SimpleLogin alternatives for protecting your email address

Short answer: Choose addy.io if open-source forwarding and custom domains matter most; choose Firefox Relay for browser-integrated masks, while checking whether its paid tiers are available in your region; choose Fastmail Masked Email or Apple Hide My Email if you already use those ecosystems. DuckDuckGo Email Protection may suit a free, simple workflow, but its current official limits should be verified before relying on it. No service is universally best: reply support, alias limits, custom-domain portability, filtering controls, and provider privacy terms determine the right fit.

What an email mask does

An email mask is a forwarding address that stands between a website and your real mailbox. You give the mask to a store, newsletter, app, or forum. The masking provider receives mail sent to that address and relays it to your underlying inbox. You can normally disable or delete the mask without changing your primary address.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Using a different alias for each signup limits how widely your main address is exposed. If an alias starts receiving an unexpected marketing campaign, you know which service used it and can block that address. Mozilla product manager Santiago Andrigo described the benefit to AP News this way: “Masking your email gives you control — if you start receiving unwanted messages, you can easily block any emails coming to that email mask.”

Forwarding is not the same as end-to-end encryption or complete anonymity. The provider handles message traffic, so read its privacy policy, retention terms, and legal-disclosure practices. A mask also cannot guarantee that a sender will not identify you through your name, payment details, IP address, browser fingerprint, or other account information.

Receiving mail is only half of the job. Order changes, account recovery, returns, and support conversations often require a reply. AP News quoted Proton CEO Andy Yen: “Then the ability to reply is actually pretty important.” Before moving important accounts, confirm whether the service supports replies from an alias and whether you can initiate a new outbound message, rather than merely responding to an incoming thread.

Plus-addressing, such as [email protected], is a weaker substitute. It may help sort mail, but it commonly leaves the base address visible; Yen noted that someone can “simply take away the plus and get your original address.”

Option Best fit Verified features and limits Main qualification
SimpleLogin (baseline) Readers who want a dedicated alias manager Free plan: 10 aliases and one mailbox. Premium: $36 per year or $4 billed monthly, with unlimited aliases, custom domains and mailboxes, catch-all, outbound messages from aliases, and PGP. Existing aliases continue receiving and sending after cancellation, but creating aliases above the free allowance and some management functions are restricted. Use these figures as a dated reference point, not a permanent price promise.
addy.io Open-source-minded users and custom-domain owners Free: 10 active shared-domain aliases. Lite: $1 per month when billed yearly, one custom domain, 50 active shared aliases, and 50 anonymous replies or sends per day. Pro: $3 per month when billed yearly, 20 custom domains, and 200 daily anonymous replies or sends. The free plan’s stated active shared-domain limit is 10. Do not confuse that limit with wording about unlimited standard aliases.
Firefox Relay People who want browser-vendor-backed masking The official page lists five free masks. Paid tiers list unlimited masks, tracker removal, promotional-email blocking, and anonymous replies. The same page currently displays waitlists for paid tiers. Treat paid access as availability-dependent rather than generally purchasable.
Fastmail Masked Email People seeking an email provider plus masking Fastmail says each login can use a unique masked address. It documents personal-domain use for portability and integrations with 1Password and Bitwarden. This is a feature inside a broader email service, not a like-for-like standalone alias subscription. The cited material does not state a separate Masked Email price.
Apple Hide My Email Users already using Sign in with Apple or iCloud+ Sign in with Apple creates a unique random forwarding address for the app or site and restricts forwarding to designated sender addresses. iCloud+ subscribers can change the forwarding destination. The documented Sign in with Apple behavior applies to accounts created through that flow. It should not be assumed to include every feature of a dedicated alias manager.
DuckDuckGo Email Protection Readers looking for a simple free option A 2026 secondary comparison describes unlimited @duck.com addresses and tracker stripping. Current official details were not accessible for verification here. Confirm present limits, reply behavior, and retention terms directly before depending on it for important accounts.

How to choose by priority

Choose addy.io for open-source orientation and custom domains

addy.io is the clearest fit when you want a dedicated forwarding service, control over your aliases, and the option to attach domains you own. Its tiers distinguish between shared-domain aliases, custom domains, and daily anonymous reply or send allowances. That separation matters if you expect to answer many customer-service messages: an apparently generous alias count does not automatically provide unlimited outbound use.

Custom-domain support can make migration easier. If your address is [email protected], you can change the forwarding provider later while keeping the public address, provided you retain the domain and update its DNS records. You remain responsible for domain registration, renewal, DNS configuration, and any provider-specific verification.

Choose Firefox Relay for browser-centered masking

Firefox Relay is attractive when you want masks generated as part of a browser workflow rather than managing a separate mail system. The official listing provides a small free allowance and describes paid controls such as tracker removal, promotional-message blocking, and anonymous replies. Because paid tiers are currently shown with waitlists, check the sign-up screen in your country before planning around unlimited masks or paid-only controls.

A browser-integrated tool is convenient on supported devices, but think about portability. If you regularly use another browser, a work computer, a phone, or a non-browser mail client, verify that you can still create, inspect, disable, and reply through your account without depending on one browser installation.

Choose Fastmail Masked Email when you also want hosted mail

Fastmail combines mailbox hosting with masked addresses. Its documentation says you can create a unique mask for each login and use a personal domain for greater portability. Integration with 1Password and Bitwarden can place mask creation alongside password generation, which is useful when registering many accounts.

The trade-off is architectural: you are adopting an email provider, not merely adding a forwarding layer to an existing mailbox. Evaluate mailbox migration, client support, storage, calendar features, and export options in addition to alias behavior. The available product information does not establish a separate price for Masked Email, so compare the complete Fastmail plan you would actually need.

Choose Apple Hide My Email when your accounts already live with Apple

Sign in with Apple can generate a different random forwarding address for each app or website. Apple limits forwarding to designated sender addresses, reducing the chance that unrelated senders can use the alias. For iCloud+ subscribers, Apple documents the ability to change where those messages are forwarded.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

This is particularly convenient when creating new accounts through Sign in with Apple. It is not evidence that every ordinary web signup can use the same workflow, nor that Apple provides the catch-all, custom-domain, outbound-alias, or bulk-management controls found in dedicated services. Treat it as an ecosystem feature with a narrower documented scope.

Consider DuckDuckGo Email Protection only after checking current terms

Secondary 2026 comparison material describes unlimited @duck.com addresses and tracker stripping, which would make the service appealing for low-friction masking. However, current official feature and policy details were not available to verify for this comparison. Before routing receipts, account recovery mail, or business correspondence through it, confirm whether aliases can be disabled individually, whether replies preserve your mask, how long messages are retained, and whether any regional restrictions apply.

Compare the details that affect everyday use

Alias limits and downgrade behavior

Count three separate limits: how many aliases you may create, how many may remain active, and how many outbound replies or sends are allowed per day. A plan can advertise broad alias creation while imposing a smaller active or sending allowance. Also ask what happens when a subscription ends. SimpleLogin’s published terms, for example, allow existing aliases to keep receiving and sending after cancellation while restricting new creation above the free allowance and some management actions. Other providers may suspend, recycle, or preserve aliases differently.

For long-lived accounts, preserve an export or written inventory of aliases, the service they identify, and the date each was created. An inventory prevents you from disabling an address that still receives password resets or tax records.

Custom domains and portability

A provider-owned address is easy to create but tied to that provider’s domain. A personal domain separates the public address from the forwarding company, making a future move less disruptive. Portability is not automatic: you need control of the domain, access to its DNS, and a destination service that supports the required records.

Expect to configure records such as MX and, depending on the provider, SPF, DKIM, or DMARC-related settings. Do not copy generic values from another service. Use the exact records supplied for your domain and verify propagation before changing all accounts. Keep the old forwarding route active while testing the new one so that password resets are not lost during the switch.

Replying and sending from an alias

Ask four questions before choosing a service:

  • Can you reply to a message while keeping the alias in the From field?
  • Can you start a new message from the alias, or only answer an existing thread?
  • Are replies anonymous, and is there a daily allowance?
  • What happens when the recipient replies to your masked response?

These details matter for purchases, reservations, account support, and returns. Test with a low-risk newsletter or your own second mailbox before changing a high-value account.

Filtering and control tools

Look for per-alias disable or deletion, spam handling, tracker removal, promotional-message controls, and catch-all behavior. Disabling one alias is safer than abandoning an entire mailbox when a single merchant starts sending unwanted mail. Catch-all addresses can simplify custom-domain use, but they may also accept more unsolicited mail; decide whether convenience outweighs filtering work.

Privacy, retention, and legal accountability

A forwarding provider necessarily processes address metadata and message content while relaying mail. Read its privacy policy for collection, retention, automated scanning, disclosure requests, and account-deletion procedures. AP News quoted Andy Yen advising users to look for proper terms, a clear privacy policy, and legal accountability. Do not infer end-to-end encryption merely from the presence of an alias.

Set up a masking workflow safely

  1. List the accounts to protect. Start with newsletters, retailers, trial software, forums, and other services that do not need your permanent address. Keep banking, government, employment, and critical recovery addresses separate until you understand the provider’s reliability and support.
  2. Create the account with a strong, unique password. Store it in your password manager and enable multi-factor authentication if the provider offers it. Your masking account controls many forwarding addresses, so losing it can be more serious than losing one newsletter login.
  3. Generate one alias per service. Use a naming pattern that identifies the destination without exposing unnecessary personal information, such as a random local part or a short merchant code. Avoid putting your full name, birth date, or phone number in the alias.
  4. Confirm delivery. Send a test message from a separate mailbox and check arrival time, spam placement, subject preservation, attachments, and display of the original sender. Do not assume a successful account creation means forwarding is configured correctly.
  5. Test a reply before relying on it. Reply to the test message and verify the recipient sees the alias rather than your primary address. If the service supports new outbound messages, send one and check the return path.
  6. Record the alias. Save it beside the account entry in your password manager. Include the provider, creation date, and whether the address is used for recovery or billing.
  7. Disable selectively. If an alias attracts spam, pause or delete that address rather than changing your main mailbox. First move any account that still needs the address for recovery.

Migrating from SimpleLogin

Migration is safer as a staged cutover than as an immediate cancellation.

  1. Inventory every alias. Export or manually record the alias, destination service, login email, recovery role, and whether you have ever replied from it.
  2. Separate critical addresses. Mark password resets, purchases, subscriptions, invoices, and identity-verification accounts. These need a confirmed replacement before any old alias is disabled.
  3. Choose a destination model. Move to a dedicated forwarder if you want an existing mailbox to remain central; choose a hosted provider if you also want to migrate mail; use an ecosystem feature when most new accounts are created inside that ecosystem.
  4. Move your domain carefully. Lower DNS time-to-live ahead of the change when practical, copy only the new provider’s records, verify ownership, and test both incoming and outgoing mail. Keep the previous route available during propagation.
  5. Update accounts in batches. Start with low-risk newsletters, then retailers and services, and finish with recovery and billing addresses after testing. Keep a dated log so you can reverse a change.
  6. Retain the old service during the overlap. Do not cancel until critical aliases have received test messages and you have confirmed that replies reach the intended destination. The old service’s post-cancellation behavior may preserve existing aliases, but restrictions on creation or management can still affect recovery.

Common failure modes and fixes

A verification message never arrives

Check the alias spelling, provider dashboard, spam folder, forwarding destination, and whether the sender has been blocked. Send a test from another mailbox. If a custom domain is involved, verify MX records and allow time for DNS propagation before changing additional accounts.

The recipient sees your real address

Stop replying until you know the service’s reply path. Some systems require replying from a dashboard or a specially formatted address; a normal mail-client reply may expose the underlying mailbox. Test with a harmless message and inspect the recipient-visible From and Reply-To fields.

An alias receives unwanted mail

Disable that alias, then update any legitimate account that still uses it. Per-service aliases make this containment possible; a single shared address does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You exceed a sending or alias allowance

Review active aliases separately from total aliases and check daily anonymous-reply quotas. Delete stale test addresses, consolidate low-value signups, or move a custom domain to a tier that explicitly supports the required volume. Do not assume that an unlimited alias phrase includes unlimited sending.

You lose access to the forwarding account

Use a unique password, multi-factor authentication, recovery codes, and an up-to-date recovery address. Keep your alias inventory offline or in a protected password-manager note. The inventory cannot restore forwarding by itself, but it tells you which accounts require urgent email changes.

A practical decision framework

Use this order when two services appear similar:

  1. Define the mailbox you want to keep. If you already have a dependable mailbox and only need aliases, a standalone forwarder is simpler. If you want new hosted mail as well, evaluate a provider such as Fastmail as a complete service.
  2. Decide whether you need a personal domain. Choose a service with documented custom-domain support when preserving addresses across future provider changes is important.
  3. Estimate outbound use. Occasional newsletter signups need less than purchase support, account administration, or customer-service work. Compare anonymous reply and send limits, not just alias counts.
  4. Check your devices and browsers. Ecosystem tools are convenient when they match your devices; dedicated services are generally easier to carry across unrelated platforms, subject to their client support.
  5. Read privacy and retention terms. Forwarding requires trust in the intermediary. Choose a provider whose data handling and legal policies you understand.
  6. Run a small pilot. Create a few low-risk aliases, test delivery and replies for several days, and only then migrate important accounts.

Bottom line

For most readers comparing SimpleLogin alternatives, addy.io is the strongest dedicated option when open-source orientation, custom domains, and published reply limits align with your needs. Firefox Relay is compelling for browser-based masking but requires checking its paid-tier waitlist. Fastmail Masked Email and Apple Hide My Email are sensible when you already depend on those ecosystems, while DuckDuckGo Email Protection deserves verification before use for critical mail. Whichever route you choose, use one alias per service, test replies, keep an alias inventory, and treat the forwarding provider as a party that handles your messages rather than as a guarantee of anonymity.
