Silver Pines is drawing unusually strong early reviews, with critics praising its noir atmosphere, art direction and mystery. That makes it a promising 2026 release, though a still-developing review sample and the absence of player reviews mean it is too soon to call it one of the year’s settled best.

What is Silver Pines?

Silver Pines is a single-player survival-horror metroidvania from developer Wych Elm and publisher Team17. You play private investigator Red Walker, hired to find Eddie Velvet, a missing musician. The search takes Walker through a half-abandoned American town and into a dark mystery. The Steam store description introduces the case as a job to track down a musician who has vanished in a place “half-abandoned, half-forgotten.”

Exploration and locked routes are central: tools and weapons open access to new areas, while puzzles, monsters and scarce resources make progress risky. The structure pairs the backtracking and map exploration of a metroidvania with survival-horror combat and detective-fiction investigation.

Why are early reviews so positive?

A Pure Xbox roundup published in October 2026 lists critic scores from 7/10 to 10/10, including 10/10 from CGMagazine and Radio Times, 9.5/10 from DualShockers, 9/10 from GamesRadar+ and Gamer Social Club, 8.5/10 from PlayStation Universe, 8/10 from The Guardian and 7/10 from Checkpoint Gaming. Pure Xbox also reported an OpenCritic rating of 87 with 93% recommended and a PS5 Metacritic score of 91 at publication. These are dated figures reported by the roundup, not a verified live snapshot of either aggregator, and may change as more reviews appear. Read the Pure Xbox roundup.

The praise focuses on the game’s atmosphere, art direction, carefully made locations and the way its detective mystery is combined with metroidvania navigation. The Guardian’s Keith Stuart describes it as “a game to sit back and wallow in,” highlighting its film-noir style and environmental detail. Pure Xbox quotes CGMagazine calling it “a masterpiece,” citing its animation, mystery and encouragement to explore. That quotation is CGMagazine’s assessment as reproduced by Pure Xbox.

What are the main reservations?

The positive coverage is not unanimous about how well the different systems fit together. DualShockers says combat takes time to get used to and investigation can punish distracted players; PlayStation Universe finds that the horror may not weigh heavily; and Checkpoint Gaming says the genre blend did not fully work for that reviewer. These are individual published reactions, not a single consensus about every part of the game.

Stuart’s Guardian review also flags puzzles that can be obtuse and tense combat. It says players more interested in the story can lower the difficulty. That option may help with combat pressure, but it does not remove the game’s emphasis on exploration and puzzle-solving. Read The Guardian’s review.

Who is likely to enjoy Silver Pines?

The early reviews suggest it is a stronger fit for players drawn to slow-burn mystery and atmosphere than for those seeking a straightforward action game. Before choosing it, consider whether you enjoy:

  • Exploring interconnected areas and revisiting routes as new tools open them.
  • Working through clues and puzzles, including some that may be obtuse.
  • Managing scarce resources and adapting to tense combat.
  • Noir-inflected horror, unsettling settings and a detective-led story.

The spread of reviews also matters: critics broadly praise the atmosphere, but they differ on the combat, horror intensity and success of the genre mix. If those mechanics are the main attraction for you, the early scores alone may not settle whether the game is a good fit.

When does Silver Pines release, and where can you play it?

At the October 7, 2026 research cut-off, the game was scheduled to launch the following day. Steam lists the PC release for October 8, 2026, and the PlayStation Store lists the PS5 release for October 8 at 04:00 UTC. Those are the platforms confirmed by the official store listings reviewed here; The Guardian’s review header also lists Switch 2, but that listing alone does not establish an official store release date for the platform.

Steam lists a demo, achievements, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. Its minimum PC requirements are Windows 10, 8 GB of RAM and 5 GB of available storage. The PS5 store describes the game as single-player for one player and lists blood, strong language and violence. Store availability, timing and features can vary by region or change after launch.

Is Silver Pines already one of 2026’s best games?

It is reasonable to call Silver Pines one of the year’s most promising releases based on the October 2026 critic snapshot: the reported scores are high, and several reviews single out its distinctive atmosphere and mystery. But “one of 2026’s best” remains a judgment, not an established year-end ranking. Scores vary, the review sample is still developing, and Steam showed “No user reviews” in the captured listing. Critic enthusiasm therefore does not yet establish player consensus. Check the Steam listing for its current store status and reviews.
