It combines those jobs in one chassis, but it is not an all-in-one player: the published specifications list no built-in DAC or analog outputs, and Roon control requires another device. Silent Angel’s figures describe the product; they do not establish measured or audible superiority over a computer or NAS.
What the Rhein ZX does
Silent Angel positions the Rhein ZX as a digital music hub. It runs Roon Server, can hold a local music library, and sends digital audio to a DAC or another compatible digital destination. Its listed network playback and streaming options extend beyond Roon, although availability may depend on platform and region.

Roon Server manages a library, performs background analysis, and streams audio. It is headless software, meaning it has no user-facing control interface of its own. You control it from a separate device running Roon or Roon Remote; Roon says a free account is required to get started. See Roon’s explanation of its software packages.
Services and playback options
Silent Angel lists Roon Server, DLNA Renderer, HQPlayer NAA, ReadyMedia, AirPlay 2, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Amazon Music HD, and built-in TIDAL, Qobuz, and QQ Music. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every service or app is available in every country or remains unchanged over time.

Note that not all services offer 24-bit/192 kHz content; Amazon Music Ultra HD, Qobuz(Works with Qobuz through WiiM Home app. Currently does not support Qobuz connect.), and personal libraries support it. Effortlessly form groups with other AirPlay 2 or Alexa devices like Echo and HomePod, or connect multiple WiiM devices for synchronized playback across various audio devices simultaneously.
Does the Rhein ZX include a DAC?
No DAC or analog output is listed. The Rhein ZX sends a digital signal to an external DAC or another digital audio destination, so it is intended for a system that already has—or will add—such a component. Its HDMI-shaped I2S socket is a digital-audio output, not ordinary HDMI video/audio; Silent Angel lists HDMI video separately. The complete output specifications are on the Rhein ZX product page.
Digital outputs and format ceilings
| Output | Manufacturer-listed maximum |
|---|---|
| USB audio and I2S | PCM up to 768kHz/32-bit; DSD512 |
| Coaxial, optical, and AES/EBU | PCM up to 192kHz/24-bit; DoP DSD64 |
These are output-format ceilings stated by Silent Angel, not a claim that every connected DAC supports those rates or that music will sound better at the maximum. Confirm compatibility with the DAC and connection you plan to use.

How it compares with a computer or NAS running Roon
The ZX’s processor and memory options are substantial on paper, but specifications alone do not show how it performs with a particular library or DSP workload. Roon recommends an Intel Core i3 Ivy Bridge or newer, 4GB of RAM, and an SSD boot drive; it also says the experience depends on library size and hardware. The ZX exceeds those listed baseline figures on paper, but that comparison is not a benchmark or evidence of audible improvement. Roon’s current guidance is available on its hardware recommendations page.
Roon lists Windows, macOS, Linux x86_64, and several NAS platforms among supported server and remote routes. If you already own a suitable computer or NAS, compare the ZX with that system rather than assuming a dedicated appliance is necessary. The practical differences to weigh are whether a device runs Roon Server or only acts as an endpoint, its storage and expansion, digital-output compatibility, need for a separate control device, installation and noise considerations, and total system cost.

Price and buying context
eCoustics reported a US launch on September 28, 2026, at a US$9,499 MSRP, with pre-orders through authorized North American audio dealers. This is secondary launch reporting, not confirmation of today’s price or availability. Check the current configuration, regional price, and stock with a dealer or Silent Angel before making a decision; no non-US price is established here. Silent Angel provides a dealer locator.
At that reported price, the ZX makes the most sense to evaluate as a high-end consolidation choice: it brings Roon Server, storage, and digital transport together, but still requires a control device and an external DAC. A computer or NAS you already own may cover the server role, so compare the complete cost of each setup rather than the server alone.
