If Windows says simulator.dll is missing, cannot be found, or cannot start, do not download a copy from a random DLL website. First repair Windows’ component store and protected files with Microsoft’s documented DISM-then-SFC sequence. If that does not restore the file, identify the application that owns it and repair or reinstall that application from its official installer. The Microsoft pages reviewed here do not identify simulator.dll as a standard Windows component, so the owning program matters.
What the simulator.dll message means
A DLL is a shared library that a Windows program loads when it starts or performs a particular task. A message that names simulator.dll means the program expected that file but Windows could not use it at that moment. The immediate cause may be a missing file, corruption, an incomplete application installation, or a damaged Windows component needed during the load. The message alone does not establish which program supplied the DLL.

Microsoft’s published guidance does not list simulator.dll as a standard Windows component or identify an owning application. Treat it as application-specific until you confirm otherwise. The exact program name in the dialog, the shortcut you used, Event Viewer, and the installed-app record are the best clues.
Is simulator.dll safe to download?
There is no single generic copy that is safe for every computer. DLLs are versioned and are built for a particular application, architecture, and release. A file from an unverified download site may be the wrong build, may not include the application’s other files, or may have been altered. Microsoft’s repair guidance does not endorse obtaining this file from a random DLL repository.

simulator.dllor replace the file with one taken from a different PC. - Use Windows repair for protected system files, and use the owning application’s official repair or reinstall process for an application file.
If a vendor’s official installer or support page supplies a replacement, verify that it is for your exact application version and Windows architecture. When the owner is unknown, identify it before replacing anything.
Before changing files, capture the error and identify the program
- Record the complete message. Note whether it says “simulator.dll was not found,” “cannot start,” or names another file as a dependency. Write down the program name and the action that triggered the message.
- Try the program’s normal shortcut again. If the error appears only for one application, that is evidence the DLL is application-specific. If several unrelated programs fail, prioritize Windows system repair.
- Check installed applications. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. Search for the program that produced the message and note its publisher and version.
- Review Event Viewer when the dialog is vague. Press
Win, type Event Viewer, and open it. Check Windows Logs > Application around the time of the failure. An event may name the executable, installation path, or a related module. Use that path to distinguish an application-owned DLL from a protected Windows file. - Check the application’s installation record. A desktop shortcut’s Properties dialog shows the target executable. The executable’s folder often reveals which product installed the DLL. Do not delete or replace files yet; this step is for identification.
Run Microsoft’s repair sequence in the correct order
Microsoft Support recommends repairing the Windows component store with DISM and then checking protected system files with System File Checker (SFC). DISM may take several minutes and normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. Run both commands from an elevated Command Prompt.
1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. The window title should indicate administrator rights.
Microsoft Learn states that you must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC. If the command window is not elevated, the scan can fail or be unable to repair files.

2. Repair the component store with DISM
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for the operation to reach completion. Do not close the window just because the percentage appears to pause; several-minute pauses are normal. DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses as a source for protected-file repairs.
3. Run SFC after DISM finishes
sfc /scannow
SFC scans protected system files and attempts to replace corrupted copies with a cached copy. Let the scan reach 100 percent before closing Command Prompt, then read the final result instead of repeating the command without a change in symptoms.
Understand the SFC result
| SFC result | What it establishes | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. | SFC found no corruption in the protected files it checked. This does not prove that an application-owned simulator.dll exists or that the affected program is installed correctly. |
Identify the owning application and use its official repair or reinstall option. |
| Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. | SFC repaired protected Windows files. | Restart Windows and test the program again. If the same message remains, continue with application repair. |
| Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. | Some protected-file repairs failed. | Review the CBS log, then retry only after addressing the reported condition or proceed to recovery if Windows remains damaged. |
| Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. | The scan did not complete. | Confirm the Command Prompt is elevated, restart Windows, and run the sequence again. If it still fails, use the log and Windows recovery options rather than replacing a DLL manually. |

When SFC reports unrepaired corruption, Microsoft Support directs you to the Component-Based Servicing log at %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log (or to an extracted details file) to identify the affected file and review the repair result.

simulator.dlland for entries containingCannot repairorRepair failed. - Check the path recorded in the log. A path under a Windows servicing directory is different from a path under an application’s installation folder.
If the log does not mention simulator.dll, SFC did not identify it as a protected Windows file. That result points back to the application that generated the error rather than to a missing Windows component.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use a targeted SFC check only after you know the full path
Microsoft Learn documents two file-specific options. The path must be the actual full path expected by the application; do not guess it from the filename alone.
Scan and attempt to repair one file
sfc /scanfile=C:pathtosimulator.dll
Replace C:pathtosimulator.dll with the path you established from the application, Event Viewer, or the CBS log. This option is useful only when the file is a protected system file that SFC manages. It will not reconstruct an application’s private installation from an unrelated source.

Verify one file without repairing it
sfc /verifyfile=C:pathtosimulator.dll
/verifyfile checks the specified file without attempting a repair. Use it when you need to confirm the integrity status before making an application-level change.
Repair or reinstall the application that owns simulator.dll
If DISM and SFC finish successfully but the message remains, the owning application is the next escalation. This is generally safer than copying a DLL from elsewhere because the installer restores the matching executable, libraries, registry entries, and dependencies together.
Recommended Free Tools
Try the built-in repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10).
- Select the application that produced the error, open its additional options, and choose Advanced options when available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish without removing the application’s data.
- Restart the application and test the same action that triggered the error.
Not every desktop program exposes a Windows Repair button. Some provide a Repair choice in their own uninstaller or setup program instead.
Best Value
Reinstall from the official source
- Back up documents, profiles, saved projects, or license information associated with the application.
- Uninstall the affected program from Windows Settings or its own uninstaller.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Obtain the installer from the application publisher’s official distribution channel and install the version intended for your Windows edition and processor architecture.
- Apply the application’s own updates, then test it before restoring optional plug-ins or modifications.
If the error started immediately after an application update, reinstalling the same release may not help; use the publisher’s documented rollback or support process for that product. The available evidence does not identify which application owns simulator.dll, so the exact menu names and release policy depend on the program you find.
When Windows repair itself still fails
Microsoft says that, after reviewing SFC details, a known-good copy may be used for a specifically identified corrupted system file, and that reinstalling Windows may be necessary when repair steps do not work. Do not apply that advice to an unidentified application DLL: first confirm the owner and use the application’s installer.
For a confirmed protected Windows file
Use only a known-good copy that matches the exact Windows edition and build, and follow Microsoft’s servicing guidance for placing it. A file copied from another computer or another build can create a new mismatch. If you cannot establish a trustworthy matching source, move to Windows recovery rather than improvising.

Use the application’s repair or reinstall path, then contact that publisher if the official installer still produces the error. Keep the Event Viewer entry, the exact dialog text, the application version, and the SFC result so support can distinguish an installation problem from a Windows problem.
For persistent Windows corruption
Back up personal data and use Windows recovery options appropriate to your edition. A Windows reinstall is a last resort because it can remove applications and settings. Follow the on-screen recovery documentation and verify that you have installation media, account access, and backups before proceeding.
Common mistakes that make the error harder to fix
- Downloading the first matching DLL: The filename does not identify the correct publisher, version, or architecture.
- Running SFC before DISM: Microsoft’s documented sequence is DISM first, then SFC, so the component store is available as a repair source.
- Using a non-administrator window: SFC requires administrator membership.
- Repeating a clean SFC result: A clean result does not restore an application file that SFC does not own.
- Replacing a file before recording its path: Without the path, you cannot tell whether the DLL belongs to Windows or to one application.
- Deleting the application folder manually: Manual deletion can leave registration and uninstaller records inconsistent. Use the application’s uninstall or repair process.
Quick decision guide
| Option | Safety | Scope | Access needed | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DISM followed by SFC | Microsoft’s built-in Windows repair path | Windows component store and protected files | Administrator Command Prompt | Windows files may be damaged or several programs show system errors |
sfc /scanfile or /verifyfile |
Built-in, but dependent on an accurate full path | One identified protected file | Administrator Command Prompt | The CBS log or another authoritative record identifies the file |
| Application Repair | Restores the product through its own installer | The affected application and its files | Usually an administrator approval | Only one program reports simulator.dll |
| Application reinstall | Official installer is safer than an unverified DLL source | Complete application installation | Administrator approval and backup of app data | Repair does not restore the file |
| Windows recovery or reinstall | Broadest change; back up first | Windows installation and settings | Recovery or installation access | Documented system corruption persists after repair |
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and offer tools such as a real-time boost and crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, includes a free trial by category of at least two days, and then requires a subscription; results vary, it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and no tool repairs every crash.
What to do after the repair
- Restart Windows after DISM/SFC or an application reinstall when prompted.
- Launch the exact program that produced the message and repeat the original action.
- Confirm that the error no longer appears in Event Viewer.
- Keep the SFC result and application version noted in case the problem returns.
The reliable path is therefore: repair Windows with DISM and SFC, interpret the result, identify who owns simulator.dll, and repair or reinstall that program through an official channel. A random DLL download is not a substitute for establishing the file’s owner and version.
