Neither identity flow should be confused with using ChatGPT through Apple platform features.
What each sign-in option does
With Sign in with ChatGPT, a supported external app lets you authenticate using your ChatGPT account. With Sign in with Apple, a participating app or website lets you authenticate using your Apple Account. These options identify you to the external service; they are not the same as signing into ChatGPT itself or authorizing an app to use additional account data.

Privacy: what information is shared?
Sign in with ChatGPT
OpenAI says the external app receives your name, email address, and profile picture, if present. Identity sign-in alone does not independently provide the app with your ChatGPT conversations or memory, files, tokens, billing information, or other ChatGPT account data. An app may ask separately for permission to access particular data or perform actions. Review that request on its own terms before approving it. OpenAI describes these distinctions in its Sign in with ChatGPT Help Center article.

The information exchanged with the app is not the whole picture of provider-side processing. OpenAI says it processes information needed for authentication, authorization, organization settings, and security. Depending on the flow, that can include account identifiers, the app and requested permissions, the authorization outcome, IP address, inferred location, browser or app and device details, and security signals. This processing should not be mistaken for information released to the third-party app.
Sign in with Apple
Apple’s sign-in flow can request your name and email address. Where available, Hide My Email lets you provide a unique random address that forwards messages to your personal address, so the app need not receive that personal email address. The app’s specific information requests are shown in its sign-in flow; Apple advises developers to minimize additional requests. Apple describes Sign in with Apple as a fast, private sign-in method with a consistent experience and fewer passwords to remember. That is Apple’s characterization of its own feature, not a head-to-head measurement against Sign in with ChatGPT.

Using ChatGPT at a partner app
- At a participating app or website, choose “Sign in with ChatGPT” or “Continue with ChatGPT.”
- Sign in to ChatGPT if prompted, then review the identity information the app will receive.
- If the app requests separate permissions, check the specific data or actions requested and approve only if you want to grant them.
- Continue to create, link, or access the app’s account.
The partner’s implementation and your organization’s admin settings affect whether the option appears. OpenAI says the feature is rolling out across supported partners; its availability information should be checked for current participating apps.

Using Sign in with Apple
Choose Sign in with Apple at a participating app or website and follow the authorization prompt. On supported Apple devices with a passcode enabled, authentication can use Face ID or Touch ID, with passcode or Apple Account password available as applicable. On non-Apple devices, use your Apple Account credentials and a two-factor authentication code. The exact prompt depends on device and context; Apple’s Sign in with Apple documentation describes the flow.
Availability and additional access
Sign in with ChatGPT is not a universal login button: the app must support it, and an organization’s settings may control its availability. Also, signing in and using a ChatGPT plan through an app are distinct. OpenAI’s developer documentation treats eligible plan usage as an optional, separate permission, rather than an automatic consequence of identity sign-in. Sign in with Apple is likewise limited to participating apps and websites, though Apple documents its use across Apple and non-Apple platforms. Neither sign-in choice by itself means the external app gets access to the other provider’s services: Apple sign-in does not grant ChatGPT account access, and ChatGPT sign-in is not the same as authorizing ChatGPT plan use or other delegated permissions.
Returning to the same account later
Use the same provider you used when you first created or linked the app account. OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance specifically advises people who originally signed up with Apple to continue using Apple sign-in. If you used Hide My Email, the app account may be associated with an address ending in @privaterelay.appleid.com; it may not match your everyday email. See OpenAI’s login troubleshooting guidance.

If an app offers both buttons, choosing a different provider can lead to a different account or an account-linking prompt. Don’t assume that matching email addresses automatically merges accounts. Keep access to the original provider account and follow the app’s own account recovery or linking process if you need to change methods.

How to choose
- Use ChatGPT sign-in when the app offers it and you want your ChatGPT identity to be the login. Check any separate permission or plan-use request rather than treating it as part of sign-in.
- Use Apple sign-in when you prefer Apple Account authentication or want to use Hide My Email where offered.
- For an existing account, prioritize continuity. Choose the provider you used at signup unless the app provides a clear account-linking or recovery path.
There is no directly comparable official statistic establishing which option is faster, more popular, or produces better privacy outcomes. The practical differences documented by the providers are the identity used, the information each flow can disclose, platform and partner availability, and whether additional permissions are requested.
