Single Responsibility Principle Explained with Examples

SRP is about one coherent reason to change—not one method. Learn how to spot mixed responsibilities and refactor only when a new boundary improves cohesion.

The Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) says a class should have one coherent reason to change—not just one method. In practice, look for behaviors that respond to different stakeholders or requirements, then separate them only when that boundary improves cohesion and reduces unrelated change pressure.

What is the Single Responsibility Principle (SRP)?

SRP is the “S” in SOLID, a set of principles for object-oriented design. Robert C. Martin’s familiar formulation, quoted by Real Python, is: “A class should have only one reason to change.”

“Reason to change” is the key phrase. A class may contain several related operations and still have one responsibility. The question is whether those operations belong together because they serve the same purpose and respond to the same change drivers—or whether different stakeholders could request independent changes to unrelated behavior in the same class.

The classic wording is about classes. The same design question can also guide boundaries in modules and services, as a broader application of the underlying idea, rather than the original class-level formulation. See the Stack Overflow Blog’s discussion of SOLID and modern architecture.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How can the principle help improve object-oriented design?

When unrelated concerns share a class, a change for one concern can affect another. That coupling can make the likely impact of a change harder to reason about and make testing or maintenance more complicated. Separating genuinely independent concerns aims to keep change impact more local; it does not guarantee fewer defects or a particular maintenance-cost reduction.

SRP is therefore a way to reason about cohesion and change, not a promise of measured results. The reviewed examples and teaching material explain its rationale conceptually; they do not establish a quantified effect on productivity, maintenance cost, or defect rates.

Example: file operations and ZIP archives

Consider a FileManager class that reads and writes files and also compresses and decompresses ZIP archives. Real Python uses this pairing as an example of mixed responsibilities. File access conventions may change independently of archive-handling behavior, yet both changes would land in the same class.

A focused refactoring

Move ordinary file reading and writing into a file-access component, and ZIP compression and decompression into an archive component. Give each a name that reflects the behavior it owns. Keep a small coordinating layer only if callers need a stable operation that deliberately orchestrates both components.

This split is useful if it isolates independent change pressure. It is not a rule to extract every method: if the two behaviors change together and the separate components would add indirection without clarifying ownership, keeping them together may be easier to understand.

How to decide whether to split a class

  1. Name the behavior: describe what the class owns in a short phrase.
  2. Identify change drivers: ask which stakeholders, policies, or requirements could request changes to that behavior.
  3. Check for independent change: determine whether those requests arise separately and require unrelated edits to the same class.
  4. Extract only a cohesive boundary: if the change drivers are meaningfully independent, move a coherent responsibility into a component with a clear purpose, update callers, and run the project’s normal checks.
  5. Reassess the design: compare the new units’ cohesion, their coupling and ripple risk, and whether the boundary adds useful clarity or only indirection.

Predicting future changes takes judgment; reasonable developers can disagree about where a boundary belongs. Old Dominion University’s SOLID teaching material makes that uncertainty explicit. Use likely change and cohesion to guide the decision rather than treating a class diagram as a mechanical rule.

Common misconceptions

  • “One responsibility means one method.” No. Responsibility is about a coherent reason to change, not method count.
  • “Every noun deserves a class.” No. Extract a class when an independent change driver creates a useful boundary, not merely because a concept has a name.
  • “SRP applies only to classes.” The classic statement names classes; applying its change-boundary question to modules and services is a generalization.
  • “Applying SRP always improves code.” No. A split can make design harder to follow if it adds indirection without isolating a meaningful concern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who coined the Single Responsibility Principle?

The familiar wording is attributed to Robert C. Martin; Real Python identifies his book Agile Software Development: Principles, Patterns, and Practices as the source.

Is SRP a formal rule that every project must follow identically?

No. It is a design guideline whose application depends on likely change, cohesion, and whether a proposed boundary makes the design clearer.
