What bad RAM can look like
Memory problems can be associated with crashes, freezes, unexpected restarts, and stop-code errors. These symptoms are useful clues when they recur, especially if they began after a hardware or settings change, but they are not specific to RAM. Drivers, the processor, the motherboard, storage, power problems, and other software can produce similar failures. Replacing memory based on one crash or one error message risks treating the wrong cause.

A blue screen is a serious system error, not a diagnosis. Microsoft’s stop-code guidance includes memory diagnostics among the possible troubleshooting steps for memory-related errors, but its general guidance also reflects that stop errors can have different causes. A stop code should help direct the investigation, not close it.
What a stop code can—and cannot—tell you
For example, Microsoft describes IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL as typically occurring when a driver or system memory accesses invalid memory. The reference to system memory does not establish that a RAM module has failed: a driver can be involved, and the code alone does not identify the faulty component.

Likewise, a slow or sluggish computer by itself is not enough to conclude that RAM is bad. Slowness can result from many software or hardware conditions, while a memory fault may instead appear as an apparently unrelated application crash. The evidence is more useful when symptoms repeat and you can connect them to a pattern, such as a change in hardware or memory settings. Even then, testing is needed before deciding what to replace.
Record the pattern before testing
Make a short record of the problem before changing settings or removing hardware. Details can help distinguish a recurring fault from an isolated crash and give a repair technician or system maker something concrete to investigate.
- Note whether the problem is recurring and what happens: a freeze, restart, blue screen, application closure, or another failure.
- Write down any displayed stop code exactly as shown, including punctuation or underscores.
- Record whether the symptoms began after installing hardware, moving a computer, updating software, or changing memory settings.
- Note what the computer was doing when the failure occurred and whether the same activity triggers it again.
- Record which test you ran, the result, and whether the system was using its normal memory settings.
- Keep track of the date and the module or slot tested if you later perform isolation tests.
A single incident is not conclusive. A repeatable pattern is a reason to investigate, but it still does not identify RAM as the cause. Keeping this record also prevents a change made during troubleshooting from being mistaken for the original problem.

Choose a memory test
Windows Memory Diagnostic is a convenient first check on a Windows computer. A bootable MemTest86 test is another option: it starts from a USB flash drive and tests memory outside the normal Windows session. Neither route, by itself, proves which component caused a broader system error.
| Test path | What it does | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Memory Diagnostic | A built-in Windows test. The computer restarts to run it, then displays a result notification after sign-in. | Convenient for a first check; the result does not by itself identify the cause of a system problem or a particular faulty component. |
| MemTest86 | PassMark’s utility boots from a USB flash drive and tests RAM with a series of algorithms and patterns. | Runs outside the normal Windows session, but requires bootable media and careful interpretation. Preparing the USB can erase its existing contents. |
Compare these paths by convenience, whether the test runs inside or outside the normal operating-system session, and how much interpretation the result requires. The built-in check is usually the least disruptive starting point. A bootable test is useful as a second check or when you want to test memory without loading Windows, but it still examines the memory system rather than certifying one specific DIMM.
These are different ways to check memory, not competing ways to produce an automatic diagnosis. If a test reports errors, investigate the configuration and the rest of the memory system before deciding that a module is defective.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
- Open Windows Memory Diagnostic and choose the option to restart the computer and check for problems. Save any open work first: the test requires a restart.
- Allow the computer to restart and complete the test. Microsoft says Windows restarts automatically after the tests.
- After signing in again, look for the result notification. Give the test time to finish rather than interrupting the reboot.
- If you missed the notification, open Event Viewer and go to
Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > MemoryDiagnostics-Results > Debugto find the result. - Record what the result says and whether you had changed any memory settings. Do not treat a reported error as proof that a specific DIMM is defective.
The documented outcome is a test result, not a component-by-component repair plan. If the result is negative but crashes continue, the remaining symptoms still need troubleshooting; if errors are reported, the next question is whether they persist under stable default memory settings.
Run the check when you can leave the computer unattended for the restart and test. If the machine cannot stay on long enough to launch the diagnostic, or if it repeatedly restarts before a result appears, record that behavior and move to a bootable test or professional support rather than repeatedly forcing normal Windows sessions.

When to use a bootable test
Consider MemTest86 if you want another check that runs outside the normal Windows session. PassMark describes it as booting from USB and testing RAM with multiple algorithms and patterns. That separation can be useful when investigating problems that occur during normal Windows use, but it does not make every reported error a confirmed RAM failure.
- Choose a USB flash drive for the test media and protect any files on it first. PassMark warns that preparing the bootable drive can erase its existing contents. Copy anything important elsewhere before creating the media.
- Create the bootable media using the utility’s instructions, then start the computer from that USB drive. The exact boot-menu key and firmware wording vary by computer.
- Let the memory test run and note whether it reports errors. Record the test configuration and any settings shown on screen.
- Interpret errors alongside the computer’s memory settings and any other hardware or slot tests; do not assume an error points to one particular stick.
The specific steps for creating media and selecting a USB boot device can depend on the computer and utility version. Follow the instructions for your system rather than assuming every machine uses the same boot menu or firmware labels.
A dedicated USB drive is useful for this task, but it is not a diagnostic result in itself. The important distinction is that the test runs independently of the ordinary Windows session; independence can narrow possibilities, not automatically name the failed part.

If a test reports errors
Take the result seriously: it is a reason to investigate the memory system. It does not, by itself, establish that a RAM module is physically defective. PassMark cautions that not all errors reported by a memory test are due to bad memory; CPU or motherboard issues and unreliable operation at high memory speeds can also matter.
First consider whether the computer is using an aggressive high-speed memory configuration. Return memory settings to defaults or more conservative settings according to the system or motherboard maker’s instructions, then repeat the test. If errors stop, that supports a stability or configuration problem. It does not prove the modules will be reliable under every setting or that they are permanently fault-free.
Do not infer that the numerical address of an error identifies the stick in that position. The same address can be affected by a slot, a memory channel, the processor’s memory controller, or the board. Repeated, controlled tests are more informative than a single line in a test report.
If errors appear only at high speed
PassMark notes that memory can work in another system—or be judged good by a vendor—yet fail to operate reliably at high speed in a particular configuration. More conservative motherboard timings may correct that behavior. In practical terms, distinguish “the current memory setup is unstable” from “this DIMM is defective.” They are not equivalent conclusions.

If lowering the setting removes errors, document the original setting and the stable setting. A system that is reliable only at a conservative configuration may still need the maker’s support, especially if the advertised profile was expected to work on that specific platform. Do not restore an aggressive profile simply to reproduce a failure if doing so makes the computer unstable.

If no errors appear
A test that reports no errors is reassuring, but it cannot guarantee that an intermittent problem is absent. A fault may not occur during the particular run, workload, temperature, or setting used. If crashes or stop errors continue, do not assume RAM has been definitively cleared and do not buy replacement memory just to see whether it helps. Continue with broader Windows stop-code and hardware troubleshooting.
Conversely, do not keep replacing parts solely because a clean test did not explain a crash. Compare the timing of future failures with drivers, updates, hardware changes, and the stop codes you recorded. Memory testing is one branch of troubleshooting, not a substitute for investigating the whole system.
Isolate a module only when it is safe to do so
Identifying a failing SIMM or DIMM is not always straightforward. PassMark cautions that isolating the faulty module is not a clear-cut procedure. A test address or an error count is not a dependable shortcut to naming one stick, because the result can also depend on the slot, motherboard, CPU, or memory configuration.
If you are comfortable working inside the computer, and the system maker’s instructions permit it, test modules and slots systematically. Shut the computer down and follow the maker’s handling procedure; do not remove or rearrange parts while the computer is powered on. If you are unsure how to work safely or how to interpret the results, stop and ask the system maker or a qualified technician.
- Keep a record of which module and slot were involved in each test.
- Change only what the manufacturer’s procedure calls for, so the result remains interpretable.
- Look for a repeatable pattern across appropriate tests rather than treating one error location as proof.
- Consider whether errors follow a particular module or instead appear tied to a slot or configuration.
- Return to the same default memory settings for comparable runs.
If errors repeatedly follow one module under appropriate tests and default settings, that module becomes a stronger suspect. If they appear tied to a slot or remain inconsistent, a board or configuration issue remains possible. A result that changes whenever two variables are changed at once cannot reliably distinguish those possibilities.
When replacement or warranty support makes sense
Replacement becomes more reasonable when errors persist at default settings and methodical tests point to the same module. At that stage, contact the computer or memory maker about warranty support or replacement rather than relying on a single test result as proof.
Keep the test notes, settings, and any error reports when contacting support. They can help the maker decide whether to ask for additional slot tests, a firmware or configuration check, or a return authorization. A support representative may also know platform-specific limitations that a generic memory test cannot reveal.
Do not select a replacement kit without checking what the computer supports. Confirm the supported memory generation, capacity, module type, and configuration for the specific computer or motherboard. Compatibility depends on that system information; a generic recommendation cannot establish that a particular part will work in an unknown computer.

The sources do not establish a general RAM failure rate, an expected lifespan, or a compatible replacement part for an unspecified computer. Those details need model-specific information, not guesswork. Buying a larger or faster kit is not a diagnostic method and can introduce a new compatibility or stability variable.
A practical decision path
- Symptoms recur: record the pattern and any stop code; treat these as clues rather than a diagnosis.
- Run the built-in check: use Windows Memory Diagnostic and retrieve its result from the notification or the documented Event Viewer path.
- Errors appear: return memory settings to defaults and repeat testing before judging the modules.
- More evidence is needed: consider a bootable USB test, taking care to protect the drive’s existing data.
- Errors persist: isolate modules and slots only if you can safely follow the system maker’s instructions.
- A module is a repeatable suspect: ask the maker about warranty support and verify system compatibility before buying a replacement.
- Tests are clean but the problem continues: continue broader stop-code and hardware troubleshooting rather than assuming the RAM test settled the issue.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Treating a stop code as a part number: a code can involve a driver or invalid memory access without naming a failed DIMM.
- Testing only with an overclocked or aggressive profile: restore defaults first so instability is not confused with physical failure.
- Changing several things at once: moving modules, changing timings, and updating other hardware together makes the result difficult to interpret.
- Assuming a clean run is a guarantee: intermittent problems can escape a particular test run.
- Wiping a USB drive unintentionally: protect its existing files before making bootable media.
- Buying generic replacement RAM: verify generation, capacity, module type, and configuration for the exact system.
- Working inside an unsafe computer: use the manufacturer’s procedure or obtain qualified help instead of guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Does one blue screen mean my RAM is bad?
No. A blue screen is evidence of a serious error, but Microsoft notes that stop errors can have different causes. Record the stop code and run an appropriate memory check if the problem recurs.
What does IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL prove?
It does not prove a RAM failure. Microsoft describes the code as typically involving a driver or system memory accessing invalid memory. Use it to guide troubleshooting, not to identify a specific component.
MemTest86 detected errors in my memory. Is there something wrong with my RAM?
Possibly, but the result needs investigation. PassMark says reported errors can also involve the CPU, motherboard, or unreliable high-speed settings. Repeat the test at conservative defaults and isolate modules only through controlled, safe procedures.
How do I determine if my RAM is defective?
Start with Windows Memory Diagnostic, then consider a bootable MemTest86 check. If errors persist at default settings, test modules and slots methodically. A module that repeatedly produces errors across appropriate tests is a stronger suspect, but slot and platform problems must still be considered.
Where can I find the Windows Memory Diagnostic result?
After signing in, Windows may show a result notification. If you missed it, open Event Viewer and select Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > MemoryDiagnostics-Results > Debug.
Should I use MemTest86 instead of Windows Memory Diagnostic?
They serve different purposes. Windows Memory Diagnostic is built in and convenient for a first check. MemTest86 boots from USB and runs outside the normal Windows session, offering another perspective. Neither automatically identifies the failed component.

Can high-speed RAM settings cause test errors?
Yes. PassMark notes that memory can be reliable in one system or at a vendor’s test yet fail at high speed in a particular configuration. Returning to more conservative motherboard timings can show whether the problem is configuration stability rather than a permanently defective module.

Should I replace RAM when no test reports an error?
Not automatically. A clean result is reassuring but does not guarantee that an intermittent issue is absent. Continue broader stop-code and hardware troubleshooting before buying replacement memory.
What should I check before buying replacement RAM?
Confirm the exact computer or motherboard’s supported memory generation, capacity, module type, and configuration. Replacement is most reasonable after repeatable errors at default settings point to a particular module and the maker has been contacted about warranty or compatibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are crashes, freezes, and restarts enough to diagnose bad RAM?
No. They are reasons to investigate memory, but drivers, the CPU, motherboard, settings, and other hardware can cause the same symptoms. Use testing and a repeatable pattern rather than one incident.

What does a MemTest86 error mean?
It means the memory system needs investigation. It does not automatically prove a DIMM is physically defective; CPU, motherboard, slot, or high-speed configuration problems can also produce errors.
When is replacement RAM justified?

The Bottom Line
Bad RAM is one possible explanation for recurring crashes, freezes, restarts, and stop codes, not a conclusion supplied by any single symptom or test. Start with Windows Memory Diagnostic, use a bootable test when useful, return high-speed settings to conservative defaults, and isolate modules only through safe, methodical testing. Replace or warranty a module only when repeatable evidence and system compatibility support that decision.
