Yes—the 2024 SILENT HILL 2 remake works with a controller on PC. Steam lists full controller support for Xbox controllers, DualShock controllers over USB only, and DualSense controllers, and says the developers recommend playing with a controller. The same listing gives separate minimum and recommended PC targets, but those figures are storefront targets rather than a guarantee for every computer.
This guide is specifically about the PC/Steam release of the SILENT HILL 2 remake, released on October 7, 2024. It does not describe every Silent Hill game or assume that another release has the same menus, requirements or compatibility.

- Combat difficulty can be changed later, but puzzle difficulty affects game content and cannot be changed during a playthrough.
Steam also lists 14 interface languages, full English and Japanese audio, subtitles for every language in its table, and a current compatibility label of unsupported for Steam Deck. Compatibility labels can change, so check the live store page when you are ready to play.

Controller support on PC
Which controllers are listed
Steam marks SILENT HILL 2 as having full controller support. The listing specifically names:
- Xbox controllers
- DualShock controllers, with USB connection specified
- DualSense controllers
The developers’ statement on the listing is: “The developers recommend playing this game with a controller.” That is a recommendation, not a requirement. The official material does not identify one model as best, tested or mandatory, so choose a PC game controller that your Windows system and Steam installation already recognize.
Basic setup sequence
- Confirm that your PC meets at least the minimum Windows, processor, memory, graphics and storage requirements shown below.
- Connect the controller before launching the game. For a DualShock, use USB because that is the connection identified by the Steam listing.
- Open Steam and start the game from your library. Steam should display the title’s full-controller-support status on its store and library information.
- At the title screen, use the controller to move through menus and confirm that button presses are being detected before beginning a new game.
- If there is no response, close the game, reconnect the controller, restart Steam, and launch again. Test one controller at a time so Windows and Steam are not receiving competing inputs.
These steps are general PC troubleshooting guidance. The official pages do not publish a complete control map, button-remapping list or a controller-versus-keyboard performance comparison, so do not assume a particular layout or customization option until you see it in your installed build.

Can your PC run Silent Hill 2?
Use the table as a comparison, not as an independent benchmark. Steam describes the minimum figures as a target for Low/Medium quality at 1080p and a stable 30 FPS. It describes the recommended figures as a target for Medium quality at 60 FPS or High quality at 30 FPS in Full HD. Neither statement guarantees identical performance on every system; cooling, drivers, background software and the rest of a computer’s configuration can change the result.

How to compare your computer
- Check Windows edition and architecture. The listing requires Windows 10 x64 and a 64-bit processor and operating system.
- Identify your exact CPU and GPU model rather than relying on a family name. A different model in the same product family is not automatically equivalent.
- Verify that 16 GB of RAM is available and that the installation drive has at least 50 GB free. The listing recommends an SSD for both requirement tiers.
- Place your system in the minimum or recommended column. If it falls between them, treat the published frame-rate and quality descriptions as uncertain rather than promising a particular result.
- After installation, use the graphics controls exposed by your current game build and judge stability on your own machine. Store targets are not a laboratory test.
Graphics settings: what you can responsibly expect
The official sources provide performance targets, but they do not publish a complete inventory of the game’s graphics-menu controls or explain the visual and performance cost of each option. That means a trustworthy guide cannot name a definitive “best settings” preset, claim that one switch has a measured FPS cost, or promise that every PC will expose the same controls.
A safe tuning method
- Start at the resolution appropriate to your display. The official targets are written around Full HD (1080p); the recommended listing separately mentions 4K with DLSS or similar technology.
- Choose a quality level that matches your hardware tier. A minimum-tier PC should begin by pursuing the listing’s Low/Medium, 30-FPS target. A recommended-tier PC can aim for Medium at 60 FPS or High at 30 FPS in Full HD.
- If your build offers DLSS or a similar upscaling technology and you are targeting 4K, enable it only after confirming that the option is present. The store listing mentions this technology for the 4K target but does not specify a required mode.
- Play a representative section for several minutes, including movement and combat, and watch for sustained drops rather than judging from a single menu screen.
- Change one available graphics control at a time. Record the previous value so you can undo a change that makes image quality or stability worse.
- Keep the game on an SSD when possible. Steam recommends an SSD, but the listing does not quantify a loading-time improvement.
If the game is unstable at the minimum target, lower the available quality or resolution controls and close background applications before concluding that the hardware is incapable. If a control is not visible in your version, do not substitute a setting from another Silent Hill release or from an unrelated PC guide.

Accessibility settings: what to check before starting
The official pages available for this release do not provide a complete, current inventory of accessibility options. They do not establish whether the PC build includes particular text-size controls, color filters, high-contrast modes, input remapping, camera options, motion adjustments or audio-assistance features. Those details must be verified in the current game build rather than inferred.

Use an in-game checklist
Open the settings menus before beginning a long play session and look for the controls that matter to you:
- Reading: subtitle display, language selection, text size and contrast controls, if offered.
- Input: button remapping, sensitivity controls and whether keyboard and controller assignments can be changed independently.
- Visual comfort: camera or motion options, brightness and contrast controls, and any color or flashing-light adjustments.
- Audio: separate volume controls, subtitle speaker identification or other cues, if present.
- Difficulty: the separate combat and puzzle settings described by KONAMI.
This is a checklist of items to verify, not a claim that each item exists. If an option is absent, use the platform’s available controller, display and operating-system accommodations where practical, and consult the current official support information for updates.

Combat and puzzle difficulty are different decisions
KONAMI’s support information distinguishes the two difficulty categories. Combat difficulty can be changed later in the Settings menu, so you can adjust it if encounters are too demanding or too easy.
Puzzle difficulty is different: it affects game content and cannot be changed during a playthrough. Choose it before starting if you want the appropriate level of puzzle guidance. Changing combat difficulty later does not change the puzzle setting or make puzzle changes possible.
Language and subtitles
Steam’s language table lists 14 interface languages. It shows full audio for English and Japanese, with subtitles available across the languages in the table. The table describes interface, audio and subtitle availability separately, so an interface language should not be assumed to include dubbed dialogue.

Set your preferred language in the Steam or game settings available to your installation, then confirm subtitle behavior at the opening scenes. The listing’s language table is the authoritative reference for the combinations it supports.
Steam Deck status
Steam currently labels SILENT HILL 2 as unsupported for Steam Deck compatibility. That is a store classification, not a technical finding that no individual configuration can launch the game. It also is not a promise that a workaround will provide stable controls, graphics or battery life. Recheck the live Steam listing because Valve’s compatibility status can change after updates.
Common setup problems and sensible next steps
The controller is connected but the game does not respond
- Quit the game and reconnect the controller before launching again.
- For DualShock hardware, switch to USB, matching the connection described by Steam.
- Disconnect other gamepads or input devices temporarily to eliminate conflicting signals.
- Restart Steam and test the controller in another Steam title to determine whether the problem is system-wide or specific to this game.
The PC meets minimum specs but performance is poor
- Confirm that the exact GPU and CPU models meet the listed tier; “similar” product names are not proof of equivalent performance.
- Use the game’s available resolution and quality controls to pursue the stated 30-FPS minimum target.
- Close unnecessary background programs and ensure the game is installed on an SSD, which Steam recommends.
- Do not treat the minimum specification as a guarantee. The listing describes an intended target, not a measured result for every combination of hardware and drivers.
You need an accessibility feature that is not visible
Check every settings category in the current build, verify the language and subtitle behavior, and consult KONAMI’s current support information. Do not assume that a feature exists because another game in the series or another platform includes it.
