Silent Hill 2, Bloober Team’s remake published by Konami on October 8, 2024, is the best-supported match for the headline “The Exorcist Meets Silent Hill in October’s Best New Horror Game.” It is not an adaptation of The Exorcist; the comparison describes the remake’s more concrete, cinematic approach to terror.
James Sunderland arrives in Silent Hill after receiving a letter from Mary, his wife who died three years earlier, asking him to return to their “special place.” The town transforms his grief, guilt and self-loathing into monsters, environments and encounters built around his private history.

Why Silent Hill 2 fits the headline
Slant reviewer Justin Clark describes the original game’s abstract horror as closer to Eraserhead and Skinamarink, while calling the remake more akin to The Exorcist and Hellraiser. That is a tonal comparison, not a licensing connection or claim that the game retells either film.
The distinction matters. The remake still treats Silent Hill as a supernatural expression of personal trauma, but it presents that horror with clearer performances, more immediate staging and a more legible physical world. Clark called the result “reborn by a series of smart, subtle, and elegant choices.”

What happens in Silent Hill 2
A letter from the dead
James’s journey begins with an impossible message from Mary. Her illness and death are central to the story, but the game gradually reveals that Silent Hill is not simply haunted: it responds to what its visitors carry inside them.
A town that externalizes trauma
The remake uses guilt, abuse, social exclusion and self-loathing as sources of horror. Different characters encounter versions of the town shaped by their own histories, so the setting functions less like a generic haunted location and more like a machine that gives private pain a physical form.
This is why the game’s most frightening moments are not limited to attacks. Rooms, corridors, puzzles and conversations all become evidence of what James is refusing to confront.
What the remake changes
Over-the-shoulder exploration
The remake replaces the original’s more distant camera with an over-the-shoulder view. Movement and aiming are more fluid, making navigation and combat easier to read for players accustomed to modern third-person games.
Expanded locations and new secrets
Every original location remains, but previously inaccessible spaces are opened and filled with additional secrets. Exploration therefore has more opportunities for discovery than a straight visual upgrade would provide.
More active enemies and larger boss encounters
Enemies are placed more assertively in James’s path, and bosses receive larger arenas or additional phases. The design creates more direct confrontation while keeping James deliberately vulnerable rather than turning him into an action hero.

The cost of modernization
Higher-fidelity visuals, smoother controls and more believable performances improve accessibility, but they also reduce some of the original’s stiffness, dream logic and passive torment. The remake is easier to approach as a contemporary game; it is not identical in texture to the PlayStation 2 experience.

How the horror works mechanically
Silent Hill 2 retains the survival-horror structure of exploration, puzzle solving, weapons, resource pressure and boss fights. Combat exists to make movement through the town dangerous, not to provide a power fantasy. Limited confidence in James’s ability to survive keeps even familiar routes tense.
Puzzles slow the story down and force attention onto the environment. Their function is not merely to block progress: they make the player study a place that may already be communicating something about the characters.

Silent Hill 2 versus Slitterhead
For readers drawn specifically to the possession side of the headline, Slitterhead is the clearest alternative. TheXboxHub describes it as a game built around classic Exorcist-style possession and calls its possession mechanic “the most innovative and enjoyable aspect.” It was released on November 8, 2024 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
| Category | Silent Hill 2 | Slitterhead |
|---|---|---|
| Primary emphasis | Psychological survival horror focused on guilt and trauma | Possession-driven combat and body swapping |
| Core mechanic | Exploration, puzzles, weapons and resource management | Possessing civilians, animals and special “Rarities” for traversal and combat |
| Horror presentation | Personalized, oppressive and increasingly cinematic | More overtly supernatural and action-oriented |
| Release date | October 8, 2024 | November 8, 2024 |
| Formats identified by the cited coverage | PC review coverage; a PS5 edition is marketed at retail | Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC |
The choice is straightforward: choose Silent Hill 2 if the appeal is a carefully staged story about grief, guilt and self-destruction. Choose Slitterhead if switching bodies and using possession as a traversal and combat system matters more than slow-burn psychological ambiguity.

Who should play it
- Players who want psychological survival horror rather than constant action.
- Readers interested in stories where monsters and environments reflect character trauma.
- Fans of the original who can accept a more legible, cinematic presentation.
- Newcomers who want a modern control scheme without losing exploration, puzzles and resource pressure.
It is a weaker fit for anyone seeking experimental possession mechanics as the main attraction. Silent Hill 2’s supernatural elements serve its character drama; they are not a system for freely taking over bodies.

What critics say about its significance
The remake’s strongest achievement is not simply visual fidelity. It makes a landmark horror game readable to a current audience while preserving its central idea: fear can be a manifestation of what a person knows, denies or cannot forgive.
The Guardian’s Keith Stuart called it “that rarest of things: a horror game that actually has something to say.” That assessment explains why the title has endured beyond its scares. Its enemies and fog are memorable, but the lasting subject is responsibility—who bears it, how people evade it and what happens when evasion becomes a world.
Release and buying context

Retail searches commonly identify the product as “Silent Hill 2 remake PS5,” but edition, stock, country and price vary, so buyers should verify those details at the point of purchase.
