Silicon spin qubits and superconducting qubits make different engineering trade-offs rather than offering a settled winner. Silicon stores information in electron or hole spins confined in semiconductor quantum dots or donor structures. Superconducting systems, most commonly transmons, store information in microwave-frequency circuits containing Josephson junctions.
Silicon is attractive for long-lived quantum states, very small devices, and possible use of semiconductor-fabrication infrastructure. Superconducting hardware offers faster gates, mature microwave controls, and extensive processor experience. The better platform depends on whether a system prioritizes coherence and density or fast operation and control maturity—and ultimately on how many reliable logical qubits it can deliver per unit of cooling, wiring, calibration, and fabrication effort.

What is the difference between silicon spin qubits and superconducting qubits?
The word “qubit” describes the information unit, not a single hardware design. Silicon and superconducting machines implement that unit with different physical systems, so they encounter different noise sources, control requirements, fabrication constraints, and scaling bottlenecks.
Silicon spin qubits
A silicon spin qubit uses the spin state of an electron or hole. The carrier is confined in a semiconductor quantum dot or associated with a donor structure. Quantum gates manipulate the spin directly or use the spin-dependent exchange interaction between neighboring carriers. Charge sensors or related structures perform readout.

The information is held by a microscopic degree of freedom inside a semiconductor device. That gives silicon a potentially very small footprint and connects the technology to decades of research into transistors, lithography, materials processing, and wafer-scale manufacturing. It does not mean that a quantum processor can simply be produced on a conventional logic line: quantum-dot uniformity, valley physics, cryogenic operation, control wiring, and high-yield integration still have to be solved.
Superconducting qubits
A superconducting qubit is an electrical circuit operated at microwave frequencies. A Josephson junction supplies the nonlinearity that separates the lowest energy states so they can represent |0⟩ and |1⟩. Transmons are the dominant example because they reduce sensitivity to some charge fluctuations while remaining controllable with microwave pulses.
Microwave tones drive single-qubit rotations, while couplers or direct interactions provide two-qubit gates. Readout usually maps the qubit state onto a resonator response. The architecture is physically larger than a semiconductor spin device, but the control model, calibration methods, and programmable processors are comparatively mature.

Why silicon qubits generally have longer coherence
Coherence describes how long a quantum state retains a usable phase relationship. Relaxation time, written T1, measures energy decay. Dephasing measures loss of phase information; T2* is an unrefocused value, while a Hahn-echo T2 removes some slowly varying noise with a refocusing pulse.
Spin states in carefully engineered silicon can be relatively isolated from environmental disturbances. Isotopic engineering can reduce magnetic noise from unwanted nuclear spins, and the physical carrier is not itself a large electromagnetic circuit. Those properties help silicon devices preserve quantum information for much longer than the typical lifetime of a superconducting transmon.
The advantage is not absolute. Silicon spin qubits remain sensitive to electric-field fluctuations because electric fields control the confinement and exchange interaction. Charge noise can therefore become spin noise. Valley splitting—the energy separation between silicon conduction-band valleys—depends on interfaces and confinement, and an unfavorable or variable splitting can complicate initialization and gates. Fabrication differences can also change the behavior of nominally identical dots.

Reported silicon coherence and control results
A 2025 Nature report on four foundry-fabricated silicon devices measured more than 99% single- and two-qubit control fidelities in all four devices. The same report measured state-preparation and measurement fidelity of up to 99.9%. Its longest reported spin-relaxation time was T1 = 9.5 seconds. In those devices, the reported inhomogeneous coherence time was T2* = 40.6 microseconds, and a Hahn-echo measurement gave T2 = 1.9 milliseconds.

Those figures describe particular devices and protocols, not a guaranteed value for every silicon qubit. A long T1 is useful only if gates, measurement, coupling, and error correction can exploit it. The much shorter T2* also shows why calibration and noise-management methods matter even when energy relaxation is exceptionally slow.
Why superconducting qubits operate faster
Superconducting circuits interact strongly with engineered microwave fields. That coupling enables rapid rotations and fast entangling operations, at the cost of exposing the circuit to more electromagnetic and materials-related loss channels.
The 2020 Science hardware review cited typical fixed-frequency-transmon gate times of a few hundred nanoseconds. Tunable devices can reach tens of nanoseconds, although tuning increases sensitivity to flux noise. The same review described typical transmon T1 values of about 100 microseconds. In other words, superconducting processors usually perform many more operations during a coherence window than a slower platform can, even though the window itself is shorter.
Speed is not the same as useful computational throughput. A fast gate that requires frequent recalibration, suffers crosstalk, or produces correlated errors may be less valuable than a slower gate with stable behavior. The relevant comparison is the error rate and completed algorithmic work after accounting for calibration, readout, routing, and error correction.

The silicon and superconducting numbers come from different generations of devices, temperatures, calibration procedures, and measurement protocols. They should be read as evidence that each platform can achieve high fidelity under selected conditions, not as a universal leaderboard.
Which platform scales better?
“Scales better” can mean at least four different things: fitting more qubits on a chip, fabricating more uniform devices, controlling a larger system, or producing more logical qubits after error correction. Silicon looks strongest on density and possible manufacturing leverage. Superconducting technology currently has an advantage in control maturity and demonstrated programmable processors. Neither advantage alone proves fault-tolerant scalability.
Silicon’s potential scaling route
- Small physical footprint: quantum dots and donor structures can be far smaller than microwave resonator-based circuits, creating a path to high physical-qubit density.
- Semiconductor manufacturing: silicon can use concepts from advanced lithography, wafer processing, packaging, and cryogenic electronics.
- Foundry demonstrations: the 2025 Nature results show that high-fidelity operation is possible in foundry-fabricated devices rather than only in bespoke laboratory samples.
Density does not remove the need for control lines, amplifiers, filters, routing, and readout. A densely packed array can become difficult to address without disturbing neighboring qubits. Exchange gates and charge-sensitive readout can transmit electrical noise into the spin system. Device-to-device variation, valley splitting, and interface quality can force extensive characterization and individualized tuning.
A 2025 industrial-manufacturing review in the European Physical Journal A cautions that “the belief that the use of silicon spin qubits in it of itself would be enough to channel the scaling advantages of the semiconductor industry would be naive.” The point is practical: a quantum processor needs a complete stack of repeatable qubits, interconnects, control electronics, packaging, software, and error-correction procedures. Semiconductor compatibility is an important starting condition, not a finished manufacturing strategy.
Superconducting’s scaling route
- Established control stack: microwave pulse generation, resonator readout, calibration software, and benchmarking methods have been developed through many processor generations.
- Fast operations: short gate times allow rapid circuit execution and repeated error-syndrome cycles when calibration and connectivity permit.
- Programmable processor experience: superconducting systems have supplied a large body of practical data about crosstalk, routing, calibration drift, packaging, and error mitigation.
The physical system brings substantial scaling costs. Every additional qubit can require more microwave lines, filters, attenuators, amplifiers, control channels, and refrigerator resources. Calibration becomes a many-variable problem because changing one pulse or frequency can affect neighboring qubits. Materials loss, interface defects, flux noise, quasiparticles, and chip-scale nonuniformity can lower yield or create correlated errors.
ISO describes superconducting qubits as “today’s most established platform” while emphasizing the trade-off between fast operation and increasing scaling difficulty. Established means that the engineering ecosystem is comparatively mature; it does not mean that large-scale fault tolerance has been achieved.

Noise, control, and readout trade-offs
Silicon noise mechanisms
Silicon devices are especially vulnerable to electrical fluctuations that alter tunnel barriers, confinement, or exchange coupling. Charge noise can shift operating points and produce fluctuations in a nominally spin-based gate. Valley splitting depends on atomic-scale interfaces, so two devices made with the same layout can behave differently. These effects make device characterization and adaptive calibration central parts of a silicon architecture.
Readout often converts spin information into a charge signal that a sensor can detect. That conversion enables practical measurement but introduces another charge-sensitive stage. Control electronics must deliver accurate pulses while remaining compatible with a cryogenic environment and a growing number of channels.
Superconducting noise mechanisms
Superconducting circuits lose energy through dielectric materials, interfaces, and other electromagnetic channels. Defects at surfaces or interfaces can absorb microwave energy. Flux-tunable circuits add sensitivity to magnetic-flux noise. Nonequilibrium quasiparticles can change the circuit state or shorten coherence. Microwave leakage between nearby lines produces crosstalk, and frequency crowding complicates simultaneous operation.
These problems are manageable in carefully engineered processors, but their impact can grow with system size. A device can have excellent isolated-qubit metrics while a larger processor suffers from frequency collisions, spectator errors, or calibration drift.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Temperature, fabrication, and control infrastructure
Superconducting qubits require dilution refrigeration to remain in their operating regime. The refrigerator is not merely a laboratory accessory: cooling power, cable count, thermalization, filtering, and amplification all influence how many channels a system can support.
Silicon spin qubits also operate as cryogenic quantum devices, and their proposed manufacturing advantage does not eliminate that infrastructure. Dense arrays still need low-noise control, high-bandwidth readout, and electronics that can function close to the qubits or multiplex many signals. Integrating cryogenic control electronics without adding heat or electrical noise is one of the central engineering challenges.
Best Value
Fabrication compatibility should therefore be evaluated at the process level. Questions include whether devices can be made uniformly across a wafer, whether variation can be measured and corrected, whether packaging preserves performance, and whether the required control hardware can be manufactured and connected at the same scale. A process that produces many small qubits but requires extensive manual tuning may not deliver a scalable computer.
Are superconducting qubits faster than silicon qubits?
Generally, yes. The cited 2020 superconducting hardware review gives fixed-frequency-transmon gate times of a few hundred nanoseconds and tunable-device times of tens of nanoseconds. Silicon spin gates are typically operated with a stronger emphasis on preserving coherence and controlling exchange or charge-sensitive interactions, so superconducting hardware generally completes elementary operations more quickly.
That answer needs two qualifications. First, the exact speed depends on the silicon device, gate type, pulse design, and error target; no single silicon gate-time value is established by the evidence here. Second, faster physical gates do not automatically produce faster useful algorithms. Readout latency, two-qubit error, connectivity, reset, calibration, compiler overhead, and error-correction cycles can dominate total runtime.
Strengths and limitations at a glance
| Platform | Strengths | Limitations | Best-aligned priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silicon spin | Long relaxation and coherence times; very small devices; potential semiconductor-processing compatibility; foundry-fabricated demonstrations | Charge-sensitive exchange and readout; valley and interface variability; dense wiring and cryogenic electronics; no automatic path from CMOS compatibility to fault tolerance | Coherence, density, and a long-term manufacturing route |
| Superconducting | Fast gates; mature microwave engineering; programmable processors; extensive benchmarking; high demonstrated fidelities | Dilution-refrigerator dependence; shorter coherence; dielectric and interface loss; flux noise and quasiparticles; wiring, calibration, crosstalk, and uniformity challenges | Fast operation, mature controls, and near-term processor development |
How to evaluate a platform for a real workload
A hardware choice should start with the workload and error-correction plan rather than a favorite physical qubit.
- Define the required logical workload. Estimate circuit depth, connectivity, measurement frequency, and the number of logical qubits. A platform with more physical qubits may still deliver less useful computation if its error-correction overhead is higher.
- Separate physical metrics. Record single-qubit fidelity, two-qubit fidelity, preparation and measurement fidelity, T1, T2*, echo coherence, gate time, readout time, and reset time separately. Do not replace these with one headline score.
- Check protocol context. Ask which device generation, temperature, calibration duration, randomized-benchmarking method, and operating point produced each number. Values from different protocols are not directly interchangeable.
- Model control overhead. Count microwave or electrical channels, multiplexing requirements, calibration cycles, frequency allocation, crosstalk mitigation, and the amount of classical processing needed during operation.
- Model manufacturing yield. Include device variation, inactive or poorly performing qubits, packaging yield, and the effort required to tune each unit. A nominal qubit count is not the same as a usable qubit count.
- Estimate logical performance. Compare the expected number of reliable logical qubits, algorithmic depth, and fault-tolerance milestones after all overheads. This is more informative than comparing raw physical-qubit totals.
What the current evidence supports—and what it does not
The evidence supports a differentiated conclusion. Silicon has demonstrated long-lived spin states and more than 99% control fidelity in the cited foundry devices, making it a serious candidate for dense, semiconductor-based architectures. Superconducting systems have demonstrated very high gate and readout fidelities, much faster operations, and the most mature microwave-control ecosystem, making them the leading established platform for building and programming processors today.
The evidence does not establish a universal winner, a definitive maximum processor size, or a guaranteed manufacturing advantage for either platform. Silicon still has to demonstrate that device uniformity, cryogenic control, readout, and interconnects can be integrated into a fault-tolerant system. Superconducting systems still have to overcome refrigerator, wiring, materials, calibration, and uniformity limits as they grow.
A 2026 IEEE review compares platforms using qubit count, gate and readout fidelity, coherence, operation speed, Quantum Volume, Algorithmic Qubits, and fault-tolerance milestones. That broader set of measures reflects the central lesson: no single metric captures useful quantum-computing capacity.

Choose silicon spin qubits when long coherence, compact devices, and a potential semiconductor-manufacturing path are the main objectives—and when you can support the demanding work of controlling charge-sensitive, variable devices at cryogenic temperatures. Choose superconducting qubits when fast gates, mature microwave controls, and practical processor experience are more important, while accepting shorter coherence and substantial refrigeration, wiring, materials, and calibration burdens.
For the field as a whole, the decisive contest is not silicon versus superconducting on a single benchmark. It is which complete architecture can produce the most reliable logical qubits per unit of control hardware, cooling capacity, wiring, fabrication effort, and operational complexity.
