A man in Singapore faces two charges after police said he created an AI-generated crocodile image at Pandan Reservoir and sent it to a colleague. The report prompted a precautionary suspension of water activities and search operations. The headline’s “10 years” is the combined maximum prison time attached to the two charges—not a sentence imposed or a prediction of what he will receive.
What happened at Pandan Reservoir
Singapore Police said on 28 September 2026 that a 30-year-old man would be charged the next day. According to police, PUB was alerted on 20 August to a crocodile sighting at Pandan Reservoir. The public was advised to exercise caution, water activities were suspended, and PUB and the National Parks Board carried out search and capture operations. PUB later found the photograph fake and referred the matter to police on 21 August. Singapore Police Force

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the man created an AI-generated image depicting a crocodile at the reservoir and sent it to a colleague. CNA reported that Ye Lin, a Myanmar national, was charged on 29 September with communicating a false message and obstructing the course of justice. These are allegations; the sources do not establish a finding of guilt. CNA’s court report

The episode shows how an unverified image can trigger real public-safety work even before its authenticity is settled. The agencies’ response was to take precautions and investigate, rather than treat the image as proof that a crocodile was present.
Why AI-detection tools did not settle the image’s authenticity
PUB told CNA on 1 October that it had used several AI-detection tools, but their results were inconclusive. PUB said it acted quickly and took necessary precautionary measures in the interest of public safety. CNA did not identify the tools or explain the technical method by which the image was ultimately established to be AI-generated. The report therefore does not support claims that a particular detector or watermark conclusively identified it. CNA’s report on PUB’s AI-tool checks
