Simon Peter’s MiniDexed Runs Up to Eight DX7-Style Synths on a Raspberry Pi

MiniDexed is a bare-metal Raspberry Pi FM synthesizer that can run up to eight DX7-style tone generators at once on Raspberry Pi 2 and newer, according to its official repository. It is software inspired by the Yamaha DX7—not eight physical keyboards or a claim that a Pi exactly reproduces Yamaha hardware.

What MiniDexed does

Created by Simon Peter, also known as Probono, MiniDexed brings the Dexed family of FM synthesis software to Raspberry Pi hardware. Unlike a conventional Raspberry Pi music application, it runs bare-metal, without booting Linux. The project builds on Synth_Dexed, Circle and circle-stdlib, as its repository explains.

Dexed is a multi-platform software synthesizer closely modelled on the Yamaha DX7. Its project repository describes it as a tool and companion for the original instrument. MiniDexed adapts that approach for a Pi, using multiple tone generators that can be mixed together. The eight-generator setup recalls Yamaha’s TX816/TX802 configurations, but it remains a software implementation, not a hardware equivalent.

How many tone generators each Pi can run

Raspberry Pi model Documented tone-generator capability Qualification
Pi 1 and original Pi Zero One The MiniDexed repository documents these as limited to one tone generator.
Pi 2, 3, 4 and 400 Up to eight The repository documents eight simultaneous tone generators on Pi 2 and newer.
Pi 5 Experimental support The repository marks support experimental; it notes HDMI sound and USB Gadget mode are unavailable and the software does not currently use the Pi 5’s additional processing power.

These are capabilities stated in the project’s current documentation, not independently measured performance results or a permanent hardware guarantee. Check the current release notes and README before choosing a board.

Audio output options

MiniDexed’s README lists several ways to get sound from the Pi. A dedicated supported DAC is the project’s recommended option for sound quality; the documented DAC families include PCM5102A- and PCM5122-based boards. HDMI can also carry audio, including through an audio extractor, while some Pi models offer a headphone jack with quality caveats.

DAC compatibility is not universal. The hardware wiki says the maintainers do not know whether every other DAC works; I2S-only designs are more likely to work than units that also need I2C initialization. Check the wiki and the chosen DAC’s requirements rather than assuming any board in a broad product category will work. Raspberry Pi Zero and Zero 2 require HDMI or a supported I2S DAC for audio output, according to the repository.

For MIDI input, the default USB host mode accepts class-compliant USB MIDI devices. On some Pi models, USB Gadget mode can instead make the Pi appear as a USB MIDI device. These are different roles and cannot be used at the same time. Classic MIDI can also use the Pi serial port with an appropriate interface; do not connect a 5V logic-level MIDI signal directly to the Pi’s RX pin, which the hardware guide warns can damage the board.

Getting started

  1. Choose a supported Raspberry Pi model and download a compiled MiniDexed release from the official repository.
  2. Unpack the release files onto the root of an SD card formatted as FAT32.
  3. Edit minidexed.ini to select the audio output path you intend to use.
  4. Connect the audio hardware and, if needed, your MIDI device and optional controls. Follow the hardware wiki for board-specific wiring and power guidance.
  5. Insert the card and boot the Pi. For model-specific setup and troubleshooting—including Pi 4 firmware, LCD address, voice files and USB—use the current release documentation.

MiniDexed loads .syx voice files, responds to Program Change and Bank Change messages, and supports voice editing over MIDI SysEx with DX-series editors such as Dexed. The project also includes compressor and reverb effects, according to its README.

Why the project was built this way

Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s June 2024 profile says Peter began MiniDexed in 2022 during a discussion around Circle, a bare-metal library. The aim was to make the result feel like a musical instrument rather than a computer. The project description quoted in the magazine calls it a “Dexed FM synthesiser similar to 8x DX7 (TX816/TX802) running on a bare-metal Raspberry Pi (without a Linux kernel or operating system).” That phrasing captures the concept, while the repository’s board-specific limits clarify what the eight-synth claim means in practice.
