The series began with Silent Hill on PlayStation in 1999. The categories matter. Konami explicitly calls Silent Hill 2 a full remake, while it describes Silent Hill f as a new story rather than a remake. The first-game remake is a separate project still in development. Townfall is an already released entry, not the same project as that first-game remake.

Choose the Silent Hill 2 remake for a modernized classic
The remake is the clearest entry point for someone who wants to see how a landmark older game has been rebuilt for current hardware. Konami says it is a full remake of the original Silent Hill 2, first released for PlayStation 2 in 2001. The publisher also identifies changes to the perspective, combat, explorable areas and cutscenes, so this is not simply the 2001 game running at a higher resolution.
It is available on PS5 and PC/Steam in the official product listing. Konami’s 2026 milestone announcement includes Xbox Series X|S among the platforms counted for the remake’s cumulative figures. Because those official references describe the platform information differently, check the current regional store page for the exact edition on the device you use.
You do not have to play the 2001 original first. The available official descriptions identify the remake and its changes but do not impose a prerequisite. Playing the original can be a separate historical choice; it is not an established requirement for understanding the remake.

Silent Hill f is for players who want a new narrative rather than a reconstruction of an earlier game. Konami describes new characters and settings and presents it as a story that newcomers and returning players can enjoy. Its setting in Japan distinguishes it from the town setting many people associate with the older games.

The listed platforms are PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Storefront names, editions and availability can differ by country, so a platform listed by the publisher does not guarantee that every edition is sold in every region. The game released in September 2025.
Choose Townfall for first-person, self-contained horror
Silent Hill: Townfall is a full-length, self-contained first-person psychological-horror entry. It is set on a Scottish island in 1996, which makes its location and viewpoint notably different from both the Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f. The first-person presentation is the deciding factor for players who want horror experienced directly through the protagonist’s viewpoint rather than the remake’s over-the-shoulder perspective.
Konami lists PS5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. The publisher also states that the physical version is for PS5. Townfall released on September 24, 2026. The available official material calls it self-contained but does not label it as the required introduction to the wider series; select it because its setting, viewpoint and standalone structure match your preference.

Choose the original only for historical context or a specific retro experience
The first Silent Hill established the series on PlayStation in 1999. It remains important for understanding the franchise’s origin, but the official information available here confirms its original release rather than a complete modern purchasing guide. Whether it can be bought or played on a particular current console depends on the regional store, compatibility policy and edition. Verify those details immediately before buying instead of assuming that an older release is available everywhere.

Do you need to play the Silent Hill games in order?
No required order has been established by the official material for these current releases. The practical reason is that the games do not form one mandatory numbered campaign: the Silent Hill 2 remake revisits a 2001 game, Silent Hill f introduces a new story and setting, and Townfall is explicitly self-contained.
- For a remake-focused route: play the Silent Hill 2 remake first. Add the original 1999 game later only if you want the franchise’s historical starting point.
- For a new-story route: begin with Silent Hill f. Its new characters and Japanese setting do not require prior completion of a numbered entry.
- For a standalone first-person route: begin with Townfall. Its self-contained structure is suited to a player who wants one complete horror story rather than a back-catalogue project.
- For release-history context: start with the 1999 original, then compare the 2001 source game and its 2024 remake if you can legally access the relevant editions in your region.
This is a reader-oriented order, not a publisher-mandated sequence. The sources do not say that one of these games must be completed before another.
Is Silent Hill 2 a remake?
Yes. Konami’s official product page states: “This game is a full remake of the original SILENT HILL 2, first released for PlayStation®2 in 2001.” The remake released on October 8, 2024.

What is known about the first Silent Hill remake?
Konami’s FY2026 corporate report confirms that a remake of the first game is in development. The report says: “We are also working on a remake of the first game in the SILENT HILL series as well as a new title, SILENT HILL: Townfall, with plans to develop this series further going forward.”
The official report located for this status does not state a release date or platforms. That means it is accurate to call the project in development, but not to promise a launch window, console list, pre-order date or compatibility information. Townfall’s release should not be mistaken for the first-game remake’s release.

The series-wide figure covers multiple products and distribution types. The remake figure combines sales, downloads and subscription access across named platforms. The Silent Hill f figure is a rapid global milestone. Different dates, products and measurement categories make a simple ranking misleading.
