Neither model universally lasts longer. A live-service game can keep one title active for years through updates, events and community operations. A single-player series can remain commercially relevant across many releases, while each game continues earning from catalog sales, expansions, discounts and new platforms. Those are different units of longevity, so comparing them as if they were the same product produces a misleading answer.
The evidence available today does not establish a longer average lifespan, higher average lifetime profit or better risk-adjusted return for either category. The useful comparison is how each model creates value, what it costs to keep that value alive and what can make it fail.

What does “lasts longer” mean?
Before choosing a winner, define the clock. Readers commonly use “longevity” to mean at least four different things:
Recommended Free Tools
- Supported life of one game: how long the developer operates servers, ships updates or sells new content.
- Franchise life: how long a series keeps returning with sequels, remakes or spin-offs.
- Player engagement: how long people continue playing, rather than merely buying a copy.
- Commercial life: how long a game or series produces meaningful revenue.
A live-service title is usually measured as one continuing product. A single-player series is usually measured across several bounded releases. A ten-year service and a franchise with five four-year releases may both be “long-lived,” but they expose publishers to very different schedules, costs and dependencies.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—prove
Current industry figures measure different things: market forecasts, developer opinions, company-specific accounts, post-launch spending in a defined sample and country preferences. They do not form a representative survival study. There is no comparable cross-model statistic here for median supported lifespan, shutdown frequency or lifetime profit. Successful examples are visible precisely because they survived; they should not be treated as average odds.
How a live-service game creates longevity
One product, repeated reasons to return
Live service turns a game into an operating system for ongoing play. Seasons, quests, competitive resets, social events, cosmetic drops, balance changes and expansions give existing players a reason to come back and give new players a reason to join. Purchases can recur instead of ending with the initial sale.
Walter Driver, cofounder and co-CEO of Scopely, described the retention logic in a 2025 Game Theory podcast made in partnership with McKinsey: The only reason to engage with the same product for many years is because it’s getting better the more you play it.
That improvement can come from content, convenience, social relationships or mastery, but it has to be felt by the audience. A calendar full of monetization prompts without meaningful improvement can reduce trust rather than extend life.

The quote describes a particularly successful ecosystem, not a guaranteed path for every service.
The continuing-cost bargain
The same cadence that creates recurring revenue also creates a permanent obligation. Teams must plan content, maintain infrastructure, monitor security, handle support, moderate communities, test patches across hardware and respond to player feedback. A content gap can cause players to migrate to another service; a rushed update can damage the trust that makes long-term spending possible.

Availability is another dependency. If a title requires hosted services, continued access can depend on the operator keeping those services running. The evidence does not establish how often individual games shut down or whether any particular game offers a complete offline mode, so those questions must be checked title by title rather than inferred from the category.
What the market figures actually say
McKinsey estimated the live-operations market at roughly $147 billion in 2026 and projected about $167 billion by 2030, approximately a 3% compound annual growth rate. It separately projected console live-operations revenue growing at 7% annually toward parity with full-game sales. These are market estimates and forecasts, not measurements of how long an average game survives or which model is more profitable.

| Console live-operations growth | 7% CAGR projection to parity with full-game sales | Expected segment growth, not evidence that services outlast single-player games |
Developer interest reveals supply risk, not lifespan
The Game Developers Conference’s 2025 State of the Game Industry survey found that 13% of respondents were interested in making a live-service game next, 42% were not interested and 29% were unsure or not applicable. Sixteen percent said they already worked on live-service games; among AAA respondents, that rose to 33%. These are survey responses, not counts of games entering production.
The same report names Fortnite, Warframe and Genshin Impact as continuing successes while contrasting them with Concord, Anthem and Redfall. Respondents raised concerns about saturation, declining interest, creative stagnation, aggressive monetization and burnout. The contrast demonstrates variance: a few services can become durable platforms while many attempts compete for the same limited attention. It does not provide a percentage chance that a new service will survive.
How single-player games build a long commercial tail
A finished campaign is not the end of revenue
A self-contained game can continue selling after launch as its price falls, enters a bundle, reaches another platform or becomes part of a franchise catalog. Expansions and cosmetic or gameplay DLC can add years of revenue without requiring the publisher to operate a permanent, always-online world. A sequel can also renew interest in earlier entries: a new release often sends players back to the catalog.

This model concentrates more risk around each launch, but it does not make the product “fire and forget.” Production updates, patches, accessibility work, ports, downloadable content and community support still require money and staff. The difference is that the publisher can choose when to stop active development while leaving a playable product in the catalog, subject to that game’s platform, licensing and digital-rights conditions.
What Newzoo found about DLC
Newzoo’s November 25, 2025 analysis examined PC, Xbox and PlayStation data from April 2020 through May 2025 in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. In its comparison, excluding premium-only titles, DLC represented 9% of first-year revenue and 23% in years two through five. Newzoo said the later-period share stabilized around 20–25%.
| Period in Newzoo’s sample | DLC share of revenue | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| First year | 9% | PC, Xbox and PlayStation; six listed Western markets; premium-only titles excluded |
| Years two through five | 23% | Same defined sample; later-period share reported as stabilizing around 20–25% |
Those percentages show that post-launch content can materially extend a single-player game’s earning period. They are not an average for every single-player title, nor proof that DLC revenue matches the recurring revenue of a service.
A tracked example, not a typical result
Newzoo’s example of HITMAN: World of Assassination combines narrative and gameplay DLC, new modes, seasonal collaborations and platform expansions. Newzoo tracked between $150,000 and $1.4 million in monthly DLC revenue over four years, equal to 21% of its tracked revenue. Because this is one tracked product measured with a stated methodology, it demonstrates a possible long tail rather than a normal outcome.
Audience demand remains substantial

| Country | Reported single-player preference |
|---|---|
| Japan | 67% |
| United States | 58% |
| United Kingdom | 55% |
| South Korea | 53% |
| Germany | 50% |
| France | 48% |
These are country-level preferences, not sales shares and not evidence that a single-player game remains active longer. They do show why a publisher can continue building a series around campaign-focused demand even while live operations grow.
Live service and single-player series compared
| Axis | Live-service game | Single-player series |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of longevity | One title may operate through seasons, events and updates. | A franchise continues through sequels even when each release is a bounded experience. |
| Revenue pattern | Ongoing purchases and extra content can make revenue recurring. | Upfront sales can be extended by DLC, discounts, catalog sales and platform releases. |
| Operating burden | Requires content cadence, servers, technical support, moderation and community trust. | Often allows lower post-launch development budgets than a live-service title, although DLC and updates still require investment. |
| Main concentration risk | Must win and retain attention in a crowded field; entrenched incumbents make entry difficult. | Each launch can be a sharp commercial test, but older releases and the broader franchise can keep creating value. |
| Availability dependency | Hosted features may depend on continued operation; shutdown rates and offline options vary by title. | A self-contained game may remain playable without continuous operations, but platform support, DRM and licensing still vary. |
| Evidence limitation | Long-lived hits are survivorship examples, not the average result. | Long-running franchises and successful DLC examples are also not proof of average returns. |
What successful examples reveal
Minecraft and Candy Crush: ecosystems compound longevity
Microsoft’s May 2026 account of a Game Developers Conference discussion with Mojang and King describes two unusually durable products. Candy Crush Saga grew from 65 initial levels to more than 22,000. Microsoft reported that Minecraft had received free updates for more than 17 years by that article’s publication, and described an ecosystem spanning Java, Bedrock and Education editions, a creator economy and availability on more than 20 platforms.
The Mojang passage explains the relationship strategy: We’ve been updating Minecraft for about 17 years now and we’ve never charged for an update. That’s been very deliberate because we want to maintain a strong relationship with our players.
The source attributes the passage to Mojang but does not establish a named speaker in the available text. The lesson is not that free updates guarantee longevity; it is that trust, reach, creator participation and a sustained stream of reasons to play can reinforce one another.
Single-player content can also become a platform
The HITMAN example shows that a primarily single-player experience can receive recurring modes, collaborations and expansions without becoming a conventional always-online service. Its four-year DLC record illustrates how a bounded game can be refreshed while remaining part of a catalog. The boundary between models is therefore practical rather than absolute: a campaign game may add live elements, and a service may contain substantial one-time narrative content.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Recurring revenue is not exclusive to one model
Electronic Arts’ 2024 filing defines recurring revenue as including live services, annual sports titles and catalog titles. Its FY2026 report says live-services net revenue includes Ultimate Team extra content. The company also reported that digital units represented 81% of its console unit sales in fiscal 2026, compared with 78% in fiscal 2025 and 73% in fiscal 2024. Those calculations cover Xbox One/Series X and PlayStation 4/5 units, use platform data for digital units and estimates for packaged sales, and are EA-specific rather than global market shares.
Best Value
EA’s framework matters because it separates “recurring” from “live service” as a single category: annual releases and catalog sales can also produce repeatable income. It still does not compare the lifetime profitability of one live-service title with one single-player franchise.
Where each model can fail
Live-service failure modes
- Attention is finite: a new game must displace established habits, friends lists and spending routines.
- Cadence becomes a tax: missing updates can reduce engagement, while rushed updates create bugs and balance problems.
- Monetization can erode trust: players may reject practices they view as predatory, especially when content feels withheld.
- Operations never fully end: infrastructure, security, moderation and support remain costs even when growth slows.
- Service dependence limits access: a shutdown can affect playability or purchased features, depending on the title’s design and platform rules.
The GDC survey’s comments include the anonymous observation, “Live-service is just a wrapper on the experience.” That criticism captures a design risk: recurring payment systems cannot substitute for a compelling core game.
Single-player failure modes
- Launch concentration: a campaign game can earn most of its sales before reviews, word of mouth and discounting have time to build a catalog audience.
- High production expectations: cinematic scope, content volume and long development cycles can make a single release expensive to recover.
- Weak post-launch planning: poorly targeted DLC or an expensive port may not create enough incremental demand.
- Franchise fatigue: sequels can dilute interest if they repeat a formula without meaningful improvement.
- Platform and rights limits: a title may remain in a catalog only while its storefront, licensing and technical support continue.
How to judge longevity for a specific game or series
Use the following questions instead of asking whether an entire category is sustainable:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Identify the unit. Are you measuring one game’s supported operation, a franchise’s release history, active players or revenue?
- Map the value engine. For a service, list the update cadence, social network, content pipeline and monetization. For a single-player release, list DLC plans, catalog strategy, platforms and sequel potential.
- Count continuing costs. Include servers, moderation, customer support and regular content for a service; include patches, ports, licensing and DLC teams for a single-player title.
- Test dependency. Determine whether the game requires online authentication, hosted matchmaking or a platform account, and what remains playable if those systems stop.
- Separate outliers from evidence. Minecraft, Candy Crush Saga, HITMAN: World of Assassination and major live-service successes show what is possible, not what a typical project will achieve.
- Check audience fit. A large addressable audience does not ensure retention; the product must offer a reason to return that competitors cannot easily copy.
- Model more than launch revenue. Include discounts, catalog sales, DLC, expansions, annual releases and platform expansion rather than treating the first sales window as the whole business.
So, which model lasts longer?
If “lasts longer” means one continuously supported title, live service has the clearer mechanism: recurring updates can keep the same product active for many years. That mechanism comes with ongoing operating costs, dependence on player attention and possible loss of access if hosted services end.
If it means a commercial property that keeps returning and earning, a single-player series can last just as long—or longer—through sequels, catalog sales, DLC, discounts and platform expansion. Individual releases can be finished products while the franchise continues evolving.
The defensible conclusion is therefore conditional, not categorical. Longevity is determined by execution, product-market fit, retention, cost discipline, trust, platform reach and the specific meaning of “life.” The available figures show a large and growing live-operations business, meaningful post-launch revenue for some single-player games and strong demand for both approaches. They do not show that one model has a longer average lifespan or superior average profitability.
