. These are Google’s standalone products; the reviewed sources do not establish that either one is built into Siri.
Where can processing occur? On supported devices or through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute architecture, depending on the workload. Processing and privacy arrangements depend on the Google product and service being used; no equivalence with Siri’s architecture is established here.
How does the user invoke it? Through Siri and Apple Intelligence features integrated with Apple operating systems and apps. Through Google’s own apps and assistant interfaces.

This distinction matters because “uses Gemini technology” describes a model-development relationship, while “is the Gemini app” describes a consumer product identity. Apple’s statements support the first claim, not the second.

Where Siri AI runs: device processing and Private Cloud Compute

On-device Apple Foundation Models

Apple says its foundation-model framework can run an on-device model. On-device processing can handle requests locally when the device and model are capable of doing so. The exact behavior depends on the feature, request and supported hardware.

Private Cloud Compute for demanding requests

More demanding Apple Intelligence workloads can run through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system. Apple says Siri AI’s models can run on servers using Private Cloud Compute, which is designed to extend the privacy properties of on-device processing to larger models.

In its June 8, 2026 security explanation, Apple said it worked with Google and NVIDIA to run demanding Apple Intelligence workloads on Google Cloud systems using NVIDIA GPUs. Apple identified agentic tool use and complex reasoning as examples of workloads that may require this type of capacity.

Apple’s technical description names NVIDIA Confidential Computing with NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs with TDX and Google’s Titan chip as components of the Google Cloud deployment. These details describe infrastructure used for Apple’s cloud processing; they do not turn Siri into a Google service or establish that Google can read a user’s private requests.

What Apple promises about privacy

Apple says Private Cloud Compute requests are processed without personal data being stored or made accessible to Apple or other parties. That is Apple’s stated privacy commitment. It should be read as the company’s architecture and policy claim, not as an independently audited conclusion established by the information available here.

Does Siri send every question to Google?

There is no basis for saying that every Siri question is sent to Google. Apple describes a mixed execution model: some processing happens on the device and some demanding work can use Private Cloud Compute. Apple also says the cloud infrastructure for certain workloads includes Google Cloud systems, but that does not mean Google receives the request as a consumer Gemini interaction.

The path can vary by request and capability. A simple device-supported task may be handled locally. A request requiring a larger model or complex reasoning may be sent to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute environment. Apple’s published materials do not provide a consumer-facing rule that identifies the processing location for every individual Siri prompt.

Users should also distinguish cloud infrastructure from an app account. Using Google Cloud systems as part of Apple’s server architecture is not the same as opening the Gemini app, creating a Google conversation history or handing control of Siri to Google Assistant.

What developers can use—and what that does not prove about consumer Siri

Apple’s WWDC26 Apple Intelligence developer guide describes the Foundation Models framework. It gives developers access to Apple’s on-device model and also allows work with cloud models, including Claude and Gemini, or other providers that conform to Apple’s Language Model protocol.

That developer option is separate from the Apple-Google collaboration behind Apple’s own foundation models. A developer choosing a Gemini-compatible provider does not demonstrate that consumer Siri defaults to the Gemini app, nor does it identify which model handles a particular Siri request.

Apple separately describes App Intents as the mechanism for connecting apps to Apple Intelligence features such as Siri AI. App Intents let an app expose actions and information in a form Apple Intelligence can use. This is an integration framework, not evidence that the app’s own model provider becomes Siri’s provider.

When Siri AI is available

Availability is tied to Apple’s rollout, language support, hardware and region. Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement said Siri AI began rolling out in beta in English with Apple’s 2027 software releases. Apple said French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish would follow the next month.

Apple also said Siri AI would initially be unavailable in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS. Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, would not be available in China while Apple worked through regulatory requirements. These conditions can change as software releases and regional approvals change, so the current Apple requirements page should be checked before treating the feature as available on a particular device.

Hardware eligibility

Apple lists iPhone 16 models among supported Apple Intelligence devices, along with specified iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch models. An iPhone being new enough to run a current operating system does not automatically mean it supports Apple Intelligence.

Siri AI requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device set to a supported language. Eligibility can also depend on the operating-system release and the user’s region. Apple’s list, rather than the phone’s marketing name alone, is the reliable check.

Common interpretations that are wrong or incomplete

“Siri is just Gemini”

That overstates the relationship. Apple says Gemini models and technology contributed to custom-built Apple Foundation Models. Siri includes Apple’s system integration, permissions, personal-context handling and app actions. Nothing in the published descriptions says Siri is an unmodified Gemini consumer product.

“Google Assistant is hidden inside Siri”

The reported Federighi comment specifically rejects that interpretation. Google Assistant is not identified as Siri’s user-facing assistant.

“Apple sends all Siri data to Google”

Apple describes on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, not universal routing to Google. Google Cloud is named as infrastructure for some demanding workloads. That is different from sending every request to a Google consumer account or app.

“Any developer Gemini integration is the same as Apple’s deal”

Apple’s developer framework supports multiple model providers, including Gemini and Claude. Those developer choices are distinct from Apple’s own foundation-model collaboration and do not reveal Siri’s default model path.

What remains undisclosed

Apple and Google have not published a model parameter count, benchmark score, percentage of Siri requests handled by Gemini-derived models, or a complete routing chart showing which model answers each type of prompt. No reliable published figure establishes how much of Siri’s behavior comes from Gemini-derived components versus Apple’s own software and models.

It is also not established that every Apple Intelligence feature uses the same model, that every language has identical capabilities, or that regional versions process requests in exactly the same way. Claims beyond Apple’s descriptions should be treated as speculation unless the companies provide further technical documentation.

How to check your own Siri AI eligibility

  1. Confirm that your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro or Apple Watch appears on Apple’s current Apple Intelligence-supported-device list. iPhone 16 models are among the devices Apple lists, but the list is model-specific.
  2. Update to the software release that includes the Siri AI beta for your device.
  3. Set Siri and the device language to one of the languages Apple currently supports. English was listed for the initial beta, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish scheduled to follow the next month.
  4. Check whether your country or region is supported. Apple initially excluded the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS and said Apple Intelligence was unavailable in China while regulatory work continued.
  5. Look for Apple Intelligence and Siri settings after updating. If the feature is absent, the cause may be hardware, language, software version, region or staged rollout rather than a missing Google account.

Bottom line for the Gemini question

Siri AI does use Google Gemini technology in a specific, documented sense: Apple says its next-generation Apple Foundation Models were custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models, with Google Cloud technology supporting some demanding server-side workloads. Siri is nevertheless Apple’s assistant, integrated into Apple Intelligence and Apple operating systems. It is not the Gemini app, it is not Google Assistant, and the available statements do not show that every Siri question is sent to Google.
