Confusion, seizures, collapse, or loss of consciousness may signal heat stroke: call your local emergency number and start cooling immediately. Heat exhaustion more often causes heavy sweating, thirst, headache, nausea, weakness, or cramps. In pregnancy, fainting or contractions need prompt medical attention; in newborns, watch for behavior changes and dehydration signs such as fewer wet diapers or a dry mouth.
How to tell heat exhaustion from heat stroke
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are not equally urgent. Mental status is a key distinction: heat exhaustion generally does not cause altered awareness, while confusion or inability to respond normally is an emergency warning sign. Do not wait for a particular temperature or skin appearance if someone is confused, having a seizure, collapsing, or unconscious.

| Condition | Common signs | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Heat exhaustion | Heavy sweating, thirst, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness or tiredness, muscle cramps, dizziness, and cool, pale, clammy, or damp skin. Irritability and an elevated temperature may also occur. | Move to a cool place, cool the skin, and offer fluids only if the person is alert and can swallow. Seek urgent advice if symptoms are difficult to treat or do not improve. |
| Possible heat stroke | Confusion, delirium, slurred speech, extreme lethargy, seizure, collapse, or loss of consciousness. Very high temperature, rapid heartbeat or breathing, and hot skin may occur. | Call the local emergency number, move the person somewhere cooler, and begin cooling while help is on the way. |
Skin can be hot and dry or hot and damp in heat stroke; sweating may or may not be present. Dry skin is not required for heat stroke, and sweating does not rule it out. These symptom patterns are described by the NHS and UNICEF’s technical note.

Pregnancy can make heat-related illness develop sooner: the body has to work harder to cool both the pregnant person and the developing baby, and dehydration risk also increases. The CDC’s pregnancy guidance advises immediate medical care if heat-illness symptoms occur.

Possible symptoms include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, lightheadedness, headache, nausea, vomiting, and a rise in body temperature. Fainting, rapid breathing or heartbeat, severe cramping, and contractions warrant prompt professional assessment; do not dismiss them as ordinary pregnancy discomfort. CDC clinical guidance notes that heat exposure in any trimester has been associated with outcomes including preterm birth, stillbirth, and low birthweight, and that first-trimester exposure may increase the risk of certain birth defects. These are associations and possible increased risks, not predictions about an individual pregnancy. See the CDC clinical overview.
UNICEF’s 2023 technical note lists a core-temperature increase under 39°C/102°F as a pregnancy heat-exhaustion guide and above 39°C/102°F as a very high temperature associated with heat stroke. The note says evidence for the lower pregnancy threshold is still developing. These figures are not a home triage rule: do not wait for a thermometer reading before seeking care for concerning symptoms.

- KNOW THE FEVER THRESHOLD: A rectal reading of 100.4°F or higher counts as a fever. The Quick-Read digital rectal thermometer gives you that number at home, so you know whether to call the pediatrician.
- QUICK FIRST READ: A quick read appears at around ten seconds, while the final reading lands at thirty. Wait for the second reading before writing anything down or calling anyone—the early number is still settling.
- PLACEMENT DECIDES THE READING: Insert only as far as the manual directs, hold the thermometer steady and keep your baby still until it finishes. A probe that shifts partway through is why two readings disagree.
- RECTAL ONLY, & CLEAN EVERY TIME: Wipe the probe with rubbing alcohol or soap and water before and after each use and let it dry. A thermometer used rectally is never afterwards used in anybody's mouth, whatever the rush.
- MADE FOR THE 2AM DECISION: Fridababy makes practical, parent-first solutions for the parts of parenting nobody prepares you for. Includes one Quick-Read digital rectal thermometer; battery details are in the manual.
Signs of heat illness and dehydration in a newborn
Newborns cannot tell you they feel thirsty, dizzy, or headachy, so look for visible changes. UNICEF guidance for infants and children under four includes unusual irritability and dehydration signs such as:
Recommended Free Tools
- Fewer wet diapers than usual or dark urine.
- A dry or sticky mouth, or no tears when crying.
- Sunken eyes or a sunken soft spot (fontanelle).
- Unusual irritability or behavior that is not normal for the baby.
Poor responsiveness, very high temperature, rapid breathing, or serious dehydration are severe warning signs requiring immediate facility care. The available guidance groups infants with children under four; it does not establish a separately validated symptom threshold for newborns. If a newborn seems unwell during heat exposure, seek prompt professional medical advice. CDC also advises immediate medical care for a child with heat-related illness symptoms.

What to do while getting help
- For suspected heat stroke, call your local emergency number now. Confusion, seizure, collapse, loss of consciousness, or abnormal responsiveness are emergency signs; do not drive yourself to emergency care for heat stroke.
- Move the person to a cooler place. Remove unnecessary clothing and cool the skin with cool water, wet cloths or sheets, sponging, and fanning.
- Do not give drinks to someone who is confused or unconscious. A person with suspected heat stroke should not be given anything to drink.
- For heat exhaustion without emergency signs, cool the person and offer fluids only if they are alert and able to swallow. NHS guidance says symptoms should begin improving within 30 minutes of cooling; seek urgent advice if they are difficult to treat or persist. That timeframe applies to heat exhaustion, not suspected heat stroke.
- For pregnancy or an infant, get medical advice promptly. CDC advises immediate care for heat-related illness symptoms during pregnancy and in children; seek emergency services for severe signs.
Reducing heat risk during pregnancy and infancy
- During pregnancy, work with a clinician on a heat action plan. CDC recommends avoiding very strenuous activity, resting, and asking a clinician how to replace salts and minerals lost through heavy sweating. Check local HeatRisk and air quality information.
- Do not rely on a fan as sufficient cooling in extreme indoor heat: CDC says a fan can increase body temperature when indoor temperatures are above 90°F. Move to a cooler or air-conditioned location where possible.
- For infants under six months, UNICEF advises exclusive breastfeeding in hot weather; breastfeeding mothers should drink plenty of water. Do not add plain water for a newborn based on generic heat advice.
- Never leave an infant or child unattended in a parked car. Children left in parked cars are at greatest risk for heat stroke and possible death, according to the CDC.
- Do not give an infant medication for overheating without consulting a health provider.
A thermometer can help check a baby’s temperature, but a reading does not diagnose heat illness or rule it out. Do not delay care for danger signs in order to take a measurement.
