Silent Hill: Townfall Review: Tense First-Person Horror, with Stealth at Its Core

SILENT HILL: Townfall makes looking for danger part of the danger. Its first-person view and handheld CRTV give you clues and warnings, but neither guarantees a safe route through the fog. Stealth can make encounters unnerving and deliberate; it can also feel imprecise when the CRTV does not clearly locate enemies. The result is a compelling survival-horror design, though the available reviews do not support calling it an unquestioned “masterclass.”

What is Silent Hill: Townfall?

Released on September 24, 2026, SILENT HILL: Townfall is a full-length Silent Hill game presented entirely in first person. Scottish studio Screen Burn Interactive developed it, with Annapurna Interactive and Konami as co-publishers. Konami lists PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic Games Store as its platforms.

You play Simon Ordell, who arrives in St. Amelia, a fictional island town off Scotland, called back to “put things right.” The story unfolds through fractured clues and connections to the town’s former residents. Rather than treating its foggy streets and shorelines as a route from one fight to another, the game makes exploring them—and working out what happened there—a central part of the experience.

What does the CRTV do?

The CRTV is a handheld pocket television that takes the place of the series’ familiar radio. It tunes into unstable analog signals to detect nearby threats, reveal clues, and help solve puzzles. Because it is useful for both navigation and survival, checking it is part of how you move through the environment, not just an occasional menu-like pause.

SILENT HILL: townfall | DAY ONE EDITION - PlayStation 5
  • Experienced entirely in first person, explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged.
  • SILENT HILL: Townfall is a full-length, self-contained psychological horror set against the cold, isolated backdrop of Scotland, 1996

That combination is the game’s most distinctive idea: information is something you actively seek while deciding how exposed you can afford to be. Screen Burn writer and director Jon McKellan told PlayStation in a July 30, 2026 interview, “Honestly, the CRTV couldn’t work from any other perspective.” The first-person viewpoint makes the device feel integrated into the action, but also narrows what you can see without it.

Is Townfall mostly stealth?

Stealth is a major pillar, but the official design is not “never fight.” PlayStation’s product description frames the choice as avoiding danger where possible and confronting it when necessary. In a roughly four-hour pre-release hands-on preview, a PlayStation writer described using bottles and bricks to distract enemies, and radios or TVs to draw them away before slipping past.

  • Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
  • Returning to an island town to ‘put things right’, Simon Ordell descends into a world of tense evasion, explosive confrontations, and mind-bending puzzles that slowly surface the truth of St. Amelia
  • Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to ‘put things right’, encountering a town lying quiet beneath a heavy fog, seemingly abandoned but not at rest
  • Venturing deeper, and driven to understand his connection to the place and its inhabitants, Simon begins to discover fragments of a past rising to the surface
  • Experienced entirely in first person, Simon must explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including the CRTV, a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged

That gives encounters a useful rhythm: scan, interpret what you can, then choose whether to hide, make a distraction, or engage. Tom’s Guide’s post-release reviewer also describes stealth as a key part of play, comparing the repeated enemy-scanning rhythm to Alien: Isolation. El País’ October 5, 2026 opinion review emphasizes vulnerability and reads the design as favoring flight over combat. Those are individual critical interpretations rather than evidence of a universal player experience.

Can you fight the monsters, or do you have to hide?

You can fight when needed; hiding and evasion are not the only options. But the game’s framing and the observed distraction tools make avoiding danger a meaningful alternative to treating every enemy as a combat encounter. The available sources do not establish that combat is impossible or that every encounter has one required solution.

Silent Hill Townfall - Day One Edition - PS5
  • Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
  • When Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to "put things in order", he meets a city lying quietly in dense fog, seemingly abandoned, yet anything but dormant
  • After venturing further to understand his connection to this place and its inhabitants, he gradually discovers fragments of the past rising to the surface
  • Simon must explore, evade and survive from a first-person perspective. It uses a limited arsenal of weapons and tools, including the CRTV: a portable TV to receive unstable signals
  • The dodging is tension, the battles are hectic and the story-based puzzles reveal a truth that does not want to remain hidden

Where stealth works—and where it can frustrate

The first-person perspective supports closeness and uncertainty, while the CRTV gives you a way to gather information before committing to a route. PC Gamer’s reviewer, writing after a roughly 13-hour PC playthrough, praised the device as a puzzle-solving and navigation tool and said they often avoided weapons on normal difficulty. The same review points to a real limitation: CRTV enemy-position information could be imprecise about distance, and one frequency could not show several enemies at once.

That trade-off matters. A tool that turns scanning into tension can also make it harder to judge whether a path is safe. PC Gamer’s reviewer also described a late-game puzzle as requiring effort. El País’ opinion review likewise foregrounds difficult puzzles. These accounts do not establish that all players will find the same sections frustrating, but they temper the idea that tension and challenge always feel perfectly readable.

How do the story, puzzles, and setting fit together?

St. Amelia is presented as remote, fog-covered, and shaped by the history of its inhabitants. Konami’s launch description emphasizes silence and fragments of memory. In a developer-authored PlayStation feature, the town is described as recently lived in and marked by its own trauma rather than simply abandoned. The setting therefore has a narrative role: exploring places and piecing together clues helps make the town’s past legible.

Puzzles are part of that storytelling, not merely interruptions between threats. Official materials describe fragmented narrative delivery through puzzles, while PC Gamer and El País both report that some puzzles can be difficult. That pairing suits a game about uncertainty, although it also means the investigative layer may test patience as well as curiosity.

The developers’ stated aim is tension and escalating uncertainty rather than relying mainly on jump scares and gore. McKellan described the intended tone in a PlayStation feature published September 16, 2026: “Generally, Silent Hill: Townfall’s style of horror is less about jump scares and gore, and more about tension and escalating uncertainty.” That is a design goal; reviewers’ responses are more varied. Tom’s Guide strongly praises the perspective, story, setting, and encounters, while PC Gamer praises the town and CRTV but reports friction with enemy-location information and a late puzzle.

Is Silent Hill: Townfall worth playing?

Townfall is most persuasive when its viewpoint, CRTV, stealth, and investigation reinforce one another: you are not only walking into danger, you are trying to learn enough to decide how to approach it. Its first-person presentation and atmospheric town have drawn strong praise from Tom’s Guide and PC Gamer, and its core stealth idea is more involved than simply hiding until a threat passes.

The reservation is that uncertainty can tip into poor readability. PC Gamer’s report of imprecise threat distance and a late difficult puzzle, alongside El País’ emphasis on demanding puzzles, shows why the game may not feel consistently fair or smooth to every player. If you want survival horror built around atmosphere, clues, and cautious decisions, the available reviews make a strong case for it. If you want clear enemy tracking or combat-forward encounters, expect a less reliable fit. This is a qualified recommendation, not a claim of consensus: the sources here are selected reviews, not an exhaustive score survey.
